Join PTC in NYC this Spring

Penobscot Theatre Company is pleased to announce its fourth annual Weekend in New York City, March 21-23, 2014. The centerpiece of the travel package are tickets to two Broadway shows: BIG FISH, a new musical featuring direction and choreography by five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman (The Producers, The Scottsboro Boys); and the much-anticipated revival of A RAISIN IN THE SUN, starring Denzel Washington and Diahann Carroll. Travelers will enjoy round-trip deluxe motor coach transportation from Bangor; lodging at a Times Square hotel just steps from the theatre district; several specially planned meals; and access to behind-the-scenes experiences only Penobscot Theatre can provide. "Last year's travelers were among the first to see the spectacular Kinky Boots, winner of the 2013 Tony Award for best musical," said PTC board president Mary Budd. "We're looking to continue our streak of good picks with these exciting new productions." "Denzel needs no further elaboration, but I'm really excited about BIG FISH, too!" said PTC Artistic Director Bari Newport, who will help escort travelers to New York again this year. "I often talk about the theatre as a 'destination for imagination,' because here we fuel our imaginations and bring our imaginings to life. BIG FISH is all about imagination, and with the talent surrounding this show, I'm expecting BIG things!"

Welcome Annie Cambridge

(continued from page one) Entertainment, and Millennium Films. While in NYC, Cambridge was a volunteer with Learning Leaders, an organization dedicated to engaging families and communities to support student success. A graduate of The University of Maine, and a Bangor area native, Cambridge decided to return to her roots for the desirable quality of life. Upon her return to Bangor, Cambridge has become involved with Fusion, joining their kickball team, Unseamly Behavior, and she has enjoyed watching her alma mater, the UMaine Black Bears, play a great season at Morse Field. I am thrilled to return to Maine as part of the GBCVB team. Our region has so much to offer, and I am looking forward to being in a position where I can support our communitys passion and Greater Bangors future as it continues to grow.

The Details: The complete weekend package is available for $1,200 per person based on double-occupancy lodging ($1,350 for a single room, $1,100 for a triple, and $1,000 for a quad). To register or obtain more information, call the Box Office at (207) 942-3333. Space is limited.

We Need Your Input on Workforce Needs

Mobilize Eastern Maine, a regional network dedicated to growing our region's economy, wants to hear from you--our region's businesses--about your workforce needs. The link below will take you to a brief survey asking about your hiring needs now and what you anticipate those needs will be in the years to come. Your responses will help us shape new initiatives and aid our work with the schools, colleges and universities who are training tomorrow's workforce.

The Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestras (BSYO) will present their first concert of the 2013-14 season on Sunday, November 17 at 4 p.m. at Bangor High Schools Peakes Auditorium. The concert will feature performances by the Prelude String Orchestra, the Prelude Wind Ensemble, and the Philharmonic Orchestra, led by conductors Sascha Zaburdaeva and Trevor Marcho. Through a continuing partnership with BSYO season sponsor Dead River Company and the Good Shepherd Food-Bank, the concert will double as a food drive. Admission is free, but audience members are asked to bring donations of nonperishable food items. All donations will go to the Good Shepherd Food-Bank, which serves more than 100 local agencies in Penobscot County. The BSYO conductors, staff, musicians, and families are thrilled to be supporting the Good Shepherd Food-Bank again this year, said Bangor Symphony Orchestra executive director Brian Hinrichs. We are thankful to the Dead River Company for facilitating this partnership that allows us to give back while bringing the work of our young musicians to the community. Reflecting on Dead River Companys long tradition of supporting the Bangor Symphony Orchestra and Youth Orchestras, company president Robert Moore said, The arts make an immeasurable contribution to quality of life and Dead River believes in supporting organizations that have an educational component, such as the youth orchestras. Not only do the students learn music, they learn confidence and skills that will stay with them the rest of their lives. (continued on page four)

Rudman Winchell Employment Law News: Workplace

All employers, regardless of size, are required by state and/or federal law to maintain certain postings. Generally, the posters must be displayed conspicuously where they are easily visible to all employees and should be posted in all business locations. If an employer has employees who work away from the office, such as telecommuters, the employer is responsible for ensuring that those employees have access to the posters. The State of Maine requires, at a minimum, the following posters: Minimum Wage, Whistleblower Protection Act, Workers Compensation, Video Display Terminal, Child Labor, Regulation of Employment, Sexual Harassment, and Maine Employment Security Act. Federal law requires, at a minimum, the following posters: Equal Employment Opportunity is the Law, Fair Labor Standards Act- Federal Minimum Wage, Employee Polygraph Protection Act, Family and Medical Leave Act (for employers with 50 or more employees), You Have a Right to a Safe and Healthful Workplace, and Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights. Public workplaces have some additional posting requirements, such as the State Occupational Safety and Health Regulations poster. There are also optional posters available, such as the Maine Human Rights ActEqual Employment Rights, and Domestic Violence in the Workplace. There are other optional posters under both state and federal law. Copies of most of these posters are available from the state and federal Departments of Labor and most can be printed directly from their websites. The posters may be updated from time to time, so employers have to be vigilant about ensuring they are in compliance with the most recent postings at all times. There are many services employers can subscribe to for a fee that will send copies of the posters; employers who chose to use these services should ensure the posters include all of those required by both state and federal law and also ensure they are not posting laws that are inapplicable to their workplace (such as the FMLA if the employer is not subject to that Act). The following are a few additional reminders of some nuances about what has to be posted and where: Do the posters have to be accessible to applicants as well as employees? Several posters have to be posted in a place where they can be viewed by both employees AND applicants. These include the federal FMLA poster, the Equal Employment Opportunity poster, and the Employee Polygraph Protection Act poster. Can an employer maintain the posters online instead of in the workplace(s)? The federal DOL addresses this question on its website and says: please place a prominent notice on the website where the job postings are listed stating that Applicants have rights under Federal Employment Laws and link to all required posters. The site goes on to say Please note, however, that posting the notice on the employers website in this manner is not a substitute for posting these EEO posters in conspicuous places on the employers premises where otherwise required. So, the answer appears to be that employers should post at the actual worksite in addition to making them available on a website.

BSYO Concert & Food Drive (continued from page three) We are happy to support that. It all comes down to the company motto delivering on a promise. The November 17th concert will include works by Handel, Haydn, Schubert, Brahms, and more, showcasing the range and depth of talent across the BSYOs three ensembles and 84 current members. The concert begins at 4:00 p.m.; doors open at 3:30 p.m. Food donations will be accepted from patrons before entering the auditorium.

News from the Maine Film Office

Maine Film Office Updates its Online Production Guide to Better Showcase the States Film Production Talent
In a move to make Maine a more attractive and competitive state in which to shoot films, the Maine Film Office (MFO) has updated its online Production Guide to better showcase the depth of film production talent available locally to filmmakers. The interest in Maine as a filming location is high right now, said MFO Director Karen Carberry Warhola. The bottom lineand the issue central to updates weve made to the Production Guideis that if the producers dont know that talented crew members exist in Maine, theyre going to start looking at other states where they know local crew can be found. Manpower ranks as one of the top expenses in producing a film. Filmmakers and production companies use local talent as a means to keep costs down because associated costs, such as lodging, travel and per diem, are eliminated or reduced. But many companies will immediately take a state out of contention if they believe the talent pool and associated services are not deep, said Carberry Warhola. The Production Guide allows us to more effectively promote Maines talented crew members that are available to work on films, and to showcase a diverse variety of businesses that offer goods and services needed by productions filming in Maine, she said. The Production Guide is the primary resource for producers who are looking for information about shooting in Maine. Through the Production Guide, filmmakers have access to contact information for crewmembers that have created a listing in the guides database. Additionally, they can search by specialtylocation manager, prop maker, costume designer, electrician, etc.to find people available to fill open jobs on the production. All individuals and businesses that are available to support filmmaking in the state are encouraged to create a listing on the Production Guide. Everyones participation in the Production Guide matters, said Governor Paul R. LePage. It is important for the filmmaking industry in Maine to stand up and be counted so that Maine can get on the radar of producers scouting for filming locations in our state. The Production Guide also connects producers with businesses that provide goods and services they need. Hotels, restaurants, car rental facilities, office supply stores, caterers, furniture stores, and equipment rentals facilities are just a few of the support services that supply goods and services needed by film productions. By listing with Production Guide, local crew and support services can create and update their own profiles, describe their experience, list their credits, identify their associations, promote their own web sites, and upload a resume or company brochure. The Maine Film Office Production Guide can be found by visiting http://www.filminmaine.com and simply clicking Production Guide. The Maine Film Office is a division of the Maine Department of Economic and Community Developments Maine Office of Tourism. The film office helps bring film, television and other media projects to Maine; works to expand and improve Maines in-state production industry; and helps Maine made media productions succeed.

Maine Film Offices Website Now Features Tool Allowing the Public to Submit Location Photos and Information

Configured to match the Maine Film Office website branding, the LSE allows the public, including convention and visitor bureaus, chambers of commerce, homeowners and location scouts, to submit location photos and information online. This allows Maines stunning and extensive variety of locations to be available for research to the film industry online anytime and anywhere. We want producers to see that Maine offers every possible location they would ever need to shoot a film, television series, commercial or catalog, said Karen Carberry Warhola, Director of the Maine Film Office. Maine is a great place to film and its time every corner of this state is available for viewing online. The crowd sourcing model to build out the film offices location library is free for the public to use. Once an image and description is uploaded and approved, it will immediately be available for public searching. Maine is very competitive in terms of overall costs for producers and having a base of talented crew members, said Governor Paul R. LePage. But other states simply cannot compete with Maines natural beauty and limitless locations to shoot. All individuals and businesses that are available to support filmmaking in the state are encouraged to create a listing on the Production Guide.
