Report disasters
Rains and wind cause havoc
The Limpopo Provincial Disaster Management Centre has received preliminary assessment reports of strong winds and heavy rains in the four District Municipalities of Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune and Vhembe. This is due to incidents that occurred on the nights of 30 and 31 October. In Mopani District 134 families were affected in sixteen villages of Greater Giyani and Greater Tzaneen combined. There were eight villages (Guwela, Gawula, Vuhehli, Xitlakati, Matsotsosela, Khashani, Mbawula and Phalaubeni) affected in Greater Giyani alone while eight villages were affected in Greater Tzaneen. The villages affected in Greater Tzaneen are Mawa Block 8, Lekgwareng, Mokhwathi, Mandhlakazi, Mariveni and Leretseng. To date five tents and eight food parcels were provided to affected families at Guwela village. Vhembe District recorded 458 households affected in Makhado, Mutale and Thulamela by the recent strong winds and heavy rain. The Capricorn District has reported 40 households, three schools and a nurses home were affected in the Blouberg Local Municipality. Sekhukhune District has 293 affected households that occurred in Makhuduthamaga, Fetakgomo, Greater Tubatse and Elias Motsoaledi municipalities. Fetakgomo has provided four emergency tents and mattresses to affected families, while Makhuduthamaga has provided one tent, three temporary shelters, fourteen blankets and sponges to all affected villages within its locality. GoGHSTA stressed that the Departments statement is issued based on preliminary reports received. Some affected households have recovered from these incidents. All affected districts are working around the clock to ensure that final reports are submitted to CoGHSTA via the Provincial Disaster Management Centre for consolidation for submission to MEC Ishmael Kgetjepe. As per Disaster Management Act 57 of 2002, municipalities are required to report any incident that occurs in their area to the Provincial Disaster Management Centre. The MEC for CoGHSTA, Mr Ishmael Kgetjepe called on members of the community to be vigilant and contact the Provincial Disaster Management Centre on this toll free number 0800 222 111 to report incidents of disaster. Kgetjepe encouraged parents and guardians to warn children not to cross or play near rivers for their safety.

We are in a democracy and supposed to have water, but we do not have, says Mrs Thabita Mnisi of Extension 10 in Burgersfort. This is not the first time. We struggle. I had to buy water I was supposed to have. Water, toilets and service delivery in general are problems we experience every day. Nobody tells us anything and we do not know when it will become better. We are struggling.... See inside on page 2 and 3 the problems residents experience and the reasons why.

The questions we asked

Sir
Water supply in certain areas of Burgersfort had been and still is intermittent to say the least. Areas such as Extension 5 has for example experienced water supply cuts in certain instances for more than 24 hours at a time, on other days water supply for three to four hours, and on certain occasions water has been cut for the whole night. This has been going on for the past three weeks. Water users, who most of them incidentally pay their water use bills, received no notice about this situation and the water cuts. Businesses and residences suffer. The call centre, when they answer the phone, give explanations that differ from day to day. One reason supplied is that water from the river is dirty and cannot be purified fast enough. The other is that a pipe is giving a problem and they are working on it, or residents are using too much water during a hot day and even that the problem is located in your erf, because there is water supply (even when your neighbours also do not have water). Residents in the old part of town think they are discriminated against because all the mine properties and grand houses have water. Why are they victimised? they ask. They are fed up with not knowing what is going on and when the situation will be normalised. Platinum Gazette newspaper of which undersigned is the editor, is doing an article about the situation and will be delighted to be enlightened by Lepelle Northern Water. We understand that technical difficulties may be more likely the reason for cutting the water supply rather than blatant discrimination and the newspaper will be more than glad to convey it to readers. We will also be more than glad to convey to our readers why you chose not to communicate anything to them, and why your call centre is all but useless when water users communicate with you. Should undersigned be under the wrong impression, please supply the correct information and answers to questions in this email by 08:00 on Thursday 07 November 2013.

Entrepreneurs do well at Joshua Generation

There is more to being an entrepreneur than buying something for R1 and selling it for R2
Joshua Generation had an entrepreneurs day for the Level 2 learners of the school on 25 October. The school tries to instill in the children an entrepreneurial spirit and teach them that there is more to being an entrepreneur than buying something for R1 and selling it for R2. There was a jumping castle and a water-balloon toss. There was also a learner with a camera that took photos and printed them there and then. The stalls were neat and decorated with flowers all in an effort to attract buyers. All enjoyed the day. The school wants to thank all the parents who assisted and supported their children. Success stories

Community Companies being developed

Company Name: Matimatjiatji Mampudima Community Companies are a Section 21 company representing the seven villages that surround Modikwa Platinum Mine. Started at Modikwa: Theyve been working with Modikwa since Modikwa started operating in the area more than 10 years ago. What does the company do? It focusses on the development of the villages surrounding Modikwa Platinum Mine. These villages are: Matimatjatjie, Mamphahlane, Mpuru, Diphale, Suwe, Sehlaku and Maroga Villages. Things like water supply, electricity, roads, tribal offices, schools, employment from the villages, learnerships and bursaries are all part of what the company try to improve. Mr Strydom Makofane and Ms Nomsa Nkosi says: We look after development companies. Entrepreneurs who would like to do business with Modikwa Mine must make sure that they register on the vendor database and attend site meetings when required. It is also important that they put in the tenders or quotations as required because some people think that attending the meetings is enough. Remember everything is possible. You can be assisted through our Section 21 company and the mines SED department. Challenges: Community members dont understand the process to get a contract or work at the mine. Perhaps they need some training in that. Some expect the mine to just give them work without them even tendering. Many of the communities also focus on Modikwa and forget that there are many other mines and large companies around. The little that Modikwa have cannot be enough for everyone. They must also remember that when Modikwa calls entrepreneurs to attend Entrepreneur Development Workshops to go and familiarise themselves with the processes for tendering etc. Achievements: The biggest achievement is that we as a Section 21 company now have development companies and theyve employed 246 people from the start of Modikwas operations until now. We were able to sustain them. Through the SED department we were also able to build a sewing factory which is now training 15 learners. In January 2014 it will officially open and start supplying overalls to mines in the area. We also build a bakery which is operational and is supplying bread to the seven communities. This created 12 permanent job opportunities. Two community halls were build at Mamphahlane and at Maroga. At Mamphahlane the hall is divided and from January next year it will serve as an educentre where learners in our communities will find additional resources such as mini library and computer centre to assist them with their studies. At Maroga the hall is utilised for training and tribal related matters. The future: We want to live up to the founding mandate of the Section 21 company. That is to make profit through development companies and declare dividends to the seven communities we serve. We are now on track to in future do that. In the future we would also like to see our Section 21 company building a Technical school from our profits. Well call it Mampudima Matimatjatji Technical School. To Modikwa: Modikwas learnerships and bursaries helped a lot. Many people in our area are now educated because of Modikwa. Out of Modikwas approximate 5000 employees about 3600 are from surrounding villages. We also appreciate the fact that African Rainbow Minerals section of the joint venture at Modikwa has supplied the seven kgoshis in our villages with transport. Theyve also recently adopted the Local Procurement Policy and are already implementing it. They are really trying to live up to their promises. Contact them: 082 601 8845 (Nomsa Nkosi) or email: nkosinomsa79@gmail.com

Ms Nomsa Nkosi from the Section 21 Company Matimatjiatji Mampudima Community Companies.

Perseverance is the key to their success

Company Name: Leko Mining Started at Modikwa: In 2006 but during the World Economic Melt Down things were scaled back and we did not have work. We started working at Modikwa a second time last year August. What does the company do? Vamping and sweeping. This means that when the big rocks have been removed we collect all the finer material that was left behind. There is a lot of platinum in that fine material. Mr Simon Kgoete says: A business is not something you just talk about. You may think business but as long as you dont do it, it is not a business and will never be. You must offer something that people need. You also need to be consistent. Challenges: Leko Mining is a joint venture company. When we first started partnered companies were Imphquko and African Mining. After three months the partners started pulling out saying that they are not making money. In this way we had more than one joint venture until the group we are today was formed.Money was always a challenge, but through the assistance of Mr Gary Strong we formed a business plan and approached new possible partners to help with funding. Achievements: We are proud of the perserverance we showed. Perhaps one day we will also be seen as business people of this area. We have created jobs for our local people. We employ approximately 200 people at the moment and that is the greatest feeling. Weve assisted to minimise the number of jobless people in the area. Many families are living because of Leko. The future: We want to see ourselves doing mining as well, not only vamping. We are getting mining exposure and it would be great if in the end we could be a mining company. To Modikwa and about Modikwa: Modikwa has played a vital role. From the beginning Modikwa trained a lot of local people and employed them. The economy in Limpopo improved because of Modikwa and other mining houses around here. Because of them Burgersfort is also growing. Now at month-end you must park your car and go on foot because it is too congested. Modikwa has done their part. We wish Modikwa all the best because then they will be able continue to assist communities near them. Contact them: 082 878 8399

Local people show they can

Company Name: Insanita (Pty) Ltd Started at Modikwa: The company is a joint venture between Motlokwa and Leahlaba Construction. Motlokwa currently has 60% and Leahlaba 40%. The joint venture started their contract at the beginning of August 2013. What does the company do? We do material handling at Modikwa. The company is doing well. This is the first big project for Insanita (Pty) Ltd. Mr Strydom Makofane from Insanita (Pty) Ltd says: We want other entrepreneurs out there to know that they can make it. Just look at us, weve made it. Challenges: So far weve been lucky to not have any serious challenges. We were lucky to have the financial and technical capacity to carry out the projects entrusted to us. Other achievements: We are amongst the first to have a company consisting solely out of locals doing work at Modikwa Platinum Mine and we are very proud of that. The future: We hope to after 3 years scale down on the joint venture and take over from Leahlaba as a stand alone company. We are planning to be the new Murray & Roberts or Frazer Alexander or Stocks & Steffanuti in 10 years time. To Modikwa: Modikwa is really keeping their promises. We appreciate the opportunity to work at Modikwa and for their assistance through their resources. Thank you to Mr Bob van Rhyn and the Business Leader Mr Mokgosi Nkoana. To the community: Local companies must keep on tendering. Perservere. The Local Procurement Policy is there to assist. The community must use the channels that are provided. Make use of the Section 21 companies, put in tenders and stay away from disruptive behaviour that will not benefit anyone. Contact them: 073 689 0062 (Strydom Makofane) or e-mail: nkgelepengmakofane@gmail.com

Mr Simon Kgoete is very optimistic about the future.

Traffic nightmare continues

This photograph was submitted by a reader who was stuck in the chaotic traffic at the Eland Street/Dirk Winterbach crossing last week Friday. Drivers simply created their own new lanes to push foward into the traffic that was already at a very slow pace due to congestion. The only option for drivers scared of damage to their vehicles is to give way. No traffic officers were in the vacinity to try and restore order as peak traffic hit town.

Disabled or just disrespectful?

This photograph was taken last week Thursday when a motorist hogged the disabled parking space at a filling station. The driver (who was seemingly perfectly healthy) sat in the vehicle while having a lengthy conversation with friends through his window.

SPORT
With less than a month left in its 2014 entry process, the iconic Comrades Marathon has already amassed nearly 14000 entries. International participants from as far afield as Egypt, China, Canada and India as well as a host of European countries will represent more than 60 nations in The Ultimate Human Race, come Sunday, 1 June 2014. The three-month long entry process for the 89th edition of South Africas most famous road-running race opened on 1 September and will close at the end of November 2013 or as soon as the entry cap of 18,000 has been reached. The entry barometer currently stands at 13900 and is steadily rising. Entry is open to all athletes, be they novices or veteran Comrades Marathon runners. Qualifying for the 2014 Comrades Marathon is applicable as of 2 June 2013 until 5 May 2014. Runners have been urged to take careful note of the entry criteria. For more details, please visit the official Comrades Marathon website: www.comrades.com The CMA has urged all aspirant Comrades Marathon runners who have not yet entered the 2014 running of the Comrades Marathon, to enter soon to secure a space in next years down-run, starting outside the Pietermaritzburg City Hall. CMA Race Director Johan Van Staden says: The attraction of the Comrades Marathon to ultra-runners across South Africa and all parts of the world has meant that our entries are being taken up very quickly. At the rate at which entries are coming in, we anticipate that the cap of 18000 will be reached well before 30 November. No extensions will be granted. Van Staden adds: We warmly welcome all of our international participants but greatly value our local Comrades Marathon runners who have made the race the epic event that it is today. With little more than 4000 spaces left before the close of the entry process, we urge our regular runners to enter as soon as possible so as not to be left disappointed.
