Network Protocol are needed because the message or data send by our network have to reached on destination through different networks of different structure and different platform. so network protocols are performing to duty to make our sended data compatible to that new networks, which come in the way to destination. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Why_network_protocol_needed 4. a. In mesh topology, the failure of even a single link does not incapacitate the entire system. Each connection can carry its own data load. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/The_consequences_if_a_connection_fails_Five_devices_arranged_in_a_mesh_ topology a. With the Mesh, the consequence of failure can't be generalized, too much redundancy. You'd need to look at each connection. b. If just a connection to one unit, the other units aren't affected. But the Star has a central hub, if it fails the network fails. c. It depends where on the bus the connection fails. If just the branch tied at the point, just that branch fails. If the cable itself, everything past that point fails, and maybe the whole system. d. The failure of a single node of the Ring network can cause the entire network to fail. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100423053745AA70SHJ

2. Factors that determine whether a communication system is a lan or wan? In: Computer Networking, Local Area Network [Edit categories] Answer: The main difference between LAN, MAN and WAN is the scope and coverage of the networks. LAN (Local area network) is usually used to connect computers in smaller distances such as in a building or in offices. They use various topologies such as bus topology, ring topology, star typology etc to connect the computers and share information only among the computers connected in LAN. A Metropolitan Network covers larger coverage than LAN and is usually used for connecting a city rather than single organization. A Wide Area Network is collection of networks or many LANS. The perfect example of WAN is internet which connects thousands and millions of networks. Another factor which distinguishes between LAN, MAN and WAN is that LAN and MAN are owned by certain entities such as government, educational institutions or organizations whereas WAN (i.e. Internet) is not owned by anyone.

I don't like to think of LANs and WANs in terms of distance. I think of them more in terms of the equipment used. When you're using routers and switches and other networking equipment that you own, its your LAN. You manage it, you're in control of it, you fix it when it breaks. A WAN on the other hand, means you're using someone else's equipment, like an ISP. Your ISP manages the WAN, they control it, they fix it when it breaks. You don't have access to the routers and switches and other equipment on a WAN.

These Small sizes networks are categorized to LAN. Ethernet is a LAN. All small sized office networks and in-house networks are LANs. MAN owned by single company, it's averagely large network. Participate Level2 (eg: Switches) networking devices. (Level 3 also can contain). A Man is a Metropolitan Area Network - that connects together all machines in an enterprise, campus or town. A WAN is a Wide Area Network that typically connects machines that are geographically remote. WAN interconnect several sub networks together. It's a large network. Usually Network resources are owned by several companies. Heavily consist with Level 3 networking devices (eg: Routers). Expand to large geometric areas. http://amitcomputerknowledge.blogspot.com/2012/04/you-have-two-computers-connected-by.html The network you are describing only connects two local devices using a Level 1 device (Ethernet hub). A Level 1 device is the simplest type of networking equipment, providing only the most basic networking connectivity - a physical connection without any traffic management or routing. The network you describe would therefore be defined as a Local Area Network (LAN). http://www.blurtit.com/q784119.html 6. It is true that performance is inversely proportional to delay. Sending an email is more sensitive to delay than copying a file and surfingthe internet.Because Emailing may be interrupted due to high latency, but can always assume as soon as the server is performing again, without user interaction. Surfing the web is not so much affected by delay because due to effect of latency on surfing the net. Copying a file is less sensitive to delay than surfing the web and sending an e-mail. http://www.blurtit.com/q8489118.html 1. The number of links required for any of the following topologies depends on how many computers will be using the system. Let's just say, in this instance, there are four computers using the system. The number of cablelinks required for a mesh topology is 6, a ring topology is 4, a bus topology is 3, and a star topology is 4.

Mesh Topology

This network connection allows all the computers to be linked to theinternet. This specific topology uses the most cables, however it is thesystem that is less likely to fail or experience any faults. Due

to the fact thatthe computers have about 3 cables running out of them, if a failure does occur in one cable, it won't completely lose the network.

Ring Topology

The ring topology is self-explanatory in the sense that the cables are managed in a ring shape. The cables connect to each computer which allows the signals to go through each device. It is not likely that it will obtain any problems during its function. However, if there are any problems withthe cables then the whole system will go down and no computers will be able to connect to the network.

Bus topology

With the bus topology, information sent through is not renewed or resent from device to device. Due to this, the computers are safe from crashing down if one of the network fails. However, a problem with this is that when there is an issue with the cables, it cannot be easily identified.

Star topology

This is the only system that uses a central hub to connect to all thecomputers. The cables provided will travel from each computer to the hub and the network will be powered from the central device. http://www.blurtit.com/q1075524.html For n devices in a network, what is the number of cable links required for a mesh, ring, bus, and star topology? Ans: n(n-1)/2 cable link are required for mesh, n for ring, n-1 cable link for bus, and n cable link for star topology. http://solutioninblog.blogspot.com/ What are some of the factors that determine whether a communication system is a LAN or WAN? Ans: Size and Coverage of area determine whether a communication system is LAN or WAN. A LAN normally covers an area less than 2 mile, a WAN can be worldwide. . Why are protocols needed? Ans: In computer networks, communication occurs between entities in different systems. An entity is anything capable of sending or receiving information. However, two entities can not simply send bit streams to each other and expect to be understood. For communication to occur, the entities must agree on a protocol.
