Self-study, on-demand simulation training

KONGSBERG has capitalized on recent advances in Information Technology and e-Learning off-the-shelf products to develop and implement flexible simulation training solutions for Ships Bridge and Engine Room training. With KMs unique e-Learning system, maritime training centers can now deploy simulation training exercises to students, without the presence of instructors. Depending on the training centers use of technology and policy, they can either run self-study exercises in-house via their LAN network or they can use a secure internet connection and allow students to get access to exercises through a web-enabled / internet solution. KONGSBERG offers ready-made e-Learning exercises both for the Ships Bridge and the Engine Room Simulator, in addition to the possibility to make own exercises tailored to the training centers needs. The student PCs are pre-loaded with the simulator software and the simulation exercises are typically downloaded from a Learning Management Server (LMS). The LMS will keep a record of the students score and performance in the exercises. Alternatively, the students can start without the LMS the license server will then hold the exercises.

Maximum flexibility
With the KONGSBERG e-coach system, students can run simulation exercises on their own but just as if an instructor was there. This allows for the greatest flexibility for training - students can learn at their own pace, and when it best fits their schedule. As a result, simulator training is no longer confined to the walls of the school or scheduled class times.

High fidelity simulator training

KONGSBERGs Simulator e-Learning system uses the same simulation core as the desktop and full mission simulators, ensuring the highest fidelity and realism. This also supports commonality with the customers existing simulator infrastructure. Existing exercises can be taken from the full mission simulator and adapted to run on students PCs when configured with the exact same ship models and geographical areas.

Over the Internet, distance training

High quality distance simulator training is now possible through the use of a LMS, a secure access to the training centers network and an Internet connection. This enables the training center to reach out and connect to students and customers and to develop new market segments.

Off-the-shelf simulation modules

For a turnkey delivery, KONGSBERG has created a series of standardized simulation modules for e-Learning and exercises based on the STCW 95 requirements and IMO Model Courses. These exercises rely extensively on KONGSBERGs unique e-Coach technology. The following modules are currently available: Navigation modules based on POLARIS Ships Bridge Simulator: Module 01: Radar Basic Operation Module 02: Radar Plotting Module 03: Radar Navigation Module 04: ARPA Steering & Sailing Rules Panel Tutorials Engineering modules based on NEPTUNE Engine Room Simulator: Module 01: Electric Power Module 02: Steam Generation Plant Module 03: Fuel Oil Handling Module 04: Refrigeration Module 05: ME Lube Oil Systems Module 06: ME Fresh Water System

Please contact Kongsberg Maritime Simulation & Training for a full description of these modules.

Benefits
Self study simulation training KONGSBERGs e-Learning system is designed to fully immerse users in realistically modeled environments and scenarios to build knowledge, exercise required skills, and to assess performance. Flexible, sophisticated learning on demand Students can access the stored exercises according to the policy given by the training centers. The training center or school can make new exercises available as additional training needs arise, ensuring a highly flexible and cost effective system for student, instructor and vessel owner/operator. E-Coach managed learning With KONGSBERGs highly flexible e-Coach system, students can train around the clock, but they are never left to their own devices. Offering pre-defined in-depth instructor messages, the e-Coach provides automatic, instructions whilst students work alone. In addition, a full student activity logging is possible when including a LMS in the e-Learning set-up. Cost-effective licensing KONGSBERGs concurrent licensing system expands on a small core number of licenses through shared usage by a large number of students. The initial procurement cost is therefore reduced and shared among a larger pool of users. Industry standard compliant KONGSBERGs Simulation e-Learning exercises can run from any SCORM 1.2 compliant LMS, enabling easy integration into any existing e-Learning set-up.

Supplied by KM:
