Transportation Analysis

1. Transportation analysis using TOW program

Preparation
1) Under Training Project, create Tow subdirectory
2) Under Tow subdirectory, create Tow Inertia directory
3) Copy SACINP.DAT model file from Static directory to Tow Inertia directory and
rename it to SACINP.DECK.
General Information
A complete tow analysis includes the following parts:
1) The static analysis for dead load only
2) The tow analysis for transportation inertia loads
3) Combine the results from the above two analyses to generate a combined common
solution file
4) Post processing, including member code checks and joint can checks.
Modifying model for tow inertia load generation
Delete the structure below elevation (+ 4.0 m), delete conductor joints 705F, 706F, 707F, and
708F at elevation (+ 15.3 m).
Delete surface weight group LIVE, remove it from weight combination WTCMB line.
Add joints at elevation (+ 5.5 m) on each leg, name them 601S, 602S, 603S, and 604S; Add
joints 0.5 m below the bottom of deck leg joints, name them 601, 602, 603, and 604, and set
the joint fixities as 111111.
Add support can members below deck legs connecting joints 301-301L, 602-602L, 603603L, and 604-604L, set the member group name as GAP, and define the GAP group as OD
= 106.68 cm, and wall thickness = 3.81 cm, release all three member moments at the bottom
end, and define the member type as Compression.
Around each support can joint 601, 602, 603, and 604 add 4 tie-down support joints, name
them D101 to D104 for joints around joint 601, D201 to D204 for joints around joint 602,
D301 to D304 for joints around joint 603, and D401 to D404 for joints around joint 604.
Add tie-down members from joints S101~S104 to 601S, S201~S204 to 602S, S301~S304 to
603S, and S401~S404 to 604S, set the member group name as SEA, and define SEA as OD =
30.48 cm, and the wall thickness = 1.905 cm, define member type as No Load.
Create a seastate input file SEAINP.DEAD for dead load only
Create a seastate input file SEAINP.DEAD only contain the dead load, see the following.

Create tow input file TOWINP.TRAN

Tow options need to be set to MN units and center of motion,
Coordinate X = -75.0 m, Y = 3.5 m and Z = 4.5 m
Weight combination group MASS is selected by using INCWGT line for inertia load
generation.
Tow input file includes motions of 12.5 degree roll @ 10 seconds period, 10 degree pitch @
15 seconds period, and the heave acceleration of 0.2 G.
There are totally 8 load cases will be created using MOTION line. The gravity is only
included in the lateral forces only.

Use combined common solution file CMBCSF.TOE to perform the member code check,
joint can check, and generate the postvue database.

2. Transportation analysis using Seastate program

Preparation
1) Under Tow subdirectory, create Seastate Inertia directory
2) Copy the following files from Tow Inertia directory to Seastate Inertia directory:
DECK.DAT, SEAINP.DEAD, CMBINP.DAT, GAPDEAD.RUNX, and
CMBTOW.RUNX.
General Information
The procedure of the transportation analysis using Seastate program is almost the same as the
analysis using Tow program. The only difference is to use Seastate program to generate the
tow inertia loads.
Create a Seastete input file SEAINP.TRAN
Define center ID ROLL using CENTER line and set the coordinates as X = -75.0 m, Y =
3.5 m and Z = 4.5 m.
12.5 degree roll @ 10 seconds period, 10 degree pitch @ 15 seconds period and heave
acceleration of 0.2 G will be used in MOTION line to generate accelerations. The option of
gravity loads included in lateral force only is selected.
