Commission for Persons with Disabilities Medford Human Rights Commission May 22, 2013

Present: Chief Leo Sacco, Charlotte Swartz, Steve Honeycutt, Henry Milorin, Dale Bryan, and Diane McLeod Excused: David Harris, Lois Bronnenkant, and Marie Cassidy Introductions March & April Minutes Steve motioned to accept both minutes, Henry seconded, all in favor. Old Business Disability Awards There was discussion about the Disability Awards nominations. Charlotte nominated an individual, Henry seconded and all in favor. The tentative date is June 12th. Diane will confirm. Commission Ordinance Discussion We reviewed and discussed the modified ordinance line by line. There was general agreement on page one and some discussion on page two, three, and four that will include input from the City Solicitor. Diane will update the ordinance and finish the functions sections and submit it to the group for feedback. New Business Correspondence & Announcements Variance Requests Diane presented correspondence (a variance request) for 1134 Mystic Ave. There is a set of about 7 steps in the front. There is a ramp to the side of the building. The request is for Front Entrance Relief. Diane did a site visit and recommended no objection with conditions; the ramp must be rebuilt and provide new railings at the proper height that are continuous. The lip at the threshold must also be fixed. Motion to accept recommendations made by Steve and seconded by Chief Sacco. Diane will forward a letter.

Steve received a variance on 3780 Mystic Valley Parkway. The variance is on sink depth is a common request as most sinks are deeper today to be more usable. The maximum depth allowed for accessible sinks is 6 , and the petitioner wants to include 8 sinks and put a 6 sink, that is currently in stock in upon request. These sinks are changed out free of charge to the tenant. Not everyone who has a disability requires an accessible sink. Steve asked about which sink will be originally installed. Diane hadnt received the paperwork yet, but will review it and let him know.
