Introduction
ABCD institution is one of the pioneer of higher education centers in Sri Lanka. It has closer to 300 students following higher education. ABCD offer education is Business stream, Computer, and Hospitality streams. It offers education certificates from university of Wales. My work at ABCD institution is not more than a month. ABCD Institution does not have any e-commerce portals. As one of the pioneers of the trade it is my recommendation to create a web portal with access for student to improve the standards of educating, To take the great step of create not just an institution but a better educating school. E-Commerce This is the shorter form for the term Electronic commerce. It is the use of electronic data transmission to implement or enhance any business process. Currently there are many uses of internet. There are hardly any without any access for internet. With this radical change of internet usage the companies have brought in new market strategies to retain and increase their customer base. E-commerce changes all business functional areas and their important tasks from advertising to paying bills. One of such steps is to create shopping opportunities in the World Wide Web. In addition to buying or selling online, firms engage in many other business activities that keeps the business floating. For example: Identification of demand, creating awareness of products, promoting the product, accepting orders, delivering products.
E-Commerce for Institutions As given above the general idea of e-commerce an institution does not do any direct selling of a product. Instead it can create a web portal that show what the institute is offering for its students. The web site can offer following information for their users; 1. Courses offered at the institute.

2. Affiliated universities. 3. Student alumni 4. Course structure. 5. Fees and other information of course work. 6. Student corner ( past paper, module work, additional reading books, e-library, past paper, examination results, class schedule, homework submission, assignment submission, chatting and document sharing with other student etc) 7. Event calendar. 8. Achievements of the Institution. 9. Contact details. A presence e-commerce at an institution can be a fruitful exercise. The site can help students, lectures, administration staff, and potential customers. Given below is a picture of a web page of Singapore Informatics in Sri Lanka.
1. Cost effective in the long term. Creation of a web portal helps the company to reduce cost in the long term. Though the investment cost for the company is high the cost can be reduced in the long term by means of cost effective marketing, postage cost etc. When considered in the long term the institute will be able to save millions of cash. 2. Increase sale. The sales of the institution can be increased when the customers are well informed of what the institute is offering. If the institute offer online enrolling for classes the students will be persuade to join the institute. By offering e-learning many georgraphical areas can be covered hence student in any part of the country will be able to join the institution. 3. Understanding needs and want of student. The institute will be able will able to be in touch with the students easily thereby providing an opportunity to learn the needs of the students and cater accordingly. This creates a friendly environment for the students to learn. By tracking the activity of students the administration will be able to have a better understanding of the taste and needs of the students. This will help the institute cater those needs well and creating a good student base. 4. Increase efficiency. The institute will be able to keep the students constantly informed of changes and also reply and give quick responses to queries. By providing efficient services the potential students will be interested to join the institution. 5. Increases the Institution reach. The institution will be able to reach a wide area of target market. This could easily increase sales. The institute will be able to attract many at once with a lesser cost when compared with time. The organization will be able to increase the sales and achieve the business goals.
7. Security problems. The e-commerce portals can face many security problems and hence there is a need to keep updating and increasing the safety of the web site. Some information given on the web can be edited by the hackers and also information can be stolen by other parties. It is always necessary to keep securing the site from hackers. 8. Ability of creating and spreading a bad reputation. E-commerce can also allows to spread bad repustion very quickly. for example: Facebook page where a dissatisfied customer can make a post on a bad service provided and many will be able to review and comment.
