General Requirements
Read the FYP Study Guide Read and understand the Instructions for Writing and Formatting the Thesis Read and understand the Report Writing Style Guide for Engineering Students (RWGfES), 4th Edition

Formatting & Structuring


Preliminary pages: Title page, Abstract, Disclaimer, Acknowledgement, TOC, List of Figures, List of Tables, and List of Symbols / Abbreviations (if applicable) Body of thesis: Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Subsequent chapters, Last chapter, Reference List, and Appendices Text of each chapter: Introduction, Main body with headings and subheadings, Conclusion/Summary Each chapter begins on a new page Use 12 pt Times New Roman for the text Use 1.5 spacing with a blank line between paragraphs Figures, tables, and their captions are centred Formats of headings and subheadings, follow the instructions of Section 2.3.3, RWGfES Page numbers are centred at the bottom of pages Headings and / or Sub headings do not start at the bottom of the page stand-alone

Presentation & Communication


Use British/Australian English, not American English. No informal language (i.e. SMS language) Proofread before submission Abbreviations are defined first time when used All figures and tables are mentioned and explained in the text No short paragraphs (e.g. one sentence paragraph) Avoid using long sentences Avoid first-person pronouns (e.g. I or We) Avoid starting a paragraph with a figure, a table, or dot points No page ends with heading

Referencing
Use Harvard system (author-date) for referencing (follow the instructions of Section 4.2, RWGfES) Statements and definitions are referenced, if they are not your original work Figures and tables are referenced, if they are not your original work

Title Page, Abstract, Disclaimer


Title page included Abstract is no more than one page Abstract describes up-to-date Background, Problems, Aims, Tools, and Outcomes of the project Disclaimer signed

Table of Contents
List all up-to-date headings and subheadings of chapters with corresponding page numbers Subheadings are indented Different fonts for different levels of headings At each level of headings, fonts used are consistent List of Figures List of Tables

Chapter 1
Reason for the project, background and overview of company and project Project aims and expected outcomes are adequately stated (i.e. not described with only one sentence or in dot points) Titles and order of chapters are listed and explained

Chapter 2
Information you need for doing the project is identified Carried out a search for the information using databases and other resources It contains references All the references included are reviewed (i.e. described, explained, or discussed) with proper referencing How the project will be carried out and the tools/resources needed are stated Project plan is described Project methodology is described

Other Chapters
Current situation and problems of the system are analysed Design/implementation criteria are identified Design/solution alternatives are identified and explained Preferred solution or design is recommended based on an appropriate decision-making process Implementation of proposed solution and result validation are presented

Last Chapter
Summary of the project and achievements Limitations of the current project Recommendations for future work

Reference List & Appendices


All references are listed in a correct style, following the instructions of Section 4.1, RWGfES All references listed are cited in the thesis Project Diary is included Up-to-date Industry Supervisor Reports are included Appendices are referred to in the thesis
