The principal stress at a point in a bar are 160 N/mm2 (tensile) and 80 N/mm2 (Compressive). (4) (b) Find the diameter of the shaft required to transmit 60 kW at 150 rpm, if the maximum torque is likely to exceed the mean torque by 20% for a maximum permissible shear stress of 60 N/mm 2. Find also the angle of Twist for a length of 2.5m. Take C = 8X10-4N/mm2. (or) A close coiled helical spring has a stiffness of 10 N/mm. Its length when fully compressed with adjacent coils touching each other is 400 mm. The modulus of rigidity of the spring material is 8X104 N/mm2.
