Objective: Convert standard notation to scientific notation and vice versa (include
positive and negative exponents)

How are decimals related to scientific notation?

How are decimals changed to scientific notation?

What effect does a negative exponent have on writing a number in

scientific notation?
 What is exponential form?

What strategies are used to compare numbers in scientific notation?

Why are patterns important when investigating exponents?

Exponential Form (exponential notation) - a way to write an expression in

a more compact form.
If you have the same number multiplied by itself a number of times then using the
exponential notation you write the number and then an "exponent" to indicate how
many times you multiply the number by itself.
You want to multiply 8 by itself 4 times, so:

8x8x8x8=

7x7x7x7x7x7x7x7x7=

3x3x3x3=

1x1x1x1x1x1x1x1x1x1=

2x2x2x2x2x2x2=

scientific notation: a way to write numbers with many zeros a shorter way
using exponents.
Ex) 3,400,000 Steps
 1) Make number between1 and 10
(what are numbers less than 10?)
 2) Count spaces decimal moved
 3) Re-write number using tens and exponent
