2.3

DEPLOYMENT AND USAGE The SMA1K is designed to complement the existing Siemens Families of SDH Multiplexer Products and to offer the existing and new customers the benefits of latest technology developments translated into simpler and more compact (smaller) thus more cost-effective product. Some of the envisaged deployment types for the SMA1K are indicated in the text below. 2.3.1 Core Network Deployment Due to its application versatility the SMA1K is well suited to applications in the lower speed core transport networks. Typical SDH Multiplexer Applications like Add-Drop Multiplexer (ADM) or Terminal Multiplexer (TM) are both supported thus providing the operator with the flexibility to build ring or chain types of transport structures. Considering the compatibility with existing Series 1 and 2 Families of Siemens SDH Multiplexers it is perfectly suited for expansion of the existing installed base or network growth under the common network management platform. By deploying it in the Core Network the Network Operators can take full advantage of the increased simplicity and significant savings in the floor space offered by the SMA1K. 2.3.2 Edge Network Deployment With its extremely compact design the SMA1K is particularly well suited to customer premises deployment. It can be easily located at the customer premises providing WAN access for a variety of other type of traditional customer premises equipment like PBX, Routers, LAN switches, Primary Rate Multiplexers or TV Codecs for transmission of TV Signals over digital transport networks. In addition, the SMA1K can be used by network operators as POP (point-of-presence) to link separate parts of corporate networks or provide access for corporate networks to public networks. The SMA1K can also be used as transport multiplexer in remote modules of the EWSD switching system or as a transport platform for the forthcoming ATM Access Switches located at customer premises.

Figure 4: SMA1K System Concept Block Diagram At the heart of the SMA1K is the state-of-the-art ITRACHIP ASIC which provides all of the switching and synchronisation functions. It allows cross-connections to be made between the line and the tributary side and in addition, in the add-drop applications, between the two available line sides. The main card provides on-board tributary access for 21x2 Mbit/s data signals. In addition, provisions have been made for optional plug-in daughter boards that can increase the tributary access for additional 42x2Mbit/s or 1x34Mbit/s tributary ports. Separate on-board circuitry is used to provide the Optical Line Interface, BW7R Interface and access to external V.11 compliant 64 kbit/s Data Channel. The EOW function is realised by an optional plug-in daughter board. Block diagram of a SMA1K in a protected Terminal Multiplexer or Add-Drop Application is shown in figure 5 below.

available (Freerunning mode of operation). In protected configuration all of the functions of the ITRACHIP ASICs are synchronized. The on-board System Controller provides interfaces for local and/or remote management and carries out all of the SEMF and MCF functions. It supports both, F-Interface for local management (LCT) and Q-Interface for remote management (TransCommander). In protected applications the System Controller located on the Worker Card manages both, Worker and Protection Cards. Note: Due to the power requirements of the AUI interface (Q-Interface) and limited space available on the Main Card, the circuitry feeding the AUI interface is located on the EOW daughter board. This means that whenever a NE is to be used as a GNE, an EOW daughter board has to be inserted. The design of the orderable items (Building Blocks) makes allowance for this specific requirement. The Power Supply of the cards is realised using on-board power supply circuitry that is connected to the station power supply system via duplicated power feeds. 3.2 EQUIPMENT MODULARITY The SMA1K consist of a core unit to which additional units can be added depending on the customer application. Table 1, below, depicts the units available with the SMA1K. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
4.1 SDH BACKGROUND The SMA1K supports the multiplexing structure of G.709 and can be used in SDH networks based on ITU-T Recommendations G.707 to G.709. The Multiplexing Structure defines the way in which signals are structured within the STM-1 frame, terminated by the SMA1K, as shown on Figure 8, below.

Mapping

Figure 8: SMA1K Multiplexing Structure for STM-1 Aggregate Signals For example, a 2 Mbit/s tributary signal is mapped into a C-12 container and Path Overhead (POH) information is added to form a Virtual Container, VC-12. The POH allows the operator to monitor the end-to-end path quality through the network. The SMA1K also supports virtual containers for bit rates of 34 Mbit/s (VC-3). A pointer is added to each virtual container to adapt signals between different timing clocks used within the network. The VC and associated pointer combination are called Tributary Units (TU). Multiple Tributary Units are multiplexed to form Tributary Unit Groups (TUGs) as shown in Figure 8 above . Seven TUG-2s or a single TU-3 are combined to form a TUG-3, which is then multiplexed into a higher order Virtual Container, a VC-4. The VC-4 has an alignment pointer added to it to produce an Administrative Unit (AU-4). Section Overhead (SOH) bytes are then added to complete the STM-1 signal.

SMA1K TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

4.2

EQUIPMENT ARCHITECTURE In the transmit directions the signals from the tributary side are routed via the interface circuitry where they are terminated and presented to the ITRACHIP ASIC. There they are assembled into an aggregate STM-1 line signal. The ITRACHIP ASIC inserts the Section Overhead and retimes the data at the system clock. The signal is passed to the Optical Interface circuitry where the electrical format is converted to light and transmitted over the optical fibre bearer. In the receive direction the reverse process takes place. Section Overhead bytes accommodate the control and management transport function associated with the transmission of the SDH payload. These include frame alignment bytes, error monitoring data, data communications channels and auxiliary channels. In addition to the ability to add/drop traffic from the STM-1 bearer the SMA1K has the capability for through traffic connectivity. The number of tributary access ports available is dependent on the mix of interfaces equipped. The SMA1K supports the following combinations of tributary traffic access ports: Number of Ports 21x2Mbit/s 63x2Mbit/s 21x2Mbit/s + 1x34Mbit/s Physical Location on-board 21 on-board + 42 on a daughter board 21x2Mbit/s on-board + 1x34Mbit/s on a daughter board

4.3

CROSS-CONNECTIONS The SMA1K supports cross-connections at VC-12 and VC-3 level only. The following type of cross-connections are supported: Line to Line Line to Trib

4.4

SMA1K MANAGEMENT The SMA1K can be managed by the operator either from a local or remote management system, Local Craft Terminal and TransCommander (EM-OS), respectively. In addition, Network Craft Terminal type management is also supported. The following management functions are supported: Configuration Fault Performance Maintenance Security

This is made possible by the on-board System Controller which is located on the Worker Card. The System Controller supports and carries out all of the relevant SEMF and MCF functions.

SMA1K TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

If two cards are used in protected Terminal MUX applications or when he SMA1K is used as an Add/Drop Multiplexer then both cards, (the Worker and the Protection) are managed by the System Controller located on the Worker Card. 4.4.1 Local Management An RS232 (F) interface is provided for direct connection of the Local Craft Terminal which is IBM compatible Personal Computer. The Local Craft Terminal is a Windows NT based application for keyboard and mouse operation. The operator access is password protected to ensure that the SMA1K database is not accessed/altered by unauthorised users. The minimum recommended hardware platform is as follows: IBM compatible Personal Computer 486 or better processor running at 133 MHz+ 16+ Mbytes of RAM 3.5 inch high density floppy disk drive Serial port for connection to the SMA1K Parallel port for a printer (optional) VGA (or better) colour monitor Microsoft Windows NT application

If supplied by Siemens, the LCT is most likely to exceed the above requirements. 4.4.2 Remote Management A Qx interface (Ethernet) is provided for remote management of the SMA1K. The remote management can be either by a Network Craft Terminal or a TransCommander (EM-OS) and is realised by using the DCCm communication channels between the "Gateway" SMA1K (the NE connected to the NCT/TransCommander via Ethernet link) and the other NEs that belong to the same sub-network, as shown on Figure 9, below. IS-IS routing mechanism is used to provide DCC channel protection from network interruptions. The Local Craft Terminal hardware platform (Personal Computer) with addition of an Ethernet compatible modem is used as a Network Craft Terminal by using the appropriate Network Software Application. The TransCommander is a powerful software system running on a HP UNIX workstation. More information on the TransCommander can be found in its own product description document.

TIMING AND SYNCHRONISATION The SMA1K is able to synchronise its internal system clock and all output interfaces from a variety of timing sources. All synchronisation functions are realised by the MTS functional block that is part of the ITRACHIP ASIC. Three modes of operation are supported, Freerun, Normal and Holdover. In Freerun mode the internal clock and the STM-1 outputs are synchronised to a high quality VCXO oscillator that meets the requirements of the ITU-T Recommendation G.813 (frequency stability better than + 4,6 ppm). In Normal Mode any or all of the following may be selected and prioritised as the synchronisation source: Incoming STM-1 Signal Timing Reference T1, maximum 2 sources can be selected. Selected 2 Mbit/s Tributary Port Timing Reference T2, maximum 2 out of the available 63x2 Mbit/s tributary signals can be selected. External 2048 KHz signal Timing Reference T3/T4, one input and one output interface is available. Should all the timing sources used under Normal Mode fail the SMA1K will go into Holdover Mode. In this mode the synchronisation is provided using the last known acceptable timing source. When a selected timing source fails the next available priority is automatically selected without any effect on the existing traffic connections. When the original source is restored the consequent action depends on whether the operator has configured Revertive or Nonrevertive operation. In Revertive mode each timing sink will always choose the higher priority timing source when it becomes available, after an operator configurable Wait-ToRestore time period. In Non-revertive mode the higher priority source will not be selected after re-establishment until the currently selected source fails. The equipment also supports the ITU-T defined Synchronisation Source Marker Byte (SSMB) function which allows the quality of the selected source to be transmitted within an STM-N signal. STM-N timing sources may be rejected on receipt of an SSMB timing marker reporting poor timing quality.

PROTECTION MECHANISMS SMA1K features extensive protection schemes for both traffic and equipment protection: Traffic Protection Multiplex Section Protection (MSP) Sub Network Connection Protection (SNC/P) Drop and Continue/Dual Homing Equipment Protection Tributary Protection, 2M, 34M MTS Function Protection (Synchronisation) Switching Network Protection Optical Interfaces Protection (combined with MSP) Power Supply Protection All of the above protection functions are implemented by the 1*1 card protection of the main card. All of the protection mechanisms can be configured as autonomous, manual, revertive or non-revertive. In the Autonomous Mode the SMA1K takes action to rectify a traffic affecting defect by invoking a protection mechanism without operator intervention. In the Manual Mode the protection mechanism is invoked by the operator via the management interface (local or remote). In Revertive Mode the original condition is reselected when its quality has been restored to normal working. In Non-Revertive Mode the new condition will continue to be used even if the original condition has been restored to normal working. 4.6.1 Multiplex Section Protection (MSP) The MSP type implemented in the SMA1K is a single ended linear MSP that combines Card Protection. Due to the ultra compact design (maximum of two cards per system) the MSP protection method can only be used in the Terminal Multiplexer Applications. When MSP is used, both cards, Worker and Protection, receive both incoming STM-1 signals. Each card is responsible for its respective outgoing STM-1 line signal. In the normal operation the Worker Card monitors both incoming multiplex sections and feeds the working STM-1 traffic to the tributary interfaces. When disturbance is detected in any of the incoming STM-1 signals then the alternative incoming STM-1 signal is selected. In case of a Worker Card failure the Protection Card is enabled to feed the incoming STM-1 traffic to the tributary side. In addition to the traffic the MSOH bytes DCCm, E2, NU98, NU99, RES62 and RES63 are also protected with the linear MSP. The MSP can be configured to be automatic, manual, revertive or non-revertive.

SMA1K TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

4.6.2 Sub-Network Connection Protection (SNC/P) This protection mechanism is applicable to ring configurations and is available for VC12 and VC-3 levels. At the transmit end the TU traffic from a single tributary port is presented to both, East and West Line Cards to provide transmission in both directions around the ring. At the receiving end a selection is made for one of the two available signals coming from the two separate lines. Any line or tributary port can be selected as a source or destination. The SNC/P can be configured to be automatic or manual. 4.6.3 Card Protection In general, this method can only be used in conjunction with the other protection mechanisms described above (SNC/P or MSP). If a total Worker Card failure occurs then the Protection Card is capable of maintaining error free all of the existing traffic connection. The Power Supply and MTS circuitry functions are protected as part of the Card Protection mechanism. If any of them fail on the Worker Card , then all of the functions are taken over to be handled by the Protection Card. After Card Protection has taken place the management access via F/Q interface is possible if the System Controller (SC) circuitry located on the Worker Card is still active i.e. if the Worker Card failure did not affect the System Controller circuitry. In the cases where total Worker Card failure occurs including the SC then all of the traffic functions would be taken over by the Protection Card. At this point, although the existing traffic would not be affected (after a short switchover period), the management of the SMA1K would be interrupted. The removal of the faulty Worker Card (where the SC is located) will not affect the existing traffic as it is handled by the Protection Card. When the replacement Worker Card is inserted the new SC would first upload all of the configuration data from a non-volatile memory bank located on the subrack backplane. After successful completion of the configuration upload the SC becomes functional, the Worker Card would be ready to handle the traffic again and the management function would be re-established.

FAULT MANAGEMENT A comprehensive Fault Management function supervising the correct function of all of hardware and software modules within the network element as well as monitoring the integrity of all incoming data signals is deployed in the SMA1K. The following tasks are carried out by the Fault Management function: To detect anomalies and to report some of them to the performance management function. To derive defects by eliminating spurious anomalies and to report some of them to the performance management function. To trigger automatic maintenance actions such as ALS, protection switching, AIS insertion, far end defect indications etc... To process operator controlled maintenance actions. To perform alarm reduction through correlation of defects. To assign severity levels to alarm events (static table is used for the BW7R alarms). To time stamp alarm events using the system real time clock. To issue spontaneous alarm event notifications to the local/remote management systems. To report alarms to the local alarm system. To indicate fault state of replaceable units. To store alarm events in historical event log and the alarm status in a current problem list. To support fault location for diagnostic purposes and to assist in maintenance.

4.8

PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT In addition to the Fault Management function described above a Performance Management function is also implemented in the SMA1K. The following functions are carried out as part of the Performance Management function: Performance monitoring (PM) Inquiry of current PM values Inquiry of the previous PM values Threshold crossing notification (TCN) TCN event reporting Inquiry of the currently raised TCN states The following performance entities are monitored: Erred seconds (ES) Severely erred seconds (SES) Unavailable time (UAT) Background block errors (BBE) The values of the above performance entities are counted for 15 min/24 hour time periods and stored in performance logs. Up to sixteen 15 min. performance reports and up to two 24 hour performance reports can be stored and retrieved.
