Dire(t+

This game is optimised for Microsoft's DirectX 8.1. In order for you to play the game, you m"st ha,e DirectX 8.1 compliant drivers for your video card and sound card. Please note that although DirectX 8.1 is installed !ith the game, your video and sound card drivers !ill not "e upgraded to DirectX 8.1 drivers. You will need to obtain the latest DirectX 8.1 drivers from your card manufacturer or C supplier. !hese drivers cannot be supplied by "idos. The file securom#v$#%%.dat !ill "e created, during the installation&'aunching of Championship Manager 5, !ithin your ()pplication Data( folder. It is necessary for Championship Manager 5 to run properly. The file contains your licences for all products !hich are *ecu+,M protected, therefore it !ill not "e deleted automatically. Please do not delete the file "ecause you might lose essential digital rights. The information contained in securom#v$#%%.dat !ill not "e transferred to any other computer !ithout your permission.

This security system is connected !ith a M* 2indo!s *ervice called 3*ecu+,M 4ser )ccess *ervice3. This module is started automatically !hen launching Championship Manager 5 if the user is logged in !ith 2indo!s administrator rights. In case users do not have administrator rights !e recommend to 5eep it running.

Memor* an$ Performan(e

2hile the game !ill run fine in -6. M" of +)M, your playing e7perience !ill "e smoother if you have at least 61M". +egardless of ho! much memory you have, you can ma7imi8e your availa"le memory and increase the overall performance of the game engine "y doing the follo!ing1

9losing any open !indo!s *hutting do!n all other programs, including menu "ar programs li5e I9: Defragmenting your hard drive
;idos recommends that you have no other programs running at all !hile playing Championship Manager 5. ,ther programs, including virus chec5ers, system utilities and screen savers can cause system degradation !hen playing games soft!are and may conflict !ith the game for system resources, potentially resulting in insta"ility and crashes.

!hen running the game on your secondary monitor. To ensure you receive ma7imum performance please run the game on your main monitor. Do not run other programs !hen playing 9hampionship Manager 6. This could seriously affect the performance of your P9. Do not loc5 your P9 !hen starting up 9M6. Preparing !o"r 5ar$ Dri,e To ensure that your installation is trou"le free, you should chec5 to see that your hard drive and file system are "oth tuned for optimum performance. 2indo!s comes !ith t!o utility programs that find and fi7 any errors and optimise your hard drive performance. The first of these programs is called s(an$is7. *candis5 !ill chec5 your hard drive for pro"lems and can fi7 any that it finds. Iou can run scandis5 "y clic5ing on the #tart "utton from the 2indo!s Tas5"ar, follo!ed "y Programs, then A((essories, then #*stem ools, and finally s(an$is7. ,nce scandis5 has finished running, you should ne7t optimise your hard drive's performance "y running a program called Dis7 Defragmenter.. Iou can run Dis5 Defragmenter "y clic5ing on the #tart "utton from the 2indo!s des5top, follo!ed "y Programs, then A((essories, then #*stem ools, and finally Dis7 Defragmenter.

'nstalling Championship Manager 5 Installing 9hampionship Manager 6 is easy. *imply insert the 9D into your 9D +,M drive. )fter a fe! seconds, the 6a"n(h Panel !ill appear. This program !ill guide you through the remaining process via onscreen prompts. If at any time you are instructed to restart your computer, do so.

In the event the 'aunch Panel does not appear !hen you insert the 9D1 Dou"le clic5 on the M* Comp"ter icon, then dou"le clic5 on the CD/R1M icon, and lastly dou"le clic5 on the #et"p.e8e file to "ring up the 'aunch Panel ,+1

9lic5 on the #tart "utton. 9hoose )un from the pop up menu. Type $:9set"p in the "o7 provided B!here $: designates your 9D +,M drive letterC. 9lic5 on the 1% "utton to "egin the install program.

Iou !ill "e prompted to select the path and directory to !hich you !ish to install the game on your hard drive. The default is C:9Program :iles9Championship Manager 5 Iou may change this if you !ish to. )t some point, the Microsoft Dire(t+ 8.1 install prompt !ill appear if you do not have it on your system already. Please read the on screen information "efore selecting an option. Iou may either choose to install or not install at this time. If the Championship Manager 5 installer detects an active version of DirectX 8.1 on your system, !e encourage you to not reinstall DirectX. If the installer does not detect DirectX 8.1, you must install it "efore you are a"le to play Championship Manager 5 Bplease refer to the ne7t section of this guide "efore proceedingC.

#tarting/6oa$ing he 3ame ,nce the install has finished and you have opted to run the game, the *aunch anel !ill appear on the screen. ) list "o7 allo!s you to choose !hich graphics card !ill "e used "y DirectX to render Championship Manager 5. The option you choose !ill stay selected every time you run the game. ,nce you are happy !ith your choices, simply clic5 on the R"n "utton to start the game. Iou may also1

If you are going to play the game at a later time insert the 9D into the 9D +,M drive. )fter a fe! seconds, the Championship Manager 5 'aunch panel should appear on the screen via the )utoPlay feature. Jo! clic5 on the R"n "utton to start the game. There is also a "utton present to E8it. In the event the )utoPlay feature does not !or5, you may clic5 on the M* Comp"ter icon and then clic5 on the CD/R1M icon to "ring up the 'aunch Panel. 1R

9lic5 on the #tart "utton. 9hoose Programs from the pop up menu. Drag your mouse to the right and clic5 on Championship Manager 5 from the list. 9lic5 on Championship Manager 5 from the ensuing pop up menu.

4ninstalling Championship Manager 5 If you need to 4JIJ*T)'' Championship Manager 5, you may do any of the follo!ing three things1 Insert the Championship Manager 5 9D into the 9D +,M drive to activate the )utoPlay feature. This !ill "ring up the 'aunch Panel. 9lic5 on the 4ninstall "utton, then clic5 on the !es "utton from the ensuing pop up panel to uninstall the program 1R

9lic5 on the #tart "utton. 9hoose Programs from the pop up menu. Drag your mouse to the right and clic5 on Championship Manager 5 from the list. 9lic5 on +ninstall%hield from the ensuing pop up menu and follo! the onscreen instructions.

CD/R1M Pro)lems

Championship Manager 5 reAuires at least a :uad *peed 9D +,M drive !ith F- "it ,indows drivers. ' re(ei,e a ;888888.888 not fo"n$; error message &hen installing or r"nning Championship Manager 5 This error message is usually the result of your computer using M* D,* B1. "itC drivers instead of 2indo!s BF"itC drivers for your 9D +,M drive. Iou can easily chec5 to see if this is causing pro"lems "y opening the Control Panel Beither clic5 on the M* Comp"ter icon or clic5 on the #tart "utton follo!ed "y #ettings, then Control PanelC. In the 9ontrol Panel !indo!, dou"le clic5 on the #*stem icon then clic5 on the Performan(e ta". Iou should no! see a summary of the performance status of your computer. ,ne of the lines should say K -ile %ystem. /01bit2 and the last line should say 3Your system is configured for optimal performance.3 If you see a message saying 3Drive X is using M%1D4% compatibility mode'3 then you !ill need to contact your system vendor to o"tain and install F- "it drivers for your 9D +,M drive.

A"toPla* 'ss"es <h* $oesn=t the A"toPla* feat"re (ome "p &hen ' insert the Championship Manager 5 CD into the CD/ R1M $ri,e> This is usually a configuration issue. There are many different !ays to ena"le the )utoPlay functions of 2indo!s. The standard method is descri"ed "elo!1 1C ;nter the Control Panel from the des5top "y clic5ing on the #tart "utton, follo!ed "y #ettings, and then Control Panel.

-C Dou"le clic5 the icon la"elled #*stem, usually located alpha"etically to!ards the "ottom of the Control anel !indo!, to "ring up the #*stem Properties panel. FC 9lic5 on the ta" at the top la"elled De,i(e Manager and !hen the ne! panel appears, locate the section la"elled CD/R1M and clic5 the Pl"s ?@A sign in front of it. 5&f there is a minus sign in front' don6t clic7 it.C /C Jo! dou"le clic5 the 9D +,M drive revealed and the CD/R1M Properties panel !ill appear. 6C 9lic5 on the #ettings ta" at the top. .C To!ards the middle of the panel, you should see a fe! chec5"o7es !ithin the 1ptions section. )t the "ottom of that section, you should see a chec5"o7 la"elled A"to insert notifi(ation. $C Ma5e sure there is a chec5 mar5 in the "o7 provided and clic5 on the ,G "utton to complete the process.

'f the game A"to Pla*s m"ltiple times: *ome 9D +,M drives cause Championship Manager 5 to )utoPlay multiple times, !hich also may result in lac5 of control !ithin the game. To remedy this pro"lem clic5 on the 9D +,M properties in the *ystem Properties panel and under settings turn off )uto Jotification.

Crashes an$ 6o(7/4ps

<hen ' start Championship Manager 5B m* mo"se ("rsor $isappears an$ m* (omp"ter lo(7s/"p. 9hances are your installed audio card drivers are not compati"le !ith DirectX. The only solution is to get a DirectX 8.1 compati"le driver from your audio card manufacturer.

<hen ' start Championship Manager 5B ' re(ei,e the follo&ing error message: 3!he application Championship Manager 5.e8e referenced memory at address 8888.8888 that can6t be read from.3 9hances are your installed video card drivers are not compati"le !ith DirectX. The only solution is to get a DirectX 8.1 compati"le driver from your video card manufacturer.

Iou may have run out of free space on your hard drive. Please remove un!anted programs to free up

additional space for the game, and then reinstall Championship Manager 5. Liles are possi"ly "eing copied to a corrupted area of your hard drive. If this is so, you'll need to run the s(an$is7 program and ma5e sure to use the horo"gh option Bsee previousC. )fter scandis5 has finished running and has informed you that your drive is free of errors, try to re install. There may "e dirt or fingerprints on the 9D +,M disc itself. ;7amine the "ottom of the disc? if you see any fingerprints or dirt, carefully clean the disc using a clean, soft, lint free cloth "y !iping from the centre of the disc Bnear the holeC to!ards the outer edge in a straight line.

Championship Manager 5 is (rashing to the $es7top &ith no error messages. This pro"lem can "e caused "y several different things. >ere's a list of the most common culprits associated !ith these crashes1

Ma5e sure the 9D +,M is clean Bchec5 for "oth scratches and smudges on the reading surface of the
9DC.

Ma5e sure the game has "een installed properly. Ma5e sure DirectX 8.1 has "een installed properly. Ma5e sure you have the latest drivers for your video card and that they are DirectX 8.1 compati"le. Ma5e sure you have the latest drivers for your sound card and that they are DirectX 8.1 compati"le. Ma5e sure Virt"al Memor* is ena"led on your system.

Try uninstalling and then reinstalling the game. Try e7iting the game, re"ooting your machine, and re entering the game.

Note: !hat if your system crashes to the des7top while playing Championship Manager 5' you should probably reboot your computer before starting a new play session. 4therwise' DirectDraw or Direct%ound may be in a loc7ed state' and the game will be unable to use your sound or video hardware.
