Mattias Celaya Gr.10 LAB REPORT GUIDELINES REACTION RATE.

10/21/2013 Mrs. De Beer

AIM: Write a full sentence explaining the purpose of the experiment. o The aim of this experiment is to see how surface area affects reaction rates. Hypothesis: formulate a testable hypothesis and explain using scientific reasoning. o Thiago and I expected the smaller pieces of zinc (the ones with more surface area) to have a faster reaction rate because there was more zinc for the HCl to collide with at any one point in time. Variables: List the dependent variable, independent variables and all factors that you keep constant o Dependent variables Temperature HCl concentration Surface area of zinc o Independent Variables Size of the test tube o Factor kept constant Amount of HCl poured in to the test tubes The weight of Zinc put into the test tube The amount of time the reactions had to take place in. Materials: Make a detailed numbered list of absolutely everything that you used. o o o o o o o 2 droppers 2 test tubes Zinc metal bits/ powder Solid zinc metal Scale HCl 2 stop watches

Procedure: Construct a detailed numbered list, and write a clear, logical method, mentioning all of the relevant variables involved and how to control and manipulate them. 1. In one test tube put a 24 grams of solid Zinc metal 2. Pour two dropperfulls of HCL in the test tube 3. Start timing how long the reaction takes from the time you start pouring the HCl and stop as soon as it looks like all the zinc has reacted. 4. Put 24 grams of powdered zinc metal or small zinc pieces into test tube two.

5. Pour two dropperfulls of HCl into it 6. Start the stop watch time it from when you start pouring HCl, 7. Stir test tube two because powdered zinc metal is harder to see than zinc metal. 8. Results: Collect sufficient relevant data (more than one trial run!) and record it in a suitable format. The table must have UNITS and a SUITABLE HEADING EXPLAINING EXACTLY WHAT THE TABLE IS ABOUT. You can transform and present the data in a graph. Remember to label axes, using units and to NAME the graph, with a DESCRIPTIVE HEADING.

o Reaction rate lab. How Surface area affects the rate of the reaction.
Test tube 1 (Solid piece of zinc metal) Reaction time start 5 min. The zinc immediately starts fizzing with the HCl. The zinc reacting strongly with HCl no signs of slowing. Producing gas in the form of bubbles The Zinc HCl reaction is slowing down. The reaction is finished. Very little fizzing and no more bubbles Test tube 2 (Powdered/pieces of zinc metal) The zinc slowly starts to fizzle. Starting to react more vigorously. The inside of the test tube is hard to see.* for the zinc powder.* The zinc is beginning to show produce gas visibly in the form of bubbles. The zinc is finally reacting strongly fizzing and producing bubbles.

10 min.

13 min. Class ends

Discussion: Describe any trends in other words, explain the results using words. Discuss the reliability of the data in other words should you have done more trials? How reliable is your data? o The results from this experiment are not reliable because they contradict regular science. The powdered and zinc pieces should have reacted quicker than the solid zinc metal. Instead the zinc metal reacted much quicker than the smaller pieces and powder. To make the test more reliable we should have conducted more experiments with different weights of zinc. We could also have tried different concentrations of HCl on the zinc.

Conclusion: Comment on the validity of the hypothesis based on the outcome of the investigation. Use NUMBERS from the table TO SUPPORT YOUR HYPOTHESIS. Suggest realistic improvements to the method: what can we do in OUR lab to improve THIS EXPERIMENT. Make suggestions for FURTHER INQUIRY what else can we do in OUR lab other experiments that tests reaction rate? Using other chemicals? o According to the experiment the hypothesis that the more surface area the faster the reaction would happen was wrong. The larger piece of zinc reacted faster than the smaller pieces with larger surface area. Next time we do a lab on reaction rates we should make the concentration of HCl fixed along with the temperature. We should also attempt more reactions to see if the results are always the same. We also will try other chemicals such as Iron and Oxygen which are slow reactions.
