The All New USB ASHTRAY. If you have read a blog or seen a computer store lately you'll come to believe that the world gets plugged in a USB port in the end. But, no one really made some sort of gadget for the smokers...yep everybody hates the smokers, well the time for CHANGE IS NOW , Introducing the USB Ashtray that absorbs smoke ! What you need : One Desk Lamp With Table Clamp = $5.00 One PC Cooler With LED's = $4.50 One Regular USB Cable = $3.50 One Metallic Ashtray = $2.50 Anti Vibration Rubber = $1.00 Plastic and Metal Glue = $1.00 Total Cost Of Project $17.5 Dollars ! *We have a cool video about the hole project made out but we couldn't embed it so here's the link in high definition VIEW VIDEO *

Image Notes 1. The regular ashtray design is unchanged since it's birth in the late 1950s . Nothing really changed since then for these unfortunate table trash cans...

step 1: Step 1: The Lamp

The Lamp, I found the best body at hand for this project is a desk lamp, and here's why : It's flexible, nice to look at, and the right size & shape . You need to make sure you don't overpay for one, they cost from anywhere from $1 - $5 , depends on style, color. Make sure your lamp has a clamp on like shown in the picture. So Here's what you want your lamp to have : - On / Off switch , mine had a voltage regulator - EVEN BETTER. - Same color as the rest of the parts you use. - Medium height. - Flexible Neck. - Bottom Clamp. Now let's take it apart . First remove any light bulbs you may have in the lamp in case you didn't get a new one. Then start to unscrew the socket from the lamp, there should only be one screw holding it in the center of the socket. (pic 2) Then unscrew the hole head part of the lamp neck like shown in ( pic 3 ). You should find the 2 screws at the ending of the neck part where the head and lamp neck join. That's it for step 1. *We have a cool video about the hole project made out but we couldn't embed it so here's the link in high definition VIEW VIDEO *

step 2: Step 2: The Cooler

Let's get to work... Now you need a standard size PC case cooler with 4 red or blue LED's ( pic 1 ). And make sure that the cooler fits in the head part of the lamp. You have to test out how fast it spins under only 5v of power because they are designed to work with 12v. The power should be around 50% witch is just right because more power would make the cooler make that "cooler noise". Now grab a regular usb cable and solder it's the red and green wires to the cooler's wires. ( pic 2 ). Make sure you have the + and - terminals set right so it wont spin backwards, usually the LED's don't work unless the wiring is right . Then you can cover the solder connection with some electrical tape to make everything smooth again. *We have a cool video about the hole project made out but we couldn't embed it so here's the link in high definition VIEW VIDEO *

step 3: Step 3: Absorbing Mechanism

If you read so far you probably knew this was gonna happen eventually... Take some good glue that can stick plastic to metal , i found some, really cheap but can't tell you the name because i live in Europe and you might not find it where you live. Anyway, apply glue around the edges of the cooler's back end where the air get's blown out ( pic 1 ) . If possible using a good knife cut in as much as you can from the edges making it more "round" to give the glue more surface to stick to and let the cooler go in deeper in the lamp head. Run the usb cable thru the head piece where the old socket wiring was. Now place it in the head piece of the lamp and hold it there until the glue starts to stick. ( pic 2 ) Make sure that the air get's blown inside the lamp. *We have a cool video about the hole project made out but we couldn't embed it so here's the link in high definition VIEW VIDEO *

step 4: Step : 4 New Wires

Now... Screw the head with the new cooler back on the body. ( pic 3 ) Now back to the lamp body, where the switch and the old wires are. ( pic 1 ) Remove the clamp to get to the screw that holds the bottom mask. Unscrew the bottom part of to expose the circuit board and the old wires ( pic 1 ) Unsolder the old wires and remove them, and replace them with the new ones. ( pic 2 ) Then put the bottom part back on and run the usb cable out the back ( pic 3 ) *NOTE* 1. When soldering the new cable remember to use only the green and black usb wires. 2. Make sure you have enough cable left to reach your computer's USB and then some. 3. Put the clamp's spring back making sure the clamp still works right . *We have a cool video about the hole project made out but we couldn't embed it so here's the link in high definition VIEW VIDEO *

step 5: Step : 5 The Ashtray

Close to the end... Now you need a cool looking metallic or plastic ashtray with the same color as the lamp. ( pic 1 ) Now this is simple, you need 2 Anti vibration rubbers ( pic 2 ) to level the angle at witch the ashtray will stay when it's clamped in the lamp see ( pic 3 ) Then clamp on the ashtray to the lamp and it should look like in ( pic 4 ). Make sure the ashtray is secured on and looks good. *Note* 1. Make sure that the rubber's are the right size you can find them in all shapes and sizes at your local convenient store. 2. Don't glue the ashtray on so you can empty it whenever you want or need to. *We have a cool video about the hole project made out but we couldn't embed it so here's the link in high definition VIEW VIDEO *

step 6: Step 6: Smoke Odorizer

You need, A really good smelling car smoke odorizer that neutralizes smoke smell. ( pic 1 ) Look in the back of the lamps head, you should find a few holes that are normally used to evacuate heat from the light bulb. Use the little holes to apply the little jaw holder to later mount the odorizer on, it should be no different than mounting it on a car. Your final result should look like ( pic 2 ) AND.....!! *We have a cool video about the hole project made out but we couldn't embed it so here's the link in high definition VIEW VIDEO *

step 7: Step : 7 TEASER !

This step is only here so we delay the time before you see the final product ! All you have to do now is plug it in your USB port & see the next step for pic's . *We have a cool video about the hole project made out but we couldn't embed it so here's the link in high definition VIEW VIDEO * *We have a cool video about the hole project made out but we couldn't embed it so here's the link in high definition VIEW VIDEO *

step 8: THE USB SMOKE ABSORBING ASHTRAY

You did it !!! Now only a guy with a passion for tech, smoking, ashtrays, or usb cables would actually make it. It's a really cool thing to have around the computer. It looks like it just sucks it into the lamp face, then blows it out the back, with a pleasant smell. Why not have a simple screen or loose-knit cloth around the exit holes, to actually trap smoke particles? Also, you don't have to have a clamp desk-lamp and a metallic ashtray to make this. It can be a lamp with a round base too, then just put any ashtray you want to onto the base.
