Cameron Ball Ms. Coen 7th English Accelerated 6 December 2013 The Industrial Revolution: How the World Became Industrialized Forever The Industrial Revolution is heavily responsible for most inventions people use today, from the light bulb to the subway. It made inventions that might even help people today. The Industrial Revolution was a turning point in history because it urbanized the world, created ease for people, and influenced future inventions. The Industrial Revolution caused many events in the future, but what caused the Industrial Revolution to happen? Allen says One popular theory is that the Glorious Revolution of 1688 led to a secure property-rights system, which encouraged investment, which in turn spurred innovation(para.2). The property rights system made more people invest and which ultimately created the idea to innovate. Another possibility is that the scientific revolution gave people the ideas and tools to increase production (Allen, para. 2). With these two ideas combined, the motive of innovation, and with the tools to do it, led to a period that would produce many inventions for the future. The revolution ran from the middle of the 18th century to the middle of the 19th century. During this time period, many great inventions were made, such as steam power. According to Maxted an understanding of steam had existed for some 2000 years, it was the English patent system with its inherent incentive of potential wealth that drove inventors to invest the requisite

time to make and perfect technological breakthroughs(para.1). So, after it was discovered to be useful, the British needed to patent it, and then everyone invested in the new power. Some inventions such as the steam engine led to the growth of cities through urbanization. Urbanization wan one of the biggest effects of the Industrial Revolution. Various machines had a great impact on the making of cities. The South Carolina Standards Reinforcement Guide states that The invention of the steam engine allowed factories to be built almost anywhere because the steam engine did not rely on water power ("South Carolina, 123). Factories used to be powered by water so they would need to be built near running water. When the steam engine was made it allowed factories to be built anywhere due to it being powered by steam. With the growth of cities increasing industrialism took place all over. Industrialism is when people go away form depending of manual or animal work, and let machines do most of the work ("South Carolina 113). With factories making many inventions for people, their life became a lot easier. Inventions made peoples lives easier during the Industrial Revolution. One of these is the spinning jenny. A spinning jenny is a machine that allows one person to spin multiple spools of thread at once (Allen para.4). The way people used to make cloth from thread was the domestic system. This was where people cleaned, combed, spun, and wove the wool into cloth. With the new inventions the revolution had to offer, the textile business became easier. Other inventions improved the world generally. The invention of steel through the steel age allowed a strong, flexible material to be used to build new and stronger structures ("South Carolina 123). Locomotives were being invented and used during this time as well, but iron was

being used as the railing system, so the invention of steel came along and allowed better rails to be build with stronger locomotives to fit the rails better ("South Carolina 124). Electricity was also discovered around this time with its capability to be easily transferred to heat, light, and motion. According to the South Carolina Standards Reinforcement Guide In the 1830s, Samuel Morse used electricity to invent the telegraphthe telegraph carried messages at high speeds over long distances (125). Electricitys power was used to make a very important invention. The telegraph was turned into the telephone through further inventing, and many other inventions inspired future inventions too. A great number of inventions were influenced by the Industrial Revolutions inventions, and some are even used today. The telegraph was made into the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell twenty years after ("South Carolina 125). So, the telegraph was a very used invention but it got better and was turned into the telephone, an invention people still use today. Many inventions inspired future inventions during the Industrial Revolution. The famous inventionsthe spinning jenny, the steam engine, coke smelting, and so forthdeserve their renown, for they mark the start of a process that has carried the west, at least, to the mass prosperity of the twentyfirst century(ALLENpara.2). Various inventions made by people during the Industrial Revolution made their way into the twenty first century. The semiconductor chip allowed many future electronics to become better (Simnacher para.3). Along with making electronics better, the semiconductor chip also made it easier to use as well. The invention of steel allowed many old things to be rebuilt with steel ("South Carolina 123). Since steel made things stronger, buildings and machines became stronger and more complex.
