UNDISTURBED SOIL SAMPLING, LABELLING & STORAGE

I.

INTRODUCTION

Extraction of undisturbed soil is a very tricky process, one must make sure that the sample will not break or will be exposed to moisture. Thus experiment no. 1 had to be separated into parts A & B. There will be no data and data analysis for this experiment, since it is only the extraction process. Testing and data gathering will be done in the lab. II. OBJECTIVES To successfully extract undisturbed soil samples. MATERIALS/APPARATUSES Shovel Round fencing bar trowel small flat digging tool/pocket knife beaker/large container matches stirring rod parafine/candle wax fire producing materials(alcohol lamps, or a small bon fire) measuring tape 4. Your whole should at least be 2ft deep. When you have your desired depth you could start digging around your sample. 5. You sample should be in the shape of a cube whose sides are in the range of 3-4 in. 6. When you see that the top and sides of the sample have the appropriate size, pour wax to hold it together and to prevent disturbing the sample during extraction. two

3. When you start digging, one member of the group should also start melting the wax.

METHODOLOGY

1. Select an appropriate location for the soil extraction. Make sure the soil will not have a lot of roots, stones or sand. 2. Once youve chosen your location, mark the parameters of the whole you will be digging, it should approximately be 2ftx2ft.

7. To successfully extract the soil, use your small flat digging tool to slice through the bottom of your sample, you need to reduce the area in contact with the ground. After which you could use a trowel or any flat digging tool as a lever to release the soil from the ground. 8. Continue coating all the sides of the sample with wax.

9. To extract your second sample, dig least at 3 in deeper and repeat steps 5-8 and stor all samples in a safe place until it will be used in the laboratory.
