On 23rd o September we had an lCl Workshop on concrete
roads w|th about a hundred part|c|pants, aga|n at llT Madras.
Experts covered top|cs rang|ng rom des|gn and construct|on
to case stud|es and po||cy |ssues re|ated to the proper execu-
t|on o concrete pavements |n lnd|a. Th|s |n|t|at|ve has cer-
ta|n|y he|ped |n c|ar|y|ng doubts and |n g|v|ng con|dence to
pub||c author|t|es so we hope to see a |ot more concrete
roads |n Tam|| Nadu soon. Thanks go to Pro. A. veeraragavan,
Mr. K. Jayasankar and Mr. K. P. Pradeep or tak|ng the |n|t|at|ve

ln August, l was |n Kyoto, Japan, or the 3rd lnternat|ona| Con-
erence on Susta|nab|e Construct|on Mater|a|s and Techno|o-
g|es that was organ|zed by the Japan Concrete lnst|tute, n|-
vers|ty o W|scons|n-M||waukee (SA) and Coventry n|vers|ty
(K). lt was good exposure to the research be|ng carr|ed out
|n Japan on construct|on mater|a|s, espec|a||y on the durab||-
|ty o concrete structures. What were a|so very |mpress|ve are
the d|sc|p||ne and organ|zat|ona| p|ann|ng |n that country. l am
happy to say that there were many de|egates rom lnd|a, and
we certa|n|y en|oyed the hosp|ta||ty o the Japanese. l do hope
more and more researchers and pract|s|ng eng|neers rom
lnd|a part|c|pate |n conerences abroad to see what |s be|ng
done e|sewhere andbr|ngback the best pract|ces andcustoms.
There |s a |ot to |earn rom others and we have a |ong way to
go!

Management Law |n 1986. The Waste Management Law
|nc|uded the estab||shment o the nat|ona| p|an on waste
management and regu|at|on o perm|ts and ac|||t|es or waste
treatment compan|es. ln 1992, Law on resource Sav|ng and
Acce|erat|on o Peuse/Pecyc||ng was enacted to m|n|m|ze
the waste generat|on and max|m|ze reuse/recyc||ng toward
rea||zat|on o a c|osed-|oop resource recyc||ng soc|ety. More
recent|y, Law on Acce|erat|on o C&D Waste reuse/Pecyc||ng
was enacted |n 2005 that espec|a||y emphas|zed sequent|a|
demo||t|on o C&D wastes and ut|||zat|on o recyc|ed aggre-
gates rom demo||shed concretes among others.
Technologies for Utilizationof DemolishedConcrete
The C&D waste are d|v|ded |nto our d|erent groups |n Korea:
(1) concrete |nc|ud|ng aspha|t concrete, br|cks, b|ocks, (2)
non-combust|b|e wastes other than concrete, (3) combust|b|e
wastes, and (4) m|xed wastes. Among the our groups o C&D
wastes, the |rst group takes about 80% by wt. as shown |n
F|g. 1 (b) andneeds act|ve ut|||zat|on. ln 2009, wh||e 42.1 m||||on
tons o concrete was generated, the eect|ve recyc||ng rate
was 36%: recyc|ed aggregates took 1.5% and usage or the
product|on o concrete products such as concrete b|ocks was
6%wh||e usage as road sub-base mater|a| took the rema|n|ng
port|on.

The techno|og|ca| aspects o the construct|on and demo||t|on
waste management was rev|ewed based on recent pract|ce
and research resu|ts |n Korea |n terms o susta|nab|||ty. The

aggregate product|on, mechan|ca| propert|es o the concretes
|nc|ud|ng recyc|ed aggregates, ut|||zat|on techno|og|es o
bottom ash to produce aggregates, CO - based des|gn chart

v|ronmenta| |mpacts o aggregates product|on based on
LCA. The resu|ts o the |nvest|gat|on revea| that there are

ntroduction
Construct|on |ndustry has h|stor|ca||y been very |mportant
and |s st||| one o the |argest |ndustr|es |n korea. nortunate|y,
the construct|on-re|ated env|ronmenta| |mpact |s very |arge.
ln Korea, |t |s est|mated that the construct|on |ndustry consumes
about 30% o natura| resources and 35% o energy and |s
respons|b|e or about 35%o green house gas em|ss|on when
the bu||d|ng operat|on(|.e. heat|ng and coo||ng) |s |nc|uded.
ln 2006, the construct|on and demo||t|on waste (C&D waste)
took 51.4% o a|| wastes generated |n Korea as shown |n |g.
1(a). 1) Area or poss|b|e |and||| |s gett|ng scarcer wh||e the
pro|ect|on |s such that the C&D waste generat|on w||| urther
|ncrease |n the next 20 years as many structures bu||t |n 1960s
through 1980s dur|ng the econom|c boom per|od |s appro-

natura| and / or recyc|ed FA. F|g. 5 (a) revea|s about 10%
strength reduct|on |n case o cy||nders ut|||z|ng h|gh qua||ty FA
w|th 100% rep|acement rat|o wh||e F|g. 5 (b) revea|s the
s|m||ar 10% strength reduct|on |n case o |ower qua||ty FA w|th
70% rep|acement rat|o. ln case o h|gh qua||ty recyc|ed FA, no
s|gn||cant strength reduct|on |s shown w|th the rep|acement
rat|os upto 60%.

than those pred|cted by the re|evant equat|on o the KCl
Concrete Structura| Des|gn Code. On the other hand, the
modu|us o rupture determ|ned us|ng p|a|n concrete beams (
under our po|nt |oad|ng ) revea|ed h|gher va|ues o modu|us
o rupture than pred|cted by the des|gn equat|on as shown |n
F|g. 8.
Tests of reinforced concrete members under flexure, com-
pressionandshear
L|m|ted number o member structura| tests has a|so been
perormed w|thresu|ts summar|zed as o||ows:
- F|exura| tests o seven re|norced concrete beams revea|ed
the |exura| perormance |n terms o strength and duct|||ty
sat|sy|ng m|n|mum requ|rements o the KCl Concrete
Structura| Des|gn Code. The Max|mum |oads d|ered |n
between spec|mens by |ess than 3 % regard|ess o the
rep|acement rat|os o recyc|ed FA o 0, 70, and 100%.
- Compress|on tests o |ve short co|umns revea|ed the peak
|oads that d|ered between spec|mens by |ess than 6%
regard|ess o the rep|acement rat|os o the recyc|ed FA o 0,
30, 60, 70, and 100%.
- ln beam shear tests, the shear strengths o the beams w|th
recyc|ed FA up to 70% were comparab|e to that o the beam
w|thnatura| aggregates.
Overa|| resu|ts o th|s spec||c exper|menta| |nvest|gat|on
|nd|cated the poss|b|||ty o us|ng up to 60 to 70% rep|acement
o the recyc|ed FA |n the uture |n case o a 27 Mpa strength
concrete.
UtilizationTechnologies Of ndustrial By-Products
A|though stee| s|ag and coa| ash are not construct|on and
demo||t|on wastes, the |aw on Pesource Sav|ng and
Acce|erat|on o Peuse/Pecyc||ng |n Korea spec||es both stee|
s|ag and coa| ash as spec|a||y des|gnated by-products so
that they canbe qua|||ed as waste.
Coal ash
The coa| ash generat|on was 9.3 m||||on tons |n 2011 (7.1
m||||on tons o |y ash and 2.2 m||||on tons o bottom ash ) that
showed about 55% |ncrease over the amount generated |n
2005 due to add|t|on o new coa|-|red power p|ants. The
demand o oss|| ue|s or the coa|-|red power p|ant |s st|||
|ncreas|ng wh|ch |nd|cates that the amount o coa| ash as by-
product o the p|ant operat|on w||| a|so |ncrease |n the uture.
ln 2008, 76% o |y ash was recyc|ed wh||e the usage was as
the raw mater|a| or cement and the m|nera| adm|xture or
concrete, etc. On the other hand, on|y 29% o bottom ash was
ut|||zed as aggregates, cement rawmater|a|, etc, |n 2008. For
|ncreased ut|||zat|on o coa| ash, there |s a newp||ot product|on
K S F 2526

Wh||e the stee| makers |n Korea produced 68.5 m||||on tons o
stee| (42.1 m||||on tons rom b|ast urnace and 26.4 m||||on
tons rome|ectr|careurnace) |n2011, thestee| s|aggenerat|on
was about 40% o the stee| product|on. F|g. 11 summar|zes

ConcludingRemarks
Th|s paper |ntended to summar|ze act|v|t|es current|y under
progress |n Korea |n an eort to m|t|gate the env|ronmenta|
|mpact |n the area o construct|on and demo||t|on waste
management. ln the uture, the concrete structures shou|d be
des|gned to have |onger serv|ce ||ves so that generat|on o
demo||shed concrete can be m|n|m|zed. New des|gn codes,
standards, and spec||cat|ons, such as perormance based
des|gn, need to be deve|oped that eas||y a||ow the use o

A|uva, Coch|n on 26.07.2013. The Construct|on s|te |s |ocated |n
A|uva at a d|stance o 5 kms rom A|uva Junct|on, Coch|n. The
company |s headed by Er. Poh|th Prabhu, ME, Manag|ng
D|rector, Yasoram Bu||ders. The ob|ect|ve o the v|s|t |s to acqu|re
know|edge about mu|t|-storey bu||d|ng and |ts construct|on
techn|ques. lt gave rea| ||e exposure to our c|v|| eng|neer|ng
students about modernmethods used |nthe construct|on.
The tota| area o apartment bu||d|ng (G9) |s 3500 sq.t |n the
ground|oor, success|ve|y upto9th |oor. The cost o est|mat|on or
the bu||d|ng to be around 14 crores. Crusher sand |s used as a
|ne aggregate |nsteado us|ngr|ver sand|n th|s apartment. Two ||ts
are prov|ded |n the apartment. The |oors p|an |s |dent|ca| or 1 to
5 |oors (3 |ats each), then 6 to 8 |oors (2 |ats each), and then 9th
|oor |s hav|ng on|y 1 |at. The apartment |s constructed as a
ramed structure and e|ectr|c v|brators are used or proper
compact|on|ns|abs. F|em|shBond |s used or br|ck bond|ng.
The eng|neer o the s|te gave a deta||ed exp|anat|on on masonry
work, p|aster|ng m|x proport|ons o water / cement, p|aster|ng
techn|ques and cur|ng process. Th|s |ndustr|a| v|s|t gave us a
broad pract|ca| know|edge about the apartment construct|ons
and a|so we stud|ed about the |mp|ementat|on o var|ous
techn|ques o construct|on|nC|v|| Eng|neer|ng pro|ects.
