Number Problem
Problem Set 5.8 3. The product of two consecutive odd integers is 99. Find the two integers. Solution: Let x = first odd integer x + 2 = second odd integer x (x + 2) = 99 x + 2x = 99 x2 + 2x 99 = 0 (x + 11) (x 9) = 0 x + 11 = 0 x9=0 x = -11 x=9

Therefore if x = -11, x + 2 = -9 if x = 9, x + 2 = 11

Number Problem
Problem Set 5.8 9. One number is 2 more than 5 times another. Their product is 24. Find the numbers. Solution: Let x = first number 5x + 2 = second number x (5x + 2) = 24 5x2 + 2x = 24 5x2 + 2x 24 = 0 (5x + 12) (x 2) = 0 5x + 12 = 0, x2=0 x = -12/5 x=2

Therefore if x = -12/5, 5x + 2 = -10 if x = 2, 5x + 2 = 12

Geometry Problem
Problem Set 5.8 15. The height of a triangle is twice the base. The area is 9 square inches. Find the base. Solution: Let x = base 2x = height ()x (2x) = 9 x2 = 9 x2 9 = 0 (x + 3) (x 3) = 0

Area = base x height x + 3 = 0, x3=0 x = -3 x=3

Since -3 dimension is not realistic, then consider x = 3. Therefore, base x = 3 inches.

Geometry Problem
Problem Set 5.8 17. The hypotenuse of a right triangle is 10 inches. The lengths of the two legs are given by two consecutive even integers. Find the lengths of the two legs. Solution: Let x = first leg x + 2 = second leg

x2

+ = x2 + (x2 + 4x + 4) = 100 2x2 + 4x + 4 100 = 0 2x2 + 4x 96 = 0

(2x + 16) (x 6) = 0

(x+2)2

102

2x + 16 = 0, x = -8 x 6 = 0, x = 6 Since -8 length is not realistic, then consider x = 6. Therefore, 1st leg = 6 inches 2nd leg = 8 inches

Business Problem
Problem Set 5.8 21. A company can manufacture x hundred items for a total cost of C = 400 + 700x 100x2 . Find x if the total cost is $1,400. Solution: 1400 = 400 + 700x 100x2

100x2 700x 400 + 1400 = 0 100x2 700x + 1000 = 0 (x 200) (x 500) = 0 x 200 = 0, x = 200 items x 500 = 0 x = 500 items

Business Problem
Problem Set 5.8 25. A company that manufactures typewriter ribbons knows that the number of ribbons it can sell each week, x, is related to the price p per ribbon by the equation x = 1,200 100p. At what price should the company sell the ribbons if it wants the weekly revenue to be $3,200? (R = xp)

Solution: R = xp

3200 = (1200 100p)p 3200 = (1200p 100p2 100p2 1200p + 3200 = 0 100(p2 12p + 32) = 0 100 (p 4) (p 8) = 0

p 4 = 0, p = $4
p8=0

p = $8
