permanent resident, refugee or asylee who currently lives and studies outside the U.S. is considered a domestic applicant with foreign credentials. Regardless of residency status, if you are applying from a school abroad, you should follow the same procedures and timetables as applicants applying from schools located in the United States. International students who complete secondary school in the United States are generally expected to meet the same requirements as U.S. students. As an undergraduate, you may apply for admission as a freshman
(rst-year) or as a transfer student. You are a freshman applicant if you completed secondary school and have not enrolled at any college or university. You are a transfer applicant if you have successfully completed college level coursework amounting to 90-130 quarter (60-90 semester) units of credit and the lower-division courses required for your major course of study. You may not disregard your college record and apply as a freshman. Learn more about transfer at: http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/ prospect/Adm_tr/tradms.htm
ACADEMIC PREPARATION
To be considered for admission to UCLA as a freshman, international students must complete secondary school with a superior record in academic subjects and earn a certicate of completion, which enables the student to be admitted to a university in their home country. Applicants are expected to have completed the following minimum subject requirements: 2 years History/Social Science; 4 years of college-preparatory English (or language of instruction) that focuses on literature and extensive writing; 3 years of mathematics (4 years recommended); 2 years of laboratory science (3 years recommended); 2 years of Language other than Language of Instruction (3 years recommended); 1 year of Visual and Performing Arts (if available). We understand that UCLAs subject requirements may be dicult for some international applicants to meet due to dierences in national curriculums. All applications for admission are reviewed within the context of courses available to them; if a particular required subject is not available, we will consider your application without it. There is no single academic path we expect all students to follow, but the strongest applicants take the most rigorous secondary school curriculum available to them. Please feel free to contact our Oce of Undergraduate Admissions if you have any questions about the subject requirements.
TESTING REQUIREMENT
All freshman applicants are expected to take the following tests: The ACT Assessment plus Writing Test - or The SAT Reasoning Test Note: UCLA will use the highest composite score (critical reading + mathematics + writing) from a single test administration. Applicants to the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science are strongly encouraged to take the following SAT Subject Tests: Math Level 2 and a science test (Biology E/M, Chemistry, or Physics) that is closely related to the applicant's intended major. In order for your test scores to be available in time for our review, all tests must be taken by December of the senior year. All scores should be sent directly to the UCLA admissions oce through the testing agency. UCLAs ACT number is 0448; our College Board (SAT) number is 4837. English language prociency is critical to your success at UCLA. Applicants whose rst language and language of instruction is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS). *UCLA requires that all international students on non-immigrant visas have adequate medical insurance during all periods of enrollment. More information about this requirement will be sent to students when they are admitted. Funding an education as an international student at a university in the United States can be challenging. International students are not eligible for university, state, or federal nancial aid. The regulations of the United States Department of Immigration require that persons entering this country on a student visa demonstrate that they have available to them sucient funds to support their living and education expenses. We urge international students to research scholarship opportunities from UCLA as well as from private organizations both within the U.S. and in your home country. As a suggestion to get started, consider your background, your future or current eld of study, and possible career paths. Use these topics to search for organizations that may have some connection to your interests and background, then apply for available grants and scholarships. For information about searching for UCLA scholarships for rst-year students and other outside scholarships, please review our Scholarship Resource Center website at: http://www.ugeducation.ucla.edu/src/Scholarship_Search.html In addition, we suggest the following internet scholarship search sites: http://www.iefa.org/search/ http://www.internationalscholarships.com http://www.internationalstudent.com/scholarships/search We hope these free scholarship search options and others that you may identify will be helpful in augmenting your resources.
