If youve ever experienced the
stomach-churning, knuckle-whit-
ening terror that crocheters go
through when that happens, you
know what I mean. Last month, I
decided to go on a yarn diet and
use up all my stash before buying
anymore. Its a great way to clean
out closets and save money, plus
its such a feeling of accomplish-
ment to see all the finished proj-
ects. Thats what Ive heard, any-
way. Its only an academic theory
for me because Ive never actually
done it myself.
Anyway, I found a great pattern
for a filet tablecloth that I just love.
I dug through my stash, found sev-
eral balls of ivory thread and got
started. It came along quickly and
I was excited about my progress. I
stopped several times to size it up
against my dining table. I asked
my husband, Dan, my favorite crit-
ic and Chief Source of Income for
Yarn, what he thought. He opined:
All I know is, Im a dead man if I
spill anything on it.
I got within 30 rows of
finishing when I came to the end
of the ball I was working from.
I grabbed for the next, but there
was no next. Id have to buy more
(so much for my yarn diet), but my
store didnt have it. No store had it.
The thread was old and had been
discontinued. Yikes! The filet pat-
tern wouldnt work if I just ended
it where it was.
Suddenly, the impact of the
situation hit me full force: Id
have to rip it all out! All that work
and anticipation sadly wasted.
I couldnt face taking it apart my-
self, so I taught my daughter a
new stitch, the frog stitch (rip-it!
rip-it!).
Well, of course Im miser-
able now. I have no tablecloth, I
still have to use up all that thread
somehow, and Im out many hours
of crochet time Ill never get back.
The only thing that will make me
feel better now isyarn shopping!
Its funny how breaking a yarn diet
and breaking a real diet are both
just as fun!
