Jackalopes Receive Kiwanis Award, Install New Officers

by Bailee Baxter The Jackalopes 4-H Club received one of the Kiwanis Awards this past Wednesday at the Kiwanis Meeting. To qualify, the club had to participate in community service (highway cleanup), have a high percentage of members show projects at the fair and have new members join their club. This would be the first time the Jackalopes have received this award in many years. This is significant because the average age of a Jackalopes member is 11. At a recent Jackalopes meeting, a new slate of officers took their places and welcomed special guest and Senior 4-H Member, Tee Aune, of the Tampico Boys. Aune helped new officers learn to lead the meeting and then gave a very informative demonstration on How to Put Together a Bridle. Dylan Linder then gave a demonstration on How to Show a Rabbit. Other business that took place included planning the club Christmas party, discussion of outstanding work in wreath sales and the Installation of Officers. The new officers are: President, Morgan Paju; VP for Membership, Cheyenne Paju; VP for Programs, Dylan Linder; Secretary, Micah Tweten; Treasurer, Kate Parks; Parliamentarian, Rachel Billingsley; Community Service Leader, Niki Turner; Historian, Lexie Pehlke; Recreation Leader, James Johnston; and Reporter, Bailee Baxter. New members were welcomed: Tori Pehlke, James Johnston, Alesia and Reanna Cotton.

Tee Aune of the Tampico Boys 4-H Club was asked come to the Jackelopes 4-H meeting to model a life-skill to the younger club members.

WinterWeather Outlook:
Winter is likely to offer little relief to the drought-stricken U.S. Southwest, and drought is likely to develop across parts of the Southeast as below-average precipitation is favored in these areas of the country, according to NOAAs annual Winter Outlook announced today. Drought has been an ongoing concern across parts of the Southwest and Texas for nearly three years, and after some relief during the past few months, drought is likely to redevelop during winter. Sea surface temperatures across the equatorial Pacific have been near average since spring 2012, and forecasters expect that to continue through the winter. This means that neither El Nio nor La Nia is expected to influence the climate during the upcoming winter.

Good chance of colder temps and higher precip here

Its a challenge to produce a long-term winter forecast without the climate pattern of an El Nio or a La Nia in place out in the Pacific because those climate patterns often strongly influence winter temperature and precipitation here in the United States, said Mike Halpert, acting director of NOAAs Climate Prediction Center. Without this strong seasonal influence, winter weather is often affected by short-term climate patterns, such as the Arctic Oscillation, that are not predictable beyond a week or two. So its important to pay attention to your local daily weather forecast throughout the winter. The Precipitation Outlook favors: Below-average precipitation in the Southwest, Southeast and the

Alaskan panhandle. Above-average precipitation in the Northern Rockies, particularly over Montana and northern Wyoming and in Hawaii. The Temperature Outlook favors: Below-average temperatures in the Northern Plains and the Alaskan Panhandle. Above-average temperatures in the Southwest, the South-Central U.S., parts of the Southeast, New England and western Alaska. The rest of the country falls into the equal chance category, meaning that there is not a strong or reliable enough climate signal in these areas to favor one category over the others, so they have an equal chance for above-, near-, or below-normal temperatures and/or precipitation. r C i t i ze n M

Riders capture 101st Grey Cup

Martin Short was there. So was Tom Hanks. Short is a Hamilton guy, and his buddy Tom spent his drive to Mosaic Stadium in Regina yelling the traditional Oskee Wee-Wee chant at passersby. Too bad for them, however, although Hanks said following the game, This was worth every second. Kory Sheets ran for a record 197 yards and two TDs to power the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a 45-23 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the 101st Grey Cup game Sunday night. Sheets delighted the raucous hometown crowd of 44,710 by smashing the previous mark of 169 yards, set in 1956 by Edmontons Johnny Bright. Sheets, who was named the games MVP, was especially impressive in the first half, running for 128 yards and a TD in leading Saskatchewan to a commanding 31-6 halftime advantage, the first time a team has scored that many points in the first half of a Grey Cup. Hamilton got to within 15 points to begin the fourth, but then the Roughies got their wind back, and put it away. Oh, that Rider Pride!
