Kimberly Cole, 6A Caribbean Studies 2A Ethical issues in sexual and reproductive health Literature review Four articles that

discussed the ethical issues about reproductive health, specifically contraception were found and used as back ground information. Lee Rainwater did a study on how defining factors affected the planning of various American families. Rainwater, in one chapter of the book, discusses the different views of Planned Parenthood and contraception with people of varying socioeconomic and religious background, using interviews. The author kept the identities of the correspondents secret and used a large sample. This source was helpful as it provided ideas for possible question to pose and responses to anticipate in the current study, provided that interviews are conducted or questionnaires are issued. In 2010 William Saletan wrote an online article about The Popes opinions of the use of contraception. This article sought to discuss the views of the Catholic Church on contraception and the author agrees to some extent with the position of Pope Benedict however he disagrees in terms of why people use contraception generally. This is a good source as the author makes reference to authority, quoting interviews about contraception with Pope Benedict and Pope Paul. There is some bias that his language indicates as it shows some air of sarcasm towards the views of the Pope. This article helped me put in perspective the impact of religion on ethics and how great a role it might play in the study. Matthew Cook wrote about religion, ethics and contraception in 2011. This article also discussed the ethical issues that Catholics have with contraception but also makes reference to Buddhism and the issue of a female pharmacist of undisclosed religion who refused to sell prescription contraceptive pills. The article is well written as it makes reference to authorities like the Pope and there are facts and statistics from other reliable sources like WHO and CNN. This article was also beneficial because it contained numerical data that one can analyze and perhaps use to compare with current numerical data for this study. Some pharmacies refuse to fill birth control prescriptions due to the ethics of the owners. This article seeks to inform the reader of how ethical issues about contraception are affecting people who buy and sell contraceptives in a pharmacy. The owners of pharmacies believe that is its their right to sell what they please and what they feel is ethically appropriate, however, the law stepped in to insist that all FDA approved drugs be offered to all consumers. Many references are made and there is no bias within the article. This article helps me to develop my ideas of how the ethics of contraception use can affect someone directly, not only from a religious standpoint but from a legal one as well. From the aforementioned sources valuable information on the topic was obtained. Each source provided different perspectives on how the information obtained from the study can be interpreted. Although they were all American sources, with the relevant data for this region interesting comparisons can be made using them. The study should include some numerical data as to contribute to the discussion of the methods and use of contraception in the region. Light can also be shed on the ethical reasons for the use or non use of different methods of contraception and the kind of role that religion, status and economic back ground play in the study.
