Modal verb is a verb which is used in combination with another verb that is
in infinitive without ‘zu’ in order to express wish, permission, ability,
probability, possibility,supposition,necessity.
In order word, every modal verb can be combined with any action infinitive
to form a modal verb phrase.
A modal verb phrase expresses action and the mood or attitude toward that
action.
Once modal verb is used, main verb goes to the end of the sentence. The main
verb remains in infinitive.
Ich fahre nach Pokhara. (Verb=fahren)

Conjugation of Modal verbs
In present tense change of stem vowels (Stammvokal) between singular and
plural, except in ‘sollen’, occurs.
In case of plural, stem vowels (Stammvokal) of the infinitive remain same.

In present tense 1st and 3rd person singular have same form and are without
ending like past form of irregular verbs.

In past tense suffix –te‐ is added and stem vowel (Stammvokal) of infinitive is

Madal verb main verb
‘können’ express:
a) Ability
Ich kann sehr gut Deutsch.
Here “können” is used as a main verb. Modal verb can be used
as a main verb, in that case modal verb take 2nd position and there
is no main verb at the end of the sentence. So, “können” is
‘Vollverb’.
Er kann gut Fußball spielen.
Sarita kann sehr gut Klavier spielen.
b) Possibility
Kannst du mich vom Flughafen abholen?
Hier kann man rauchen.

The kunjugativ (subjunctive ìì) form of mögen i.e. möchten , which express
wish, also use as a modal verb.
ich möchte

Modal verb “ möchten” follows the regular conjugation. There is no change in stem vowel.
“mögen”express:
a) Like and dislike
Ich mag mit dem neuen Kollegen nicht
zusammenarbeiten.
b) As a main verb (Vollverb)
Ich mag keinen Kaffee.
“möchten” ( would like to / to have a desire to)

The positive sentence can be changed into negative sentence with the use
of word “ nicht” infront of verb . In case of modal verb “ müssen” special
rule follows . negation of “ müssen” can be done with “ nicht brauchen +
zu+ infinitive form of verb”
