Welcome to the RIBA London Events Bulletin- 11 August 2011 Complimenting the range of activities undertaken by the region and its partners, this bulletin features a summary of forthcoming events for members happening in and around London in the coming weeks and into Autumn. Talks and debates


Cities of Tomorrow By 2020, only 4 out of 20 of the worlds largest cities and urban areas will be in developed nations (projected figures from City Mayors). What challenges are those growing cities facing? What new and innovative approaches are decision makers, planners and architects taking to meet those challenges? Featuring perspectives and comment from leading international practices, the series profiles emerging trends and metropolitan change. Sao Paulo- South America Super Nexus Tuesday 18 October 18.30-20.00 Discussion with Milton Braga, Partner, MMBB and Alexandre Hepner, Senior partner, ARKIZ, chaired by Vicky Richardson, British Council. Produced in collaboration with the Embassy of Brazil in London. Cities and the Language of Architecture by Richard Rogers, Graham Stirk and Ivan Harbour of Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners Tuesday 01 November 18.30-20.00 Richard, Graham and Ivan discuss the role of the sustainable city in the 21st century and how design affects the way we live. They will then describe the process, narrative and language of their architecture in the Far East, Europe and London. African Metropolis by David Adjaye

Tuesday 22 November 18.30-20.00 Adjaye introduces the key civic themes arising from the forthcoming publication Adjaye Africa Architecture and discusses the ever shifting contemporary African urban experience. Chaired by Justin McGuirk, Architecture and Design critic, The Guardian and followed by exclusive book signing. LKE Ozolins Lecture: Cities for People by Jan Gehl Tuesday 29 November 18.30-20.00 Jan Gehl discusses the need for re-orientation of our cities and illustrates the case for people inspired interventions and city development. Design Bites This new initiative by RIBA London and the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards features a series of high profile public talks and tours that bring together eating and drinking with cutting edge design. The behind-the-scene events, led by architects and operators, take place at landmark London dining venues and offer an exclusive insight into the design, menu and ethos behind each venture. The tours culminate with a drink and taste of something on the menu. The Dock Thursday 22 September 18.30-20.00 Part of the newly redeveloped Portobello Dock complex, The Dock kitchen is designed by Design Research Studio, under the direction of internationally renowned designer, Tom Dixon. The food is by Stevie Parle. Inamo St James Wednesday 12 October 18.30-20.00 With interiors by Macaulay Sinclair, Inamo St James is an innovative oriental fusion restaurant & bar coupling cutting edge technology with exceptional cuisine. WM Club at Arsenal/Emirates Stadium Thursday 10 November 18.30-20.00 Co-led by Jon Lee and Ben Kensell this tour will give you an insight into how a football club has taken match day hospitality to a new level.
