Why This section in English ???

This manual is written in Assamese and this section which deals with Assamese content
viewability of windows operating systems was also written is Assamese initially. Later, I
realized that if your computer is not configured to view Assamese content then you will
not be able to read anything on the manual. So, I decided to write this section in
English so that you can configure your PC to view Assamese content and also read
rest of the book comfortably.
Happy reading!!
How to configure your Windows PC:
The originally released copied of windows 2000 and XP were not compatible with
Unicode and hence cannot show Assamese content. But later on Microsoft released
some updates which solved the problem. In windows XP, service pack 2 and pack 3
does the work.
Windows vista and windows 7 are by default compatible to Unicode. So they dont
need any upgrade. Neither have they
needed any configuration in most cases.
Even though in some cases windows 7
may require some configurations, those are
just activations of languages and similar to
configuration of windows XP with service
pack 3.
Here, configuration of windows XP with
service pack 2 and 3 is shown below
with snapshots.

1) Go to, Start -> control panel and open

regional and language options.
2) There go to, language tab and click on the
Details button. You should see the window like
the one shown in the picture.
If not configured earlier it will show only English
language by default.
3) Now click on the Add button.

4) You should see the window as shown in

the next picture.
5) Here in the input language section from
the drop down you can select the required
lang
uag
e.

6) Select input language Bengali(India).

In windows 7 you may find Assamese.
Select that.

7) Now select keyboard layout/IME in the below section from the dropdown as
Bengali or Assamese(window 7) and press ok to close the Add input
language window.

8) Now in the previous window i.e. text

service and input language window, click
the language bar button at the bottom.
9) A different window, language bar
setting will open. The options of the
window

should

be

in

checked

or

unchecked condition as shown in the

picture.
Press ok and close both the windows.

All done. Your copy of windows XP should now be able to show Unicode fonts.
One more step: install required fonts:
Once all the above mentioned steps are followed, you should be able to view
Assamese content in your computer. But still there may be some problems. Still
sometime you may see unintelligible characters or lot of spelling mistakes. This kind of
problem occurs due to non availability of proper fonts in your computer. You have to
download the fonts from the internet and install it.
You can download few Assamese fonts from the below mentioned link:
http://salrc.uchicago.edu/resources/fonts/available/bengali/

But most importantly, dont forget to download the VRINDA font which is not available
for download at the above mentioned link. You can get it from here:
http://www.leisuretask.com/vrinda.ttf
Download and save it to your computer. Now copy the font file and paste it to Fonts
folder in control panel. Or can copy to the folder C:\WINDOWS\Fonts. Both are
same.
One most important thing: Go to the Fonts folder in control panel and delete the font
named ARIALUNI. Presence of this font may create problem in Assamese writing and
reading.
Now proceed to enjoy the manual in Assamese. You should be able to read it without
any problem. In case of any problem, you may drop me a mail at:
