Who ISO Is
Network of national standards institutes of 162 countries Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland

A non-governmental organization
Members both from public and private sector Worlds largest developer of standards

What ISOs Name Means


International Organization for Standardization would have different abbreviations in different languages IOS in English, OIN in French Decided to use a word derived from Greek isos meaning equal Short form of organization is ISO in all countries & all languages

How It Started
International standardization began in the electrotechnical field International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) established 1906 Intl Federation of the National Standardizing Association (ISA) was set up 1926 & came to end 1942

In 1946, delegates from 25 countries met in London with an idea of a new international organization Objective to facilitate the international coordination and unification of industrial standards
ISO began operations on 23 Feb 1947

How Standards Are Developed


National delegates of experts of a technical committee prepare Draft International Standard (DIS) After feedback & positive voting Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) is developed & circulated

On final voting, document is published as International Standard

ISO 9001 / ISO 14001 registration is done by certification bodies like United Registrar of Systems Limited. Further affiliated to an accreditation board, a public sector organization, like: - United Kingdom Accreditation Services (UKAS) - Pakistan National Accreditation Council (PNAC)
