3.3 Earthing arrangement in broadcast station

3.3.1 Definition:
An Electrical connectio n to the general mass o f earth to provide safe pa ssage to fault current to enable to operate p rotective devices and provide safety to personnel. Or The term Earthing means connecting the neutral point of a sup ply sy ste m or Non -current carrying parts of electrical apparatus to the general mass o f earth in such a manner that at all times an immediate discha rge o f electrical energy takes place wi thout dange r.

3.3.2 Objective of Earthing:

To ensu re that no pa rt of equipments, other than live part s, assu me dangerous potential. To allow su ffi cient cu rrent to fl o w sa fely for proper operation of protective devices. To suppre ss dangerou s potential gradients on the ea rth su rface thi s ma y cau se incorrect operation of contro l & protective devices and also may cause shock or injury to personnel. Provide stability of voltage, prevent excessive voltage peak s durin g disturbances and protect again st lightning surges.

3.3.3 Types of Earthing:Neutral Earthing:

It deals with the ea rthing of system neutral to ensure system secu rity and protection .

It deal s with ea rthing of non-c urrent ca rrying parts of equipment to ensure sa fety to personnel and protection against lightning.

3.3.4 Danger posed to human being by electric current:

The currents, and the dangers posed to the human being, are dependent o n the volta ge as we ll as o n the electrical resi stance of the human body (the inner body re si stance plus the skin resi stances). The critical electrical voltage s with which we are involved in our professi onal and private lives are normally 220 volts, and up to 440 volts in the case of th ree-phase current. The intensit y of the inne r body resi stance is critically dependent on the path of the current in the body. An Average values fo r the inner body resi stance along various paths taken by t he current a rea s follows: Hand hand 1200 ohms Hand feet 900 ohms Hands feet 600 ohms
