25 November 2013 Christine Milne Australian Greens Leader Canberra Office Senate Suite SG-112 Parliament House Canberra ACT 2600 Dear Ms. Milne Deforestation Crisis in Australia We are a student group from Rosebay Secondary College known as Be Clean, Be Green. We are writing to you to alert you the importance of deforestation crisis in Australia. Given this crisis, our group has taken various initiatives and efforts towards reducing deforestation. Deforestation has a real detrimental impact on our world. Illegal logging by chopping down trees for farming and commercial purposes lead to many serious problems such as flooding, warming of weather, pollution, rise of sea level, unpredictable and harsh weather and many more. A research report cited that global warming is destroying our magnificent Great Barrier Reef, which is already experiencing severe bleaching due to a 0.4C rise in water temperature. Each year, about 60% of our reef is subject to some bleaching. Similarly

the rising sea level is leading to more flooding and we have witnessed the Queensland disastrous floods in 2010. Apart from these detrimental effects, we have a more important reason of fighting against deforestation, that is preserving the forest heritage. Forests are very important to our precious world and for our children. If we do not stop now, our children will not enjoy the beauty of flora and fauna of our earth. The majority of people do not care about deforestation because of their greed and selfish ambition in building amusement parks, farms, buildings and more. Such buildings and achievements may seem great now but rapid wide development through deforestation cannot be undone because trees take many years to be fully-grown. We seek the Greens party support and partnership to create awareness of the seriousness of deforestation because if we do not stop now, then our whole world will be gone. We believe that Australians can help reduce deforestations through their participation in various campaigns and activities. For example, Plant a Tree Day is a great way to help deforestation. This is a day where each person can plant at least one tree. This can make a big difference to our community if more of us help and participate. In addition, the community can stop buying and wasting wood products such as paper and cardboard, wooden furniture, wooden stationary and many more. Instead, we can help reduce this wastage by recycling wood, books and papers. We, the students at our college are mindful of this wastage and we are focused on recycling. Greens Party is known for your strong climate defense action and we are convinced that Green Party should take deforestation seriously because unless community and our nations begin to see the seriousness of this crisis, deforestation will continue. We also believe that given your leadership in environmental campaigns, our nation and the people of

Australia will listen. Therefore, if Greens Party leads the awareness efforts and campaigns, we will receive better outcome and results from the community. For a start, we sincerely hope you will partner with us in the community of Dover Heights to sponsor recycling activities and awareness campaign again deforestation. In addition, we urge the Greens party to influence other the governments in signing treaties against deforestation. From all the explanation given, Stop deforestation and make a difference to save our world. Remember, being green starts with you.

Sincerely, Be Clean, Be Green Group Rose Bay Secondary College, 7F.
