Lesson Plan Using The Assure Model

Forty-forty (45) minutes

The class is made up of thirty-five (35) students; twenty girls and fifteen boys between the age of 7 and 8 years old who arefourth graders who attend St. Martins Primary School in Kingston. Socioeconomically they are from the lower to middle income class with a larger percentage of their parents only having a secondary education. The class is arranged in a cooperative group setting to facilitate group work among the students. None of the students have a serious mental or physical impairment. The groups are heterogeneous with students displaying various learning styles such as verbal, visual and tactile. They also illustrated multiple intelligences such as spatial, naturalistic and interpersonal intelligences. None of the children have any serious mental or physical impairment.

State Objectives:

At the end of the lesson the students (audience) will be able to: 1) 2) 3) 4) Define the term pollution; State at least three (3) effects land, air or water pollution has on human and the environment; Draw a poster to show ways in which persons can make the environment healthy, and Begin to develop the habit of behaving in ways that will minimize or prevent environmental damage in their homes, schools and communities.

Select Methods, Media and Material: METHODS: 1) The lesson will start with a two minutes discussion, led by the teacher, as she draws background information from the students on their knowledge about pollution. The teacher will record the students responses on the chalkboard.

2) The students will view a powerpoint presentation on land, air and water pollution; 3) The Question and Answer strategy will be used to help clear any misconceptions that the students might have;

MEDIA: 1) Blackboard will be used to record the students responses during the opening discussion. 2) The computer and the overhead projector will be used to show the class the powerpoint presentation. 3) Whiteboard for display purposes for classroom activities. MATERIALS:

- overhead projector -whiteboard - plain papers - classroom computer and S-video cable -powerpoint presentation on land, water and air pollution including pictures/images, - (web site links)

Utilizing Media and Material - Requiring student participation Prior to the lesson the overhead projector and computer were checked and slides were previewed to ensure that they were appropriate and all materials were in good order.The students will be placed into groups of four.

(10 minutes) Step 1: Teacher will begin the lesson by playing the Earth Song by Michael Jackson to begin the lesson. After listening to the song the teacher will say to the students:

What do you this song is all about? Expected response: Saving the earth. Teacher will say to the students: Do you think that we are destroying the earth? Expected Response: Yes, because we are polluting the earth. A discussion will begin to bring out the students background knowledge about pollution. The students will name the types of pollution that they are aware of (expected response: land, air and water) and their responses will be recorded on the whiteboard. During the discussion the students will also mention areas or places that they encounter pollution eg. in their communities, on the roads. (10 minutes) The powerpoint presentation on land, air and water pollution will be viewed by the students and the teacher will allow the students to ask relevant questions relating to the topic and which she help to facilitate the students responses and guide them on how they can read further information about their questions through the links and websites which attached to the presentation. (5 Minutes) An activity about the effects of pollution will be done by the entire class which will be displayed on the whiteboard. Step 3: (15 minutes) In their groups of four (4) the students will be asked to prepare a poster to show ways in which people can make the environment healthy. (10 minutes) Evaluation: Each group will present their posters to the class (consisting of 8 groups with four persons and 1 group with three persons) will each group will be given one(1) minute each to talk about their poster. The students ideas will be recorded on the whiteboard. (5 minutes) The teacher and the students will continue the discussion about pollution, its effects and ways of preventing pollution.
