6 CROCHET! JANUARY 2011
This issue hits
newsstands the last
day of November. If
youre thinking its too late to whip
up a few more great crochet gifts
for family and friends, think again!
We planned a special section of
fun, head-to-toe projects that are
perfect for last-minute gift needs.
Weve got two great his-and-
her patterns: socks that include
both regular and boot lengths, and
caps that feature a colorful beret
for the gals and a slouchy beanie
in masculine tones for the guys.
In between are patterns for a fun
scarf, a beautiful floral necklace
and a soothing eye mask.
We hope this issue will inspire
your crochet whims and wishes!
Warm regards,

A MESSAGE FROM ENGLAND
I absolutely love your maga-
zine! I became a digital sub-
scriber several months ago, and I
am so impressed. I especially love
being able to access past issues of
the magazine. Tere is nothing
in the UK that I have seen that
caters to crocheters. I have always
had to shop via the Internet and
buy patterns from America.
You have made me a crochet
magazine convert!

WASHINGTON, ENGLAND
BLESSED EVENT
When I received the May
2008 issue, I immediately fell
in love with the Noahs Ark
Blanket. I decided that if we
were ever blessed with another
child, I would make that
blanket for our baby.
We are now expecting our
fourth child and here is a photo
of my own version of this de-
lightful pattern.
Thank you for all of your hard
work!

Ten years ago in New York,
a small group of loving craft-
ers combined their needlework-
ing skills to help others in their
community. Today their ever-
growing group is known as The
Handiwork Ministry.
The Handiwork Ministry,
through agencies and referrals,
provides handmade items that
offer comfort to people in need
of emotional, physical and/or
spiritual care. A sampling of
the numerous items they do-
nate includes: hot and cold
packs, afghans, shawls, hats and
walker bags.
The Handiwork Ministry
now has members from all over
the world. The success of The
Ministry has inspired its mem-
bers to put together a packet
teaching others how to begin
The Handiwork Ministry in
their own community. If you
would like to read more about
The Handiwork Ministry and
the work they are doing, or if
you would like to learn how to
start The Ministry in your own
community, go to: www.the-

Just finished the book and I LOVED IT! I couldnt put it down.
Well written and finally a book that talked about my favorite hobby
with crochet, sewing and quilting. I cant wait for the next book to
come out.

Kim C.

I just wanted to tell you that I have enjoyed your craft books and
supplies for many years. I am an avid reader, and I have read 300
books in the last 3 years. I just finished the first two books in the
Annie Series and they are the best I have read in a long time. Keep
up the good work.

Barbara G.

I just wanted to let you know how much I really enjoy reading
your Annies Attic Mysteries! I have read each book within three
days of receiving it because I just cannot put it down! I really
appreciate how these authors keep our attention throughout
the books and especially that these stories are nice and clean
with no foul language spoken and no horrible events
happening. Thank you for such a great series! I cannot
wait to read the next book!

66 CROCHET! JANUARY 2011
B Y C I N DY L O N G
If youve ever experienced the
stomach-churning, knuckle-whit-
ening terror that crocheters go
through when that happens, you
know what I mean. Last month, I
decided to go on a yarn diet and
use up all my stash before buying
anymore. Its a great way to clean
out closets and save money, plus
its such a feeling of accomplish-
ment to see all the finished proj-
ects. Thats what Ive heard, any-
way. Its only an academic theory
for me because Ive never actually
done it myself.
Anyway, I found a great pattern
for a filet tablecloth that I just love.
I dug through my stash, found sev-
eral balls of ivory thread and got
started. It came along quickly and
I was excited about my progress. I
stopped several times to size it up
against my dining table. I asked
my husband, Dan, my favorite crit-
ic and Chief Source of Income for
Yarn, what he thought. He opined:
All I know is, Im a dead man if I
spill anything on it.
I got within 30 rows of
finishing when I came to the end
of the ball I was working from.
I grabbed for the next, but there
was no next. Id have to buy more
(so much for my yarn diet), but my
store didnt have it. No store had it.
The thread was old and had been
discontinued. Yikes! The filet pat-
tern wouldnt work if I just ended
it where it was.
Suddenly, the impact of the
situation hit me full force: Id
have to rip it all out! All that work
and anticipation sadly wasted.
I couldnt face taking it apart my-
self, so I taught my daughter a
new stitch, the frog stitch (rip-it!
rip-it!).
Well, of course Im miser-
able now. I have no tablecloth, I
still have to use up all that thread
somehow, and Im out many hours
of crochet time Ill never get back.
The only thing that will make me
feel better now isyarn shopping!
Its funny how breaking a yarn diet
and breaking a real diet are both
just as fun!
