Project Title & Description Zimbabwe We propose to work with the Zimbabwe Election Support Network - Zimbabwe's main civil society democracy coalition, bringing together 38 Zimbabwe NGOs - to build a network of local representatives from different civil society organisations. We will train thirty civil society 'facilitators' (two workshops), who will then train a further 300 local representatives (ten workshops). The training will be accomplished through workshops and the use of training manuals. The four key areas on which the training will focus will be: * organisation of local voter information and civic education campaigns; * use of media during and in relation to the electoral process and ways of influencing it to meet its responsibilities to the democratic process; * making objective and effective interventions in electoral disputes; and * participating effectively in domestic election observation. Democratic Dialogue for Strengthening Womens Political Participation Responding to one of the great challenges facing democracies in the 21st century, this project will work on political and social integration of women in Yemen over the course of a year. Building on the CoMs experience and ongoing activities in and around the region, this project will seek to build consensus and networks in support of womens political rights across a broad spectrum of political and civil society actors. Over the course of two years the ARWA Initiative will seek to measurably increase womens voting participation and candidacy in the 2011 Parliamentary elections and the 2011 Local Council elections in five governorates. Empowering Local CSOs in Yemen Through Participation in Local Governance The project was conceptualized to address the perennial problem of weak CSOs and the lack of collaboration between private and public development stakeholders. This initiative is aimed to improve the capacity and strengthen partnerships between CSOs and the government at the local and national levels to effectively address emergencies and respond to Local - Yemen (Governorates of humanitarian situations. Promoting active participation of civil society in environmental gover Vietnamese NGOs and community-based organizations (CBOs) came into existence in the 1990s, following the doi moi (reform) introduced by the Party Congress in 1986, and have grown significantly since then. Yet Vietnam is still characterized by a strong state and very weak civil society. What is striking is the almost complete absence of NGOs active in monitoring of laws and policies implementation, reporting violation and claim compensation for affected people. Without independent oversight and advocacy, environment is polluted, natural resources and biodiversity are degrading. Project Title & Description Media, Government and Civil Society Dialogue in Uzbekistan Uzbekistan maintains tight control of the media despite constitutional guarantees of press freedom. Prepublication press censorship was abolished in 2002, but self-censorship by the media is still widespread. The government does not communicate with the public on regular basis as it also lacks the required professional capacity to disseminate information in line with democratic standards and practices. RD proposes to implement a project improving the quality of interaction between Uzbek government institutions, public and media to foster democratization and intercultural dialogue. RD will encourage a dialogue with the objective to raise capacities of both media and government officials and civil society to enable provision of high quality and timely information to people. After training youth councillors on consultation techniques, DSW organizes forums. Project Title & Description Project The environment within which Legal Aid is provided in Rwanda is characterized by a high population density, with a large rural, semi-literate population. 56.9 % of the population or 5.4 million people live below the poverty line and only 62.5 % of rural men and women consider themselves literate. The 2008 Legal Aid Baseline Survey identified a number of key limiting factors in access to justice in Rwanda: - The limited number of lawyers and the limited geographic reach (urban bias) and capacity of legal aid service providers (both civil society organizations and the Bar Association / Corps of Judicial Defenders); and Limited awareness of available legal aid services amongst the population. This project aims to renew Local - Philippines media ethics & sense of responsibility, to increase public awareness on the right to information, improve investigative journalism, promote independent media & strengthen mass media-citizens relations to be better able to address governance issues & concerns. Following the 2006 CEDAW Concluding Comments to the 5th and 6th Philippines Periodic Report, the project will support partners in proposing to the government the institution of temporary special measures to catalyze Muslim and rural women's participation in local and national governance and to ensure gender-responsive planning, programming, budgeting and service delivery. The project will initiate a capacity building, advocacy and mentoring programme for Muslim women and rural women in fishing, farming and indigenous communities on the application of CEDAW principles in analyzing how their human rights are being violated and help them initiate dialogue with community leaders and government authority.
