FOREWORD

Since prehistoric .times, the use of herbs has long been the main source of healing for humankind. Much of the herbal traditions have been transmitted through the folklores of different cultures, the documentations in herbal compendiums, and the modem research of pharmaceutical science. The bulk of Chinese herbal medicine has been translated into English by Dan Bensky and Andrew Gamble in their voluminous work, Chinese Herbal Medicine Materia Medica. Bensky and Gamble's work, heralded as an excellent training text, continues today to be one of the main resources available in the West for anyone interested in learning about Chinese herbs. As with any textbook of this size, along with the time restraints placed upon the students by their teachers or themselves, the task of learning a great number of these herbs has been horrendous. In recognition of this concern, Mark and Marisa Saltzman have developed a study guide to assist the student in memorizing the pertinent information utilized in the Materia Medica. They have skillfully devised a system that allows the reader easier access to the herbs through the symbolism of numbers and letters. Rather than by just pointless memorization, readers are encouraged to learn the "license plates" of the herbs with a playful mind and imagination. Not only is the Study Guide good fun, but it is written in an easy-to-learn manner. Anyone who has labored in the field of learning Chinese herbs will realize the toil, patience, and responsibility required of the student. The authors have eased theitructure of such studies through these herbal "license plates." The guide is well-constucted, properly thought-out, and moves steadily through the different highways of Chinese herbalism.

I share the same concern with the authors that an in-depth understanding of Chinese herbal medicine can only stem from the actual practice of utilizing herbs and experiencing their dynamics. However, I do believe that any resource that can further a student's grasp of the Materia Medica should be welcomed. With the purpose of increasing proficiency in learning the written text, the authors have broadened the scope of learning. In that regard, this manual will continue to serve the student's initiation into the vast legacy of Chinese herbal medicine.

Given tPae weight and volme of the Materia Medics by Benslry and Gamble, the quesfion is "How m I ever going to learn all this?" The answer is practice. Practice in wing etne herbs, practice i n pronouncing the herbs and practice in telling stories &out ehe herbs. Seems like a lot of practice and maybe a lot of work too, but i n old world China many of the herbs in that redly 'BIG BOOK' were used in every day life. When k was summer t h e they h e w to eat cool fmds and in the winter they h e w to eat w fowls. These foods are the herbs in that 'BIG BOOK'. Tkis is a quick guide to the 'BIG BOOK9. You don't have to cmy the reference text around with you wherever you go, you can just cmy this study guide. P don't end buying this guide instead of the real reference text (tallere is quite a lot ahat is not covered here). But with this guide you of really vduablle infom;a&ion n every herb in the Mhteria Medics can get the basic ~ o m a & i oabout The beginning or expert herbalismehdogist can have a fast handle on all those herbs. The idea is simple. Each herb is given a license plate number that is coded to reflect the temperature, taste, md channels entered. Everything is presented in table fom for easy viewing and all the herbs md headings match u p with the SIE HERBAL MEDIC Materia Medica" by Bensky and Gamble. Here is a description of the format:

Temp - The k s t n m k r identifies the temperame of the herb. It is either 6-co019 $hot or N-neutral. There is only one &mpem$ure each herb. OpGoltll ]a - ';ppere are 3 properties that can k assigned to an herb and they are aromatic, astringent an$ pisonous. Aromatic is a '-' (Brono~~~lcd 'dash', but it sort of looks like an mow as i n mowmatic), ashgent is a '*' (Hpronouncd'star9 gent), and poisonous is a '!' (Bronounced 'bang' as in bang yom &ad if you eat t w much of this stuff). Only the '*' or the '-'will appear in the Option 1position. means that given a poisonous herb, I have decided to Jplace the '!' symbl at the end of the Plate# ( i n the position called Option 2). If the herb is not aromatic (PP ~h~?rhgent, then a space will appear in this position (i.e. 83 ELK).

Chamek Entered - This part of the Plate# is a fist of channels that the herb can appear here. All these entries are in capital enters. Any combination of le~ers letters. For a quick reference, the b n t and back cover show the letter correspondencesfor the "Channels Entered".

OpGoa 2 - At the end of the Plate# a 'f -willq p m i f the herb is pokonous.
