Newman English 101: Rhetoric 13 Friday 2013 Statement of Scope for the Annotated Bibliography America's working men and women spend their lives hard at work in the jobs that they presume are safe. Injuries in the workplace have increased putting the life of workers at risk. Safety in the workplace is not emphasized enough by the employers. Not only are the employees not safe, but workplace injuries have shown to cost companies and businesses big money. The cost of casualties in the workplace have undoubtedly risen. OSHA is constantly regulating and implementing safety in the workplace. Companies may get fined from life threatening hazards to workplace casualties. Because the cost of injuries have risen in the workplace, companies should improve their companys awareness of safety in the workplace in order to strive for less injuries and thus, a decrease in cost. This essay will explore employee safety in the workplace, as well as, the cost of workplace casualties that affect the companies. The safety precautions in the workplace are not fully emphasized to the employees. I will examine the importance of putting into concern a workers safety and reveal that through proper regulatory training a decrease in casualties can be achieved. I will disclose that a decrease in the costs of injuries may result from the companys ability to train employers and emphasize safety. This selected bibliography includes sources that imply safety in the workplace, analyze the cost that casualties have on the workplace and give insight on the widely known administration called OSHA. Susan Currie provides information on one of the most dangerous jobs in the United States. Kim O'Connell's "Safety First" introduces us to OSHA and the growing cost of unsafe working conditions. The Ergonomics articles, including Weisss, expresses the importance of implementing safety in the workplace and safety plans amongst workers. Torress provides insight on OSHAs safety plans through an interview with Edwin Folke, an OSHA chairmen.

The source reveals that construction companies have an understanding of implementing safety is essential, as well as, money saving to companies. Currie explains that larger contactors are becoming proactive by training their new employees and provide better orientations to the job, as well as, hands on training.

This source begins by describing an work casualty were a woman was killed when her body was pinned on top of a refuse truck by one of the vehicles levers. O'Connell includes information on mortality rates, how waste industries measure there safety records and explains a few of the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) penalties. O'Connell's article reveals that workplace injuries have risen in cost resulting in waste companies to train their employees and encourage the safest operating practices. It is expressed that employees will have to be trained to set up plans to prevent hazards and to avoid exposure to any workplace hazards.

Throughout the source Edwin expresses that he wants more emloyers and employees to establish OSHA as being a primary resource for workplace safety. In addition to speaking with Edwin Foulke, this source provides information on OSHA's mission to increase involvement in the workplace as well as the importance of enforcing emergency preparedness.

Weiss explains how manufacturing companies have been practicing ergonomics when changes are made in the workplace to improve safety. Ergonomics help to establish a safer workplace by bringing forth less dangerous equipment and machinery to the workplace.
