A SHORT PURIFICATION RITUAL
FOR THE DEAD
A SUPPLEMENT TO THE THE NAMCH SHITRO

Prepare all the necessary articles, such as the letter NRI to be used
as the visualization support for the Changchog, a torma for the Ob-
structing Spirits, sesame seed, fre and water, sand empowered with
mantras and so forth. The preliminaries and the main practice until
the completion of the mantras of the Namch Shitro are performed
in the usual way.

SUMMONING THE CONSCIOUSNESS
OF THE DECEASED

From the heart of ourselves, visualized as Vajrasattva, we imagine
that infnite rays of light in the shape of a hook spread and instantly
summon the consciousnesses of the deceased, wherever they are in
the Six Lokas or in the Bardo, into the name-label support in such
a way that (these deceased) are perceived as if they were alive, and
we sing:

Repeating this three times in all, we imagine that the consciousnesses


of the deceased, in the form of light, dissolve without duality into the
visualization support, the NRI letter. Then we pronounce:

(consciousnesses of the deceased) into the name-label and that the
deceased are present as if they were actually alive.

ELIMINATING THE OBSTRUCTORS
WHO ADHERE TO THE DECEASED

We sprinkle the torma for the Obstructors with water and empower
it with the mantra:

empowering it with mudras and mantras, we offer it saying:

manifesting Vajra Pavilion, we pronounce:

We place a fre at the right of the visualization support, the NRI in-
scription, water at its left, and sesame in front of it. Then we sound:

which abide at their hearts in the form of a black letter KAM, exit
from their nostrils in the form of black scorpions and dissolve into
the sesame seed. Then we pronounce:

their karmic traces - which could produce a rebirth in the Six Lokas.

At the center of ourselves visualized as Vajrasattva, a HUM insepara-


ble from the consciousness of the deceased rises up from the heart to
the crown of the head by means of HUM sounded three times. With
the sound PHAT we imagine that the HUM is transferred to the heart
of Guru Vajrasattva above our head.

On the occasion of the Purifcation of Obstacles, belonging to the
Shitro of the Namch cycle, to be held in Merigar West by the
Dzogchen Community in the Fire-Female-Boar year for the beneft of
all the deceased who have a relation with us, I, the gyalkhampa (one
who travels around the world) Chgyal Namkhai Norbu, prepared
this simple way to perform the Changchog rite. May it become the
cause of immense beneft and happiness for all the beings who have
a relation with us. Virtue! Virtue! Virtue!
