NICK MARTIN ON THE ISSUES: CIVIL RIGHI'S
Many Americans have serious doubts about the honesty of
elected officials and of those, who are, by appointment, invol-
ved in the running of government. On a local level there are
a number of important things that we must do to guarantee
now and in the future that citizens have full access to infor-
mation and rights guaranteed to them under the constitution.
I support the following measures designed to guarantee
those rightsi
'
(1) A local "freedom of information" act that would erisure
citizen accessto,,information on government operations, budgets,
taxes, and policy proposals. Also it would provide the same ac-
cess to information on agencies such as housing inspection, and
police and fire departments.
(2) I stand solidly behind the right of ordinary people
to keep and bear arms. At the same time I would deal directly
with the root causes of crimes which necessitate the need to
possess weapons. Citizens have the right to feel free from dan-
ger to their emotional and physical safety.
(3) A citizen review board, composed of people from all
sectors of the community, to propose regulations governing the
actions,of the police qapartment and to oversee those actions.
Laws that would strenghten due process under law and
the right of citizens to feel secure and free from government
interference in their personal affairs. Specifically, laws that
would prohibit electronic surveillance and other act1111rities of
questionable constitutionality.
(S) Regulations that would pro:tect the civil . ot;'.ll"tfi'ty
person to have clean air and and to be protected frQJll. .

I support t.he"' inalienable-. right of every I:iex1rigton1an, under
the U.S. constitution, to equal t:reatment under law, quality
health care, and a fair share of the benefits of society regard-
le/s of race, sex, religion or economic status
