TEXT: Ecology

Jill Bates is an environmentalist. She is being interviewed by Ken Pryde, a journalist.

-

Ken: So tell me, Jill, what would the Green Party do if it won the elections?

Jill: First, wed stop factories from discharging poisonous chemicals into rivers. Wed also take actions
against farmers who pollute rivers with their fertilizers.

Ken: What else would you do?

Jill: Wed take measures to control carbon dioxide emissions. For example, if people used unleaded
petrol in their cars, the air would be a lot cleaner. Do you realize that the carbon dioxide from our cars is
damaging the ozone layer?

Ken: Is the ozone layer really such a problem?

Jill: Of course it is! Havent you heard of global warming?

Ken: You mean, the idea that the planet is getting hotter and hotter?

Jill: Yes. The Polar Regions consist of millions of tons of ice. Some scientists say that if temperatures
continue to rise, the ice in the Polar Regions will melt.

Ken: So what? We live in London. We wouldnt have to worry, would we?

Jill: Wrong! If the ice melted, the sea level would rise and thered be terrible floods all over the world.

Ken: Are you saying that London would be completely flooded?

Jill: Exactly! Thats why we must act now. Think global and act local!

Ken: Thank you, Jill, and good luck for the elections.
