IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Introduction (Day1)

As its your first day in our TSM School, please choose your seat and tighten your belt and be ready. Today we will introduce you to IBM Tivoli Storage Manager & its primary functions.

TSM is the primary backup & data management solution used into the enterprise today. TSM has a tough competition in the SMB mainly due to its cost, as its an enterprise solution. In the other hand, its a clear winner when it come to the enterprise for many reasons just summarizing few of them below:

1- TSM Can easily scale up to thousands of nodes without any problem. It has been designed with enterprise scalability in mind. Most other backup solutions fail to scale up after couple of hundreds of nodes, but with TSM scalability is a major advantage.

2- IBM Tivoli Storage manager support heterogeneous environment. It support so many platforms including (Mainframe (zOS & Linux), AIX, Linux, HP UX, Windows,.etc). It support way more operating systems & applications than any other backup solution in the market t oday.

3- TSM have many intelligent date movement and store techniques, that make building a hierarchical backup & a pyramid of muli-level storage a feasible task. Something which can be very difficult to achieve with other solutions.

4- Its an off-site backup ready, which can be used to build up a disaster recovery plan.

Plenty of other reasons are there, check out with your IBM Partner or IBM website to find out if TSM is the right solution for you. For now lets start diving into the product.

For Today We will Cover three Sections:

First Section: IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Components

Second Section: IBM TSM Functions & Capabilities

Third Section: TSM Licensing

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Components

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Components is the first section of three section of the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Introduction (Day1). In this section we will cover up IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Components.

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager have 9 Components. Six of these components reside on the TSM Server it self & another 3 are a part of the solution, but does not reside on the TSM Server. The first Six components in the list below are the TSM Components which reside on the TSM Server, where the last 3 components which has been colored in red are components which does not reside on the TSM Server.

TSM Components:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Administrative Interface Tivoli Storage Manager Server Scheduler Tivoli Storage Manager Database Tivoli Storage Manager Recovery Log Policy-Based Management Storage Pools Tape Library Backup-Archive Client (BA Client)

Now you at least know the name of the TSM Server components, you start to wonder what each of these components mean. Thats exactly what we will discover next. Below I will give a brief explanation of each of these components.

1- Administrative Interface:

Unlike many other backup software, TSM offers multiple management interfaces. Below is a brief of each

Administration Center GUI: It is the main GUI interface of TSM. It integrate into the Integrated Solutions Consonle. From it you can do most of the TSM tasks including Managing storage devices, Domain Policies, Schedules, users, and health monitor, and many more tasks. Its your full management through the GUI. If you are a GUI lover then this is the interface for you. TSM Server Command Line: Its the command line interface equivelant of the administration center. Its the most p owerfull TSM interface & a great interface for command line lovers. This interface is accessed by running dsmcadmc at the command line.

Backup-Archive Client GUI: it is the GUI interface used to run a manual backup or restore on a certain client, or to create a customized options for a certain client. Backup-Archive Client is installed and run on the client server not the TSM Server. It can be accessed by running dsm on Windows or by running dmsj on Unix. Web Client GUI: Well this is nothing more than a web interface access to the Backup-Archive Client GUI. It actually look exactly the same as the BackupArchive Client GUI, beside of being running in a web browser. BA Client Command Line: If you dont like the GUI & prefer command line then this is the interface to perform all the tasks managed by the BackupArchive Client GUI, though using command line. This can be accessed by running dsmc at the windows command line.

OK, these were the main management interfaces in TSM. Though I find it the norm for new commers who just started with TSM to confuse the interfaces command due to their similarity. So as my gift to my readers I will try to clear it early.

dsmadmc: is to call the TSM Server Command line. You will need this interface when you are planning to perform administration tasks on the TSM Server.

dsmc: to call the BA Client Command Line to perform tasks on the client server (the servers you want to backup).

dsm: to call the BA Client GUI. Again to perform tasks on the client server (the server you want to backup).

So dsm & dsmc is interfaces which manage tasks on the client (the server you want to backup) where dsmadmc is to manage tasks on the TSM Server. Please make sure to get this straighten up before proceeding as this will make your life a lot easier while switching between these interfaces in future chapters

2- Tivoli Storage Manager Server:

TSM Server main functionality is to move the backup & archive data from the BA Client to the storage media (Storage or Tape Library). TSM Server keep all of the users, administrators, policy management objects, & client nodes data into a special database. An important thing to note a common mistake that people reffer to the physical system running TSM Server as the TSM Server, but that is not correct. As TSM Server is actually only an instance of the TSM Server software running on that system. As you can run multiple instance of TSM Server on the same system.

3- Scheduler:

Tivoli Storage Manager offers an advanced scheduling capabilities for most of its tasks. This has been made possible by the scheduler part integrated into both the TSM Server & BA Client.

4- Tivoli Storage Manager Database:

TSM Keep up information of every file, raw logical volume, or database that it backup, archive, or migrate. The database of TSM is required for it to operate. A loss of database usually mean a full loss of backed up & archived data. So you better take a good care of your TSM Database, as its the the heart of your Tivoli Storage Manager.

5- Tivoli Storage Manager Recovery Log:

Just like any other database in the market today, TSM Database keeps track of each new transaction in its recovery logs. In case of suddent outage of the TSM server, recovery logs is the first resort to revert back changes & get the database back to an operational stage.

6- Policy-Based Management:

BA Clients is managed by the TSM Server by a centralized policies stored in the TSM Server Database. These policies all the administrator to meet business requirements by defining which files to backup & archive. The expiry of the files & how many copies to keep.

7- Storage Pools:

Storage Pools are collections of like media that provide storage for backup. TSM allow you to build a hierarchy of storage pools to where you send your backup, archive, and migrate data. You can automate the movement of data between different level of the storage pools hirarchy or establish a copy of them.

8- Tape Library:

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager support many tape libraries, which is usually the final destination of the backup. For a full list of the supported tape libraries check out TSM Supported Tape Libraries

9- Backup-Archive Client (BA Client):

The TSM Backup-Archive Clinet (BA Client) is a service that send & retrive data from the TSM Server. BA Client must be installed on every server to be backed up or archived by TSM.

IBM TSM Functionality & Capabilities

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager is a backup & archive solution, so if you are familiar with backup solutions you will discover that TSM will have to be capable of performing four main functions: backup, restore, archive, and retrive. Although these concepts seem easy to most, many new admins have a hard time distinguishing between backup & archive. As I am trying to cover every one, below you will find a brief of each as being defined by IBM Tivoli Team.

Backup: Creates a copy of a file to protect against the operational loss of destruction of that file. Customers control backups by defining the backup frequency and number of versions.

Restore: Placesbackup copies of files into a customer-designed system or workstation after the loss of a file. by default, the most recent version of each active file requested is replaced.

Archive: Create a copy of a file or set of files for vital record retention of data, such as patent information, financial information, or customer records. Customers control archive by defining the retention period. This feature enables customers to keep unlimited archive copies of a file.

Retrieve: Allows users to copy an archive file from the storage pool to the workstation. The Archive copy in the storage pool is not affected.

Basically the main difference between archive and backup, is backup meant for the situation where you loose the data and you need to recover. In the other hand, you require the archive to meet certain auditing requirement of keeping certain data for a certain period of time.

I hope that clear up the differences between backup & archive for all.

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager ISC & Administration Center requirements:

If you remember from day one Administration Center is a web-based interface that can be used to centrally configure and manage IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Servers. Its actually your main GUI interface to manage your TSM Server. Administration Center integrates into IBM Integrated Solutio n Console referred to it as ISC. ISC is an IBM Web sphere application which allows you to install and access components provided by multiple IBM applications. Hmmm, if ISC & Administration Center are still not clear to you dont worry it will get to be clear when you finish the installation of ISC & Administration Center and star t using them.

Ok, lets get back to the point. IBM Tivoli Storage Manager ISC & Administration requirements are often updated and can be found at IBM TSM Site Here. A list which was the most updated when this article was written is below, but always refer to IBM TSM site as pointed earlier for the most updated version.

Hardware

TSM Administration Center Version 5.5 The machine hosting the Administration Center and Integrated Solutions Console requires the following:

Disk space: To install the console on a system for the first time, the user needs 982 MB to satisfy the installation program disk space check and an addtional 300 MB of temporary space. To update an installation that already has Integrated Solutions Console (ISC) V6.0.1 installed from previous versions of the Administration Center, the user needs 400 MB of installation program disk space and 225 MB of temporary space. 500 MB for the completed installation Virtual memory/swap space: Equal to double the systems physical memory. At a minimum, this should be at least equal to the systems physical virtual memory.

Operating System

*See the table below for additional hardware and software requirements for your specific platform/operating systems. The machine hosting the administration center can be the same machine as the server if it meets the hardware/ software requirements and is running one of the operating systems shown in the table below.

Communication Protocol Network connectivity: To use the console across a network, the following items are required for the machine:

Network adapter and connection to a physical network that can carry IP packets. For example, Ethernet. Static IP address. Configured fully qualified host name. Integrated Solutions Console must be able to resolve an IP address from its fully qualified host name. To verify that the host name is configured correctly, the user can issue the ping command from a command line. An example command is:

Additional Software

ping hostname.yourco.com where, hostname.yourco.com, is the fully-qualified host name. The Tivoli Storage Manager Administration Center Web interface for the server and a Web client interface for client machines require a Java Swing-capable (at JRE 1.4.2) Web browser:

MS Internet Explorer 6.0, or later with Java Plug-in 1.4.2 Mozilla 1.6, or later

For platform and browser-specfic JRE notes, see the README file available with the product.

OK, I can hear you saying you want to get your hand dirty. Guess what!! You are ready to get them so dirty that you will need to wash them after Day 3. So head on to Day 3 to learn the installation process. Ah forgot to say, Day 3 will be posted very soon.

Installing IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (Day 3)

OK, I have been kicked right and lefts by the e-mails I got to continue my tutorial. In the next few days I will try to put as much of it out there. I had wrote many of the articles, but I had no time to post them lately being busy with IBM Tivoli FlashCopy Manager. Today, we will start with the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager installation. I will limit this day short to point out the two different parts of the installation & will post the actual installaiton of each part on Day 4, 5, & 6. Though I will try to upload these 4 Days of my tutorial all at once for you to enjoy it.

Although IBM Tivoli Storage Manager can be installed & used on multiple operating systems & platforms, in our course we will cover windows on Intel X86 only. Though most of the steps are the same or similar on the other platforms. Only the installation is a bit different between platforms, but the rest of the tasks are quite similar. The installation of IBM Tivoli Storage manager can be a straight forward if done in the correct order. Below is the correct order of the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager installation: 1- Install IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server: (Day 4) Install TSM Server Install TSM Server Licenses Install TSM Language Packs & TSM Device Driver Initialize TSM Server 2- Install IBM Integrated Solutions Console ISC & Administration Center (Day 5) 3- Install TSM Backup & Archive Client (Day 6)
If you dont remember any of the above components, please read its brief explanation on IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Components from Day 1, before clicking on the links above to head to the installation of that component.

Install IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server (Day 4 Part I)

Today, you will learn how to install IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server. You have two methods of getting the installation steps. Just watching the small video below after each section, or read the article below. Ah should I make this video training to be a paid one!!! Should it cost $$$$? Just a thought. As I am not paid to put this online & really its more of a time constrain, I was not able to add voice to these video or re-edit the videos & did not want to drag this tutorial further till I add voice to them. If you want to donate some of your time to do this, I can provide the video source. Note: unfortunately I did not have the original media of the IBM TSM 5.5 at the time I was writing this tutorial so I have downloaded the installers from the IBM website & put them in a folder called TSM_Images on my E drive. My installation will be done from there, though the same files are available on the media CDs provide by IBM. 1- Login to the TSM Server with an account with a local admin privileges. 2- Check out the Java version & make sure its compatible with the TSM version to be installed. Java 1.4.2 is recommended for TSM 5.5. The command to check the Java version is java -fullversion. If the version you have is not supported then go to sun.com and download the required Java version. 3- Double click on the IBM TSM 5.5 server setup file 4- Choose the installation language (English in our case) and then hit OK 5- Hit Install Product 6- Click TSM Server 7- If TSM prompt you to install MSXML 6.0 SP1 hit OK to all the installation to proceed. 8- On the welcome screen hit next 9- Accept the license agreement and then hit next 10- Fill the user name (Administrator in our case) & fill the organization name then hit next 11- On the setup type window choose complete then hit next 12- Hit install 13- Hit finish. Install TSM Server Licenses 1- After the installation of TSM Server the setup will return to the install product screen. Hit TSM Server Licenses 2- On the welcome screen hit next 3- Again fill the user name (Administrator) then click next 4- On the setup type screen choose complete then hit next 5- On the ready to install screen hit install

6- Hit finish. Install TSM Language Packs & TSM Device Driver: If you need a different language pack to be installed then when the install product screen come back again hit the TSM Language pack and follow the wizard. If you have a non IBM tape library then when the install product wizard return hit the TSM Device Drive & follow the wizard. These are not required for our labs & will be skipped. Reboot the system. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=v8uMeBGx2ZY Please head to the second part of Day 4 at: Initialize & Tune IBM Tivoli Storage Manager 5.5 on Windows (Day4 Part II)
