After placing third in the US-
Bands State Championship on
Oct. 20 at Rutgers University, the
West Windsor-Plainsboro High
School South Pirate Marching
Band advanced to the USBands
National Championship on Nov. 2
at MetLife Stadium, where they
secured sixth place overall for
Group 2 open bands.
The band competed against al-
most 200 other marching bands
from around the country, and was
evaluated by a panel of adjudica-
tors that judged them based on
design, execution and instruc-
tion.
Their show, entitled Connec-
tion, involved two contrasting
concepts disconnection, shown
through songs One Man Show
and Stroke of Genius by Jeff
Beal from the movie Pollock;
and connection, shown through
songs To Build a Home by Cine-
matic Orchestra and Ode to Joy
by Ludwig van Beethoven, ac-
cording to Louisa Ho, co-presi-
dent of the HSS Band Boosters.
The band started working in
the spring and continued to
progress diligently throughout
the summer, she said. It has
been rehearsing intensively
throughout the fall, and has per-
formed their show at most HSS

Because of their unconstitu-
tional nature, two types of politi-
cal programming might be re-
moved from the townships gov-
ernment access channel.
The motion was made by the
West Windsor Township Council
at its meeting on Nov. 25, accord-
ing to Sharon Young, township
clerk.
Under the proposed ordinance,
two of the three types of political
programming under Chapter 60,
Cable Television: Programming
Policies and Procedures for Gov-
ernmental Access Channel, will
be removed. Both have to do with
election-related coverage.
If passed, declared candidates
and their spouses and agents who
have publicly announced their in-
tention to run for office will no
longer be allowed to advocate any
cause, viewpoint or opposed poli-
cy of a partisan nature on the
channel 100 days prior to the elec-
tion.
During the process of elec-
tions this year, we found them to
be unconstitutional, Young said.
The only aspect of political
programming that will remain
under this section will be the first
clause, which states the channel
is not intended as a mechanism to
promote any particular issue or
candidate for public office. How-
ever, this provision will not pre-
clude the channel from cablecast-
ing non-partisan programs spon-
sored by mutual third parties de-
signed to inform and educate the
citizens of election issues and
candidates.
Every other aspect of program-
ming on the channel, including
the live broadcast of all types of
township meetings, outside-origi-
nated programming, bulletin
board information, emergency
broadcasts and promotional an-
nouncements, will remain un-
changed.
The public hearing and possi-
ble adoption of this ordinance
will be held at the Councils next
meeting on Dec. 9.
To view the full ordinance, go
to westwindsornj.org.
Political programming might be
removed from township channel

provided by the West Windsor
Township Police Department.
On Nov. 8 at 4:33 p.m., Officer
Montgomery responded to Wal-
mart on report of a shoplifter
who had just fled the store. Dis-
patch further advised the
shoplifter entered a brown Ford
pick-up that fled the area last seen
heading toward Quakerbridge
Road. As Montgomery gathered
information at the scene, other
patrol units checked the sur-
rounding area for the suspect ve-
hicle. Sgt. Lee observed and
stopped the suspect, an 18-year-
old male, on Route 1 at Washing-
ton Road. The passenger, later
identified as the suspect, was
taken into custody for the
shoplifting. He was transported
to headquarters, processed for the
arrest, and released on his own
recognizance. The amount of
merchandise involved in the
shoplifting was $211.18.
On Nov. 8, Officer Insalaco re-
sponded to the Anthropology
store at Princeton Market Fair on
report of a theft. Upon his ar-

sentative. She advised between
September of this year and Nov.
8, more than $3,000 worth of store
merchandise went missing. The
exact amount of the missing
property is $3,126. This is an ac-
tive investigation.
On Nov. 8 at 6:26 p.m., Officer
Magistro responded to Walmart
at Nassau Park on report of a
shoplifter in custody. Upon his ar-
rival, he was advised by loss pre-
vention personnel that a 23-year-
old male concealed $9.92 worth of
merchandise and fled the store
without paying. He was taken
into custody, transported to police
headquarters, processed for the
arrest and later released on his
own recognizance.
On Nov. 9 at 4:23 p.m., Officer
Barber and Officer Montgomery
responded to Walmart on report
of a shoplifter in custody. Upon
their arrival, they met with loss
prevention officers and were ad-
vised a 35-year-old male con-
cealed $48.32 worth of merchan-
dise on his person and fled the
store. He was taken into custody,
transported to headquarters,
processed for the arrest, and later
released on his own recognizance.
On Nov. 9 at 5:01 p.m., Officer
Insalaco and Officer Hojnacki re-
sponded to Kohls department
store on report of two female
shoplifters in custody. They were
advised that a 22-year-old female
and a 23-year-old female con-
cealed property on their persons
and passed all points of sale with-
out paying for the merchandise.
They were both taken into cus-
tody, transported to headquarters,
processed for the arrest, and later
released on their own recogni-
zance. The amount of the loss
was $614 in merchandise.

The award-winning Bravura
Philharmonic Orchestra, based
in the West Windsor/Plainsboro
area, is presenting its annual Hol-
iday Concert on Sunday, Dec. 8 at
7 p.m. The Bravura Philharmonic
Orchestra consists of profession-
al musicians, high-level ama-
teurs, university students, and
gifted pre-college students. Its
conductor, Chiu-Tze Lin, is a
highly acclaimed musician who
has performed around the world
and is active throughout the tri-
state area.
The concert will be held at the
Princeton Alliance Church, locat-
ed at 20 Schalks Crossing, on the
corner of Scudders Mill Road and
Schalks Crossing, in Plainsboro.
A community chorus of singers
from area choruses and church
choirs will bring us selections
from the Christmas section of
Handels Messiah." It will be
conducted by Dr. John Leonard,
director of choral activities at
The College of New Jersey.
Leonard has led and prepared
TCNJs choral ensembles in per-
formances throughout the tri-
state region including multiple
concerts at Lincoln Center and
the prestigious Great Music at
St. Barts concert series in New
York. Under his leadership,
TCNJs Chorale has commis-
sioned, performed and recorded
numerous premieres. Leonard
was the artistic director of Can-
tus Novus chamber choir in
Bucks County, Pa., and produced
the ensembles first professional
recording. Leonard received his
Doctorate in conducting from In-
diana University, and has taught
at the primary through collegiate
levels.
The concert will also feature
the world premiere of "A Christ-
mas for Everyone" by the 17-year-
old composer, Matthew Liu. This
composition is a musical journey
for choir and orchestra that takes
us around the world, from daz-
zling Latin dance rhythms to ex-
otic, expansive Asian sounds, and
impressions of gorgeous music
from Europe. With the choir
singing out with encouraging
words to all, "A Christmas for
Everyone" shares a message of a
Christmas for every nation and
generation to cherish and enjoy.
Matthew Liu is a senior from the
Marlboro High School. He has
won the grand prize of the NJ
Music Educators Association
Young Composers Competition.
His work was featured nationally
at the National Association for
Music Education Concert.
The 17-year-old violinist and
concertmaster of the Bravura
Youth Orchestra, NaYoung Yang,
will perform the Scottish Fantasy
by Bruch. NaYoung Yang, from
Freehold, is a senior at the
Biotech Vocational High School of
Monmouth County, and a con-
summate musician. She is a stu-
dent in the Julliard pre-college
program as a student of Ann Set-
zer. NaYoung has performed as a
soloist in Alice Tully Hall in Lin-
coln Center, Carnegie Hall and
Merkin Concert Hall.
The concert program will in-
clude the Water Music by Han-
del, with its familiar and festive
melodies. The orchestra will also
perform a lively celebration of
Russian tradition with the over-
ture to Glinkas Ruslan and Lud-
milla. The Festive Sounds of
Hanukkah represents a holiday
tradition from the rich cultural
diversity of Central New Jersey.
The audience will be invited to
join in the ever-popular holiday
music sing-along at the end of the
concert.
General admission is $15, and

hanksgiving has passed. Left-
overs have been consumed.
And end-of-the-year holiday
decorations are being proudly dis-
played.
Here at Elauwit, that means only
one thing its time to get rolling on
Deck the Paws and Help a Collie.
For newcomers, Deck the Paws and
Help a Collie is our annual animal
shelter drive. The unusual name is a
really bad play on Deck the Halls
with Boughs of Holly. Indeed, more
animals than just collies are helped by
the drive.
Heres how it works:
Our generous drop-spot locations
have volunteered to place a donation
tub in their office. You can visit the of-
fice and drop off aid to animal shelters
and rescue groups. Theyre always
looking for dog and cat food, cat litter,
cleaning supplies (especially bleach),
office supplies, gift cards, blankets,
bedding and, of course, treats and
toys.
The 2013 version of our holiday
drive is in full force. This year, we have
five locations that will serve as drop
spots, or donation centers. These are
places that have volunteered to place a
tub in their lobbies or otherwise allow
people to visit them to make dona-
tions.
This years drop spots are:
Oldies & Goodies, 101 W. Merchant
St., Audubon
Cherry Hill Volvo, 1810 Route 70
West, Cherry Hill
Elauwit, 108 Kings Highway East,
3rd Floor, Haddonfield
Burl-Moor Driben Animal Hospi-
tal, 104 Kings Highway, Moorestown
Holman Toyota-Scion, 1301 Route
73 North, Mt. Laurel
Every year, we deliver dozens of car-
loads of food, toys, cleaning supplies
and more to local shelters. We want to
do the same this year.
But it all begins with you and your
generosity.

holiday season.

USBands competitions. They
have received many compliments
from the WW-P community, and
the USBands judging panels have
awarded high scores for their ex-
cellence.
Band president Zachary Singer
said hes impressed by how far
the band has come this year.
The level of excellence we
manage to achieve every year is
outstanding, and I am especially
proud of how much each member
has grown, he said.
The band is led by Ali Carra-
her, director of bands at HSS.
It is such a honor to have the
opportunity to work with my stu-
dents, she said. They are kind,
hard-working and committed so I
could not ask for anything else. I
am so proud of them.
Along with Carraher, the band
is also supported by a team of
adult instructors, including Mike
Davis, assistant director and
music arrangement; Chris Vitale,
drill design; Andrew Ricketts,
battery percussion; Chelsea Mc-
Farland, pit percussion; and Jere-
my Hickson and Melanie Bugher,
color guard members.
The band is also led by student
officers, and supported by a
strong parent booster organiza-
tion known as the HSS Band
Boosters, led by co-presidents Ho
and Jackie Houck.
The Pirate Marching Band is
a terrific experience for stu-
dents, Ho said. They work hard,
become a tight-knit team, develop
leadership skills, perform a beau-
tiful show, support the HSS foot-
ball team and cheerleaders, and
have fun all at the same time. We
couldnt do it without the amaz-
ing team of adult instructors and
the parents. Thanks to the school
district and all those who have
helped out this year.
USBands was formed in the fall
of 1988 to provide high school
band programs with a competi-
tive circuit featuring the best
judges from across the continent
and a world-class venue for the
US Scholastic Band Champi-
onship.
Today, USBands includes more
than 700 participating high
school marching bands. Each
year, bands are offered 150 festival
opportunities, as well as invita-
tions to compete at major region-
al championships and the US-
Bands national, state and region-
al championships.
Bands in USbands compete in
12 different classes from Class I A
