Futurist Report in My Field 3

Introduction For this Futurist Assignment, I have decided to look at the fields of Instructional Design, Technology and Distance Education. Using current research by renowned Men and Woman in the field I have found ten possible changes in the three aforementioned fields as they stand today and compiled a presentation of the top 10 Trends for the year 2015.

Futurist Report in My Field 4

Statement and References of Trends Top 10 Trends for the year 2015

Trend 1 Cloud Storage Services will replace the flash drive Cloud storage is all the rage these days. Ever since Dropbox made cloud storage simple and available to the masses back in 2007, a whole slew of companies including big name techs have been busy fighting to be #1 in this mufti-billion dollar industry. Many ex-flash drive aficionados, compelled by the benefits of the cloud, have already made the switch, they find great comfort in the way that cloud file storage enables them to easily access their files from anywherewithout the need to carry anything, not even a flash drive! (Ryan Stutzman, 2012)

Trend 2 Increase use of Technology in Classroom. Schools will realize that in order to capture the attention of todays tech-savvy students and properly prepare them for a successful future, they must incorporate classroom technology into their teaching. The line between distance education and local education will become blurred due to the increase use of technology in the classroom. (The Current State of Technology in the Classroom, n.d.)

Trend 3 Increase in the Quality and Quantity of MOOCs A Huffington Post survey of international institutions indicates greater MOOC activity in the future, with 43 percent of respondents planning to offer MOOCs by 2016. The most frequently cited reason for not offering a MOOC was that it had an unclear/unproven business model. The newest member of the MOOC family Future Learn is currently working to rectify that very issue, which I am sure will be rectified as time progress. (Judith A. Pirani, 2013)

Trend 4 Elimination of books as we know them According to Rice University professor Richard Baraniuk (2006), the vision behind Connexions, is that it cuts out the textbook, allowing teachers to share and modify course materials freely, anywhere in the world. All story telling will be done via the computer/tablet, or whatever new technological marvel that comes along. The few books that will remain will all be smart books (Joe Sabia, 2011).

Trend 5 Increase in SMART learning; from Black Boards to SMART Boards Dr. Robert Goodman, Director of the New Jersey Center for Teaching and Learning stated that; Collaborating together and solving complex problems are the skills needed for the future, so how we teach is just as important as what we teach. Creating classrooms that encourage collaborative learning requires the right tools I see the use of the smart board increasing to facilitate this type of learner collaboration. (SMART Education Solutions, 2013).

Trend 6 Change in the contents of the Instructional Designers/ Teachers' toolbox AJ Kelton (2011) in the conclusion of a presentation stated that ID&T Professionals, have an expanding toolbox. A larger toolbox, the greater the likelihood of selecting proper tools, which will positively affect learning and performance.

Trend 7 Technology Takes Over In Ms. Dawesars opening presentation, she spoke about her experience during Hurricane Sandy and her need along with many others to stay digitally connected. Its like technology has become one of basic needs, and to some the most important. A question that is frequently asked is; What did we do before we had whatever our latest gadget is? (Abha Dawesar, 2013)

Trend 8 Schools in the Cloud This was proposed by Sugata Mitra and will facilitate the creation of Self Organized Learning Environments (Sugata Mitra, 2013).

Trend 9 Increase in designers designing for Education Pilloton stated that one of the things she along with her group have done is to physically construct and improve spaces and materials and experiences for teachers and students in response to the outdated textbooks and physical environment that presently exists. I think that this kind of initiative will increase as we get to 2015. In my home country St. Lucia we have already started making this a reality by designing for education through the construction of labs at many schools and improving or constructing new wings and playgrounds to get them equipped for 21st century learning (Emily Pilloton, 2010).

Trend 10 Schools will Nurture Creativity Schools will develop education for the individual student. The move will be made from the industrial model, to the agricultural model. Schools will begin to place the same amount of importance on creativity as they do with literacy (Sir Ken Robinson, 2006 & 2010).

Reflection This assignment was the most challenging of the individual assignments for this course. It involved a lot of reading to acquire information about the three fields to help me select my ten trends. I then had the task of choosing graphics to represent my trends which in-itself was no small feat, because I am very indecisive. This assignment also made me take a closer look at PowerPoint. Using PowerPoint this time around was like a whole new experience. I was able to uncover new things about the program, e.g. not because the instruction said one trend per slide meant I could have only one graphic on the slide, but rather I just had to take the time to animate and coordinate my different graphics. The easiest part of this assignment was getting my presentation onto YouTube, although it was my first time it was a very simple process. The most difficult part was doing this write up, formatting, citing and referencing are the two concepts during this entire year that have given me the most trouble. All that being said, I very much enjoyed the process, I learnt so much, there are things going on out there in technology that I was totally unaware of until now. I especially enjoyed learning how to create a movie, a skill which will come in very handy both personally and professionally. I really do believe that my Trends for 2015 will become a reality, especially if the fields of Instructional Design, Technology and Distance Education continues its current momentum.
