LTC 4240: Art for Children Unit Title & Big Idea: Having Fun With Time Unit Overview/Summary: For Visual Arts children will explore the work of Salvador Dali and explore his surreal images of clocks. The students will then read the book to introduce telling time and then engage in a math lesson about the hour and half hour of time. Key Concepts (3-4) Essential Questions (3-4) Grade Level: Class Periods Required: 3

Time -It is important for students to know the importance of time because it is something found in their everyday life. -Students can begin to express their knowledge of time by planning and following their own schedule.

Art: What makes an image surreal? Literacy: What is the purpose and importance of telling time? Math: What is the nearest hour? What is the nearest half hour?

Unit Objectives: (Excellent resource at http://www.teachervision.fen.com/curriculum-planning/new-teacher/48345.html?for_printing=1&detoured=1) -The students will be able to identify what makes an image surreal. -The students will draw and construct their own clocks that resemble Salvador Dalis artwork The Persistence of Memory. -The students will understand the importance of time. -The students will be able to tell time to the nearest hour and half hour.

Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) (3-4) (http://dese.mo.gov/divimprove/curriculum/GLE/) -MA 2 1.10 tell time to the nearest hour and half hour. -CA 4 1.8, 2.1 Recognize different forms of written communication (e.g., thank-you notes, friendly letters, lists, poems, invitations)

Core Academic Standards (Common Core State Standards) (3-4)

CCSS.Math.Content.1.MD.B.3 Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.1.1 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.7 Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., explore a number of how-to books on a given topic and use them to write a sequence of instructions).

Content Areas Integrated: 1. Visual Art 2.Math

Identify & define common vocabulary/concepts that connect the art form with the other identified subject area(s): Surrealism: A period in art history when artists create dreamlike paintings

The past, present and future. Hour: One of the 24 equal parts of the day Half hour: A period of 30 minutes Brief Lesson Descriptions (2-3 sentences each) 1. Students will watch a short clip about Salvador Dali and how his artwork represents surrealism. The students will then create their own surreal clocks based on Dalis piece The Persistence of Memory. 2. The students will listen to the story The Grouchy Ladybug and recognize the importance of time through The Grouchy Ladybugs experiences. Then the students will try and construct their own schedule from when they wake up to when they go to sleep. 3. Students will be provided with individual clocks that have moving hands. The teacher will have their own large clock to demonstrate the hour and half hour. Then the students will pair up and play a matching game with cards that represent the hour and half hour on an analog clock. They will match those cards with the matching digital clock representation.

Lesson Titles in Sequence/Order 1.Surrealism with Salvador Dali 2.Learning the importance of time with The Grouchy Ladybug 3.Telling time with the hour and half hour

What student prior knowledge will this unit require/draw upon? For the math lesson students should be able to count up to 60 because that is how many minutes are in an hour. Although this unit only requires them to learn the hour and half hour they still will be working towards discovering even more about time for future lessons. In their literacy lesson they should be familiar with writing different forms of communication so that they can create their schedule. What activities will you use to engage students in imagining, exploring, and/or experimenting in this unit? The students will get to make their own clocks to hang up around their classroom or decorate the hallway in their Art lesson. For the literacy lesson the students will listen to The Grouchy Ladybug and then get to create their own schedule to better understand how time works in their everyday lives. How will this unit permit/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways? In the art lesson the students will have the opportunity to create their clocks however they wish to really get a surreal feel just as Salvador Dali does in his work. In literacy the students will have the opportunity to make their own schedules that they generally follow each day. In most cases the students will all have different activities and get to share how all of their schedules are different. In the math lesson the students get to work with the matching cards that display both analog and digital pictures so that students can work with more than one way to match the times. How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning/learning processes?

Art Integration Unit Plan Template 3 The students will learn their own class schedule well enough that they will be able to transition between their lessons without have to ask the teacher. Understanding the hour and half hour students will be able to begin to pace themselves to be sure they are working at an appropriate rate. How will this unit engage students in assessing their own work and the work of peers? The students will be able to share their schedules with their peers and reflect on the similarities and differences of them. Also when they play the clock matching game the students will be able to asses and help one another out with the matching. What opportunities/activities will students be given to revise and improve their understandings and their work? The math matching clock game will allow the students to do a little of trail and error. By doing this they can revise and try and find the correct match over and over. In the literacy lesson after the students make their schedule they will need to revise and make sure all events are happening in a logical order. What opportunities/activities will you provide for students to share their learning/understanding/work in this unit? The students will be able to share their learning through the matching game with their partner. They will also be able to share their schedules they prepare to learn about how all the students have different schedules away from school. The students will also be able to share their surreal clocks and display them in the classroom or hallway.

How will you adapt the various aspects of this lesson to differently-abled students? -For students that are learning at a faster pace the matching game can have additional cards that begin matching with the nearest five minutes. -For students who may be learning at a slower pace they will be able to use their individual clocks that we used as a class at the beginning of the lesson to have a manipulative in front of them.
