o say it is no easy feat being
crowned the very best winter beer
in 8ritain wouId be a bit of an
understatement. At the turn of the 21st
century traditionaI winter beer styIes
such as OId AIes and darker MiIds were
under threat, with many historic recipes
being overIooked in the face of
dwindIing consumer demand.
Past forward a decade and the Unlted
Klngdom can now boast about over ll50
brewerles regularly produclng way ln
renalssance has occurred ln recent years

take one look around Natlonal wlnter Ales

wlth lts vast local branch structure, CAMPA
relles on lts members to vote for thelr
favourltes uslng branch and tastlng panel
nomlnatlons for the beers produced ln
thelr area. Peglonal or area competltlons
are arranged for the beers to be expertly
[udged and assessed ln style classes - then
only the very best progress through to the
Plnals. The Plnals for wlnter beers are held
annually at CAMPA's Natlonal wlnter Ales
Pestlval wlth a speclal lnvlted [udglng
panel usually conslstlng of brewers,
publlcans, drlnks wrlters and CAMPA
members decldlng upon the overall
wlnners or Champlons.
Last year at the Natlonal wlnter Ales
Pestlval ln Manchester lt was a small
brewery from west orkshlre, Llland, who
were crowned Supreme wlnter Champlon
for thelr "l872 Porter", [ust plplng the beer

not forgettlng our regular,
Gwatklns (arllngton Mlll) from
Abbey Dore. The welsh
contlngent wlll be present, wlth
a selectln from Gwynt y Ddralg
(welsh warrlor clder and Two

(wobbly Munk).
Devon wlll be represented wlth,
amongst others, wlnklelgh
Autum Scrumpy and from Clyst
St. George Green valley Pum
Tlddly Tum. |f you llke pale,
clear clder we have Double
vlslon from Kent, and from the
same stable thelr perry,
|mpeared vlslon. A newcomer
to the festlval ls Hubz from
Cambrldgeshlre, champlon
clder at Peterborough Pestlval
20l3. 8ack after a debut at the
Derby Summer Pestlval wlll be
8ottle Klcklng from Hallaton,
Lelcestershlre. |ts early days yet,
but space permlttlng we wlll
have the largest range ever or
clder / perry at a Derby wlnter
Pestlval.
Thls has been a very good year
for clder makers. Plenty of
sunshlne, and plenty of raln too
has produced one of the best
crops of apples and pears ln
years, so next summer should
be excellent for clder and perry.
Of course, clder has to be made
ln the autumn when the frult ls
avallable and lt then ferments
throughout the wlnter. |t ls
posslble that some of the 20l3
vlntage wlll be ready for the
Natlonal wlnter Ales Pestlval, so
there could be late changes to
the program to accommodate
early season presslngs.

onsiderl Dear 7oper, tbe festive season tbat is so nearIy
upon us once again, a time wben your favourite bosteIries
wiII no doubt be invaded by tbose once a year boozers, wbo
know notbing of pub etiquette and wbo make tbeir own time
at tbe bar Ionger tban necessary (and as a consequence,
everyone eIse's) by insisting on paying by credit card - or
es, Dear Toper, lt ls that annual commerclal bonanza known as
Chrlstmas! A tlme of year when gulllble parents, egged on by a T.v.
advertlslng onslaught that beglns as a trlckle ln October and by
lavlshlng thelr savlngs (or more llkely thelr payday loans) on buylng
thelr spollt brats the latest 'must-have' ltems. And the older and craftler
the brats get, the more expenslve they become, sullen teenagers wlll
no doubt be threatenlng to take thelr hapless parents to the Luropean
Court of Human Plghts,
clalmlng 'mental cruelty', lf they
don't get thelr heart's deslre,
and more often than not these
days, that ls a muslcal
lnstrument. when | was a
teenager, muslcal lnstruments
were expenslve, often belng
handed down from one
generatlon to another, and as a
consequence, the people that
owned them treated them wlth
a certaln reverence, and what ls
more, they tended to know
how to play them. Not so
nowadays - llke so many other
thlngs these days muslcal
lnstruments are relatlvely
cheap, often belng made ln
thlrd world sweat shops, and so
they prollferate at an alarmlng
rate.
|'ve no ob[ectlon to people spendlng thelr own money, however they
may wlsh to do so, and lf that means glvlng thelr pubescent brats the
means to make a horrendous dln, so be lt. |ndeed, | thlnk there ls a
klnd of lronlc [ustlce at work when they demonstrate thelr lack of
muslcal ablllty and taste ln front of thelr dotlng parents. The trouble ls,
lt doesn't last, sooner or later the parents' ob[ect to the caterwaullng
(usually when a dlstraught nelghbour forces the lssue by heavlng a
brlck through the front wlndow). And so the asplrlng mlnstrels are
forced to look for an alternatlve venue. Despondent, they trudge the
streets, and then they see lt, a blackboard outslde the local hostelry,
advertlslng "Open Mlc Nlghts".
These strange events usually take place on qulet weekday evenlngs,
when landlords are looklng to entlce punters lnto thelr establlshments
wlth some form of entertalnment. Unfortunately these evenlngs are
not very entertalnlng, and the would-be pop stars of tomorrow seem
to thlnk that declbels are a substltute for talent, whlch usually means
that you can hear the dlscordant racket at the other end of the street.
The latter ls not surprlslng, because the score or so of speakers, that
each "artlste" brlngs along wlth them, are plled hlgh on elther slde of
the performer, to create a couple of vlbratlng, totterlng towers, that
loom omlnously over the proceedlngs, threatenlng to topple over at
any moment and crush any unsuspectlng member of the publlc who
has been forced to venture too
close to the throbblng
the tollets. And watch out for
trlpwlres too, for connectlng
cables and swltches to rewlre
an entlre houslng estate.
And so there the performer
proudly slts, amldst hls llttle
emplre of cables, trlpods,
mlcrophones and speakers, that
have taken up two thlrds of the
room, and announces presently
those dreaded words, "Thls ls
one | wrote myself". |t turns out
to be a protest song, and the
slnger, who's never had a [ob,
playlng a gultar made ln a Thlrd
world sweatshop, and uslng
enough electrlclty to power a
small hospltal, drones on about the exploltatlon of labour, the need to
cut energy consumptlon ln order to halt cllmate change and how hls
parents don't understand hlm.
Don't mlsunderstand me, Dear Toper: |'m all for llve entertalnment ln
pubs, but lt has to be entertalnment and not self lndulgence.
Purthermore, as a muslclan frlend of mlne recently polnted out, open
mlc nlghts are taklng work away from professlonal muslclans.
As for our would-be pop star, he's [ust started playlng somethlng that
sounds vaguely llke "1lngle 8ells". well, | suppose lt ls that tlme of year.
As for you, Dear Toper, |'d llke to take thls opportunlty to wlsh you a
very Merry Chrlstmas and a prosperous New ear.
Conslder that, Dear Toper! D.7.
