SECTION A
This section contains six questions. Answer ALL SIX questions. All questions carry equal marks. The maximum marks for each question, or part of a question, are shown in brackets. You are advised to spend about 15 minutes on each question. Start each answer on a new page.

Outline the arrangements in a motor fleet policy that will minimise the risk to a multi-site organisation where workers drive vehicles between sites.

Give the meaning of the term confined space. Outline factors that should be considered in relation to emergency rescue arrangements for confined space work.

The 1963 International Labour Organisations Convention 119 (C119) concerns the Guarding of Machinery. Part 1 considers general provisions; Part 2 concerns the sale, hire, transfer and exhibition of machinery and Part 3 the use of machinery. (a) (b) Outline categories of machinery covered by Part 1 of the convention. Give examples of transmission machinery (exposed moving parts) specified in Part 2. Outline requirements for the use of machinery as specified in Part 3. (3)

Describe the effects of a fire in a workplace on the following structural materials: (i) (ii) (iii) steel; concrete; wood. (4) (4) (4)

An external lift on a construction site has an interlocked guard to prevent the lift operating when the gate is open. With reference to the diagram: (a) (b) (c) identify the two types of switch shown (Switch A AND Switch B); identify the functional components associated with BOTH switches; outline the normal sequence of operation for the electrically-operated, cam-activated switch assembly when the gate opens and closes; outline ways in which electrically-operated, cam-activated switches may fail to operate as intended.
