HarvestFest A Success
Te Victorian Hospital of Kaslo Auxiliary Society (VH-
KAS) staged their annual HarvestFest at the Kaslo Legion
on October 19. Students from JV Humphries School
were a great help in organizing the tables and chairs, and
preparing dessert toppings. Nearly all VHKAS members
contributed to the events success by manning the kitch-
en, running the craf table, bake table, and the extra fun
table, Lucky 7.
Te highlight of the afernoon was the Clothes Hang-
ers fashion show. Kate and her team showed everyone
how easy it is to be well dressed and stylin in comfortable
clothes. Te fashion show closed with a tempting array of
cosy nightwear for the coming winter.
Troughout the afernoon, door prizes were given out
and the lucky winner of the 50/50 was drawn. Te win-
ners of the silent auction were announced afer the fash-
ion show.
With the support of Kaslo residents, the VHKAS had
another successful event. Nearly $1,000 was raised to pro-
mote the health and well-being of the community.

HEALTH MATTERS
Victorian Community
Health Centre Update
After many months of renovation work, the
new entrance to the Health Centre will be
open on Tuesday, November 12 and we will no
longer have to enter through the emergency
department. An ofcial opening is planned for
December.
If you havent had your u shot yet, there
is a clinic planned for Tuesday November 12th
from 12:30- 2:00 at the Lardeau Valley Com-
munity Hall and Wednesday November 13th
from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at the Kaslo Primary
Health Centre.
Local Hospice Services
The Hospice Society of North Kootenay Lake
(HSNKL) provides hospice care in our area. Its
purpose is to assist our local medical services in
providing excellent care for persons approach-
ing death so that the burdens of suffering,
loneliness and grief are lessened. Support is
provided for clients and their families during
palliative care and grieving.
Hospice care encourages living fully to the
end of life, with dignity and comfort, surrounded
by a caring circle of support. Trained volunteers
offer hospital and home visits, respite time for
caregivers, companionship and conversation,
and emotional and spiritual support.
With attention to Canadas aging population,
the Canadian Medical Association has recently
stated their support for the implementation of
a national healthcare strategy for seniors. This
will include encouragement of nationwide use
of hospice care.
Advance Care Planning is a process of
reection and communication, a time to con-
sider personal values and wishes. An Advanced
Care Plan lets others know future health and
personal care preferences in the event that one
becomes incapable of consenting to or refusing
treatment. HSNKL is hosting a workshop in
Kaslo at the Seniors Hall on November 16 to
help the general public understand and develop
Advance Care Plans.
HSNKL is a community based, independent
non-prot society, operating with the support of
the New Horizons Program, contributions from
community members, Interior Health Authority,
and grants from RDCK, Victorian Hospital Aux-
iliary, The Community Fund of North Kootenay
Lake, and the Kaslo and District Community

How to Prevent the
Spread of Infections
As we move into the u and cold season wash-
ing your hands correctly is the best way to stop
the spread of infections. Eighty percent of com-
mon infections are spread by hands. Washing your
hands at least ve times a day has been shown
to signicantly decrease the frequency of colds,
inuenza (the u) and other infections. Not only
will it help keep you healthy, it will help prevent
the spread of infectious diseases to others.
Even if your hands appear to be clean, they
may carry germs. Hands pick up micro-organ-
isms (germs) in a number of ways. When people
who are sick sneeze or cough, the germs that
are making them sick are expelled into the air
in tiny droplets. If these droplets get onto your
hands, and then you touch your mouth, eyes or
nose without washing away the germs, you can
pick up the infection.
You can also get sick if you dont wash your
hands before and after preparing food, after
handling raw meat, and after using the toilet or
changing diapers.
Washing your hands not only prevents you
from getting sick, but it also reduces the risk of
infecting others. If you dont wash your hands
properly before coming into contact with others,
you can infect them with the germs on your
hands. Other people can also get sick from the
germs unwashed hands leave on shared objects
like doorknobs, keyboards, and other equipment
in the home or workplace.
What kind of soap to use
Use plain soap that does not contain antibac-
terial agents. Plain soap will remove the dirt and
grease that attract bad bacteria.
Plain soap will not kill the good bacteria that
live on the hands.
Using antibacterial products unnecessarily
increases the concentration of antibiotics in the
water supply and in the environment.
Here are further steps you can take
to protect yourself and your family:
When you cough or sneeze, use a tissue or
raise your arm up to your face and aim for your
sleeve (at the elbow). Do not sneeze into your
hand. Throw away tissues as soon as you use
them and then wash your hands.
Keep the surface areas in your home and ofce
free of germs by cleaning them. Doorknobs,
light switches, telephones, and keyboards are
especially important to keep clean.
If you have children, teach them good hygiene
and how to wash their hands properly. Young
children should be supervised while washing
their hands.
If you use bar soap, keep it in a self-draining
holder that can be cleaned thoroughly before a
new bar is added.
Use individual damp cloths to wash each
childs hands when a sink with warm running
water is unavailable.
Use fresh running water to rinse your hands
rather than using a standing basin of water.
Use individual hand towels and avoid sharing
towels.
Change cleaning cloths daily and launder them
using detergent. Germs thrive on moist surfaces.

La Vie Bohme
Elephant Mountain Music Teatre will present La Vie
Bohme, a concert performance of Puccinis La Bohme,
along with songs that celebrate the spirit that is La Vie
Bohme, at the Capitol Teatre on Wednesday, November
27th at 7:30. Te performance will feature well-known lo-
cal artists Julie Johnson-Murray, Christina Nolan, Kevin
Armstrong, Josh Murray and Michael Calladine, as well as
guest performers Isabelle Rozycki and Yves Tibault from
Montreal, and Andrey Andreychik from Vancouver.
Elephant Mountain Music Teatre is Nelsons newest
theatre company, founded by the same creative team that
brought Jesus Christ Superstar to the stage. Our local per-
formers have been seen in starring roles in JCS, Cabaret,
Khaos and others. Pianist Isabelle Rozycki is a concert
pianist from Montreal, and has studied piano performance
at McGill University, recently completing an artist diplo-
ma. She has also studied at the Bel Canto Institute in Italy,
studying both music and literature. Bass Yves Tibault
performs regularly with operetta companies throughout
Qubec, and baritone Andrey Andreychik has performed
with Vancouver Opera, Burnaby Lyric Opera, and many
other companies nationally and internationally.

Capitol Kids Series Engages Te Next
Generation Of Teatre Patrons
Kids and parents love the Capitol Kids series, and for
good reason. Te annual kid-centred series is as varied
and unique as it is fun, opening the world of performing
arts live theatre to Nelsons younger set.
Tis seasons extraordinary lineup kicks of with Duf e-
bag Teatres refreshing adaptation of Robin Hood an
unpredictable performance that promises to be a hilari-
ous experience for all ages and a truly unique interactive
theatrical experience where the dream of living a fairy tale
actually does come true! Tis is on Sunday, November 24.
Te series includes a return engagement with FIGURA
Teatre from Iceland. Bernard Ogrodnik, a Master Pup-
peteer for Icelands National Teatre was a hit with last
years audience, and Prokofevs score for Peter and the
Wolf will bring young audiences into deep connection
with the wonders of music on February 16.
Monster Teatre brings Mini-Masterpieces to the Cap-
itol stage. Miniature Masterpieces is a presentation of
three play adaptations of classics of childrens literature by
famous authors. Experience Lucy M. Montgomerys Anne
of Green Gables, recounting the adventures of Anne Shir-
ley, a young orphan girl mistakenly sent to Matthew and
Marilla Cuthbert, a middle-aged brother and sister who
have a farm on Prince Edward Island; Hans Christian An-
dersons famous Te Ugly Duckling a story of a duckling
who is diferent than all the others; and Tales from the
Greek Myths a collection of ancient stories with surpris-
ingly modern relevance to children and adults on March 2.
On March 30, closing the series, will be Alex Zerbe
with Family Friendly Action Comedy a dynamic array of
stunts, physical comedy and audience participation. What
we heard about Alex...you are so COOL Gabe, age 7.
As Capitol Kids performances enthral now, they build
the next generation of theatre-lovers, a Capitol Teatre
tradition that includes the annual Summer Youth Pro-
gram and Christmas Pantomime. In this iPod, iPad, video
game, facebook, myspace and Google world, the Capitol
Teatre ofers a family-centred respite full of inspiration
and creativity.
All Capitol Kids Series performances are Sundays at
2 pm and tickets are $12.50 or $40 for all four perform-
ances, available at capitoltheatre.bc.ca or by phone at 352-

Construction Has Begun
On Kaslos Emergency Services Building
In a ground-breaking ceremony held on Friday, Nov-
ember 1, the RDCK, the Village of Kaslo and the Kaslo
Fire Department celebrated the start of construction on
the new Kaslo Emergency Services Building.
Afer a decade of discussion I am really glad we have
broken ground on the new fre hall, said Andy Shadrack,
RDCK Director for Electoral Area D.
Tat sentiment is shared by Kaslo Mayor Greg Lay who
said: Lets git-r-done!
Te Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK)
awarded the contract for phase one of the project to EN-
CAN Construction of Kelowna. ENCANs construction
foreman, Greg Stone of Rossland, has contracted two lo-
cal heavy equipment contractors for excavation work and
has hired three local area carpenters. Mr. Stone said that
ENCAN will make every efort to hire local workers. He
also intends on purchasing much of the required building
supplies locally.
Te emergency services building will be constructed in
two phases. Phase one, which is forecast to be complete in
March 2014, will take the building to lock up (framing,
fooring, walls, roofng, piping, electrical service, and doors).
Te remainder of the project (phase two) will include
the installation of Gyprock, electrical, mechanical, plumb-
ing, heating, fnishing, air supply, furnishings, etc., with
each element being bid out separately and the works being
managed by a project superintendent hired by the RDCK.
Te RDCK is excited about this project and will keep
the public posted on its progress.
