WHAT IS DIABETES?
As dened by the American Diabetes Association, diabetes is a group of diseases characterized by high blood glucose levels that result from defects in the bodys ability to produce and/or use insulin. Type 1 Diabetes Usually diagnosed in children or young adults. Insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life, is not produced. Type 2 Diabetes The most common form of diabetes, with millions of Americans unaware that they are at risk. Either the body does not produce enough insulin or cells ignore the insulin. Gestational Diabetes Develops in women during pregnancy. A diagnosis does not mean that you had diabetes before pregnancy or that you will after giving birth.
