Mining profitability is heavily dependent on carefully controlling capital and operating costs. Transportation often takes 3060% of the total, and rising fuel prices have put fuel consumption on everyones agenda. More of the same is not enough. Its time for smarter mining solutions.
Volatile mineral prices combined with the decrease in prime mineral bodies are making secondary deposits increasingly interesting to explore and exploit. These smaller mines and extensions from existing mines often lead to longer transport stretches from the mine to the processing plant. This throws an advantage to smaller, less expensive road trucks that use much less fuel. If youre talking 5060 liters/hour for a large machine, you can often plan on 2025 liters/hour for a Scania truck. Bigger isnt always better Scania trucks have some tangible benefits that affect costs and productivity. When hauling away from the pit, they dont require wide roads that are expensive to build and maintain. They can also be operated on public roads while meeting the highest highway safety requirements in the world. In many cases, customers are finding that the lower total operating costs of our robust trucks outweigh the benefits of conventional, over-dimensioned mine haulage equipment. Another bonus is shorter lead times for delivery. But that isnt all. Modular design and lean production Since we build our vehicles according to a 70-year tradition of modular design, we use significantly fewer parts than the industry average. That alone can affect your maintenance time and costs, and equipment availability. We keep things simple. The same parts that go into our truck engines also go into our gensets and busses. The combustion unit is exactly the same, whether its an inline 5, an inline 6, or a V8 engine. This also eases the burden of recruiting and training mechanics and technicians. Our maintenance solutions are ready to back you up even in remote, sparsely inhabited locations. Our field workshops are based on a modular container system that can be put into operation a week or two after a concrete foundation has been laid. Weve already proven this in many countries worldwide. People are part of the system And while it may be hard to recruit and retain competent drivers and service personnel in remote areas, we have staffing and training programs to get you up to speed quickly. Our mobile field service managers can be brought in to supervise and train a local permanent maintenance team. Safety all around

Scania mining trucks are designed to ensure a high level of safety from every perspective. Safety for the driver requires a comprehensive approach to cab design and safety testing. Safety for the surroundings involves broader design and construction aspects.
At Scania safety comes first. We deliver safe solutions by always putting safety first; when we develop products, when we offer you a solution and when we provide service. Equipment service is done safely and we ensure that the equipment is always fit for safe use and that the operator can operate the equipment safely. Cab safety Scania cabs have immense strength, high-quality materials throughout, comprehensive corrosion protection and a superb finish. The distinctive shape and imposing appearance of a Scania cab is built around a tough, rigid steel cage. The structure has been designed to withstand severe impacts. Cabs are impact-tested and crash-tested to meet Swedish and European safety standards, the toughest in the world. They can be fitted with ROPS/FOPS to meet global safety standards. Active safety Active safety is about making vehicle operation as secure as possible, by minimizing the risk of collisions and other incidents that could lead to damage or injury. Active safety is centered on giving the driver better feedback and control. We at Scania are constantly working to improve visibility, handling, primary and secondary braking and stability.

Passive safety Passive safety focuses on design aspects that minimize the consequences of a collision consequences that affect the driver and occupants of other vehicles. This includes structural integrity, instrument positioning and dispersion of impact forces. We decided very early on that for fire safety reasons, all Scania engines should have fuel and heat on separate sides of the engine. Therefore, we have one cool side with fuel and one hot side with exhaust gases. All sources of heat are kept isolated in a single area on one side, away from fuel sources. In addition, the vehicles can be equipped with fire suppression system.

Trucks for in-pit mining have to measure up to the highest requirements for durability, reliability and safety.
Scania trucks are suitable for ore and waste transport and mine infrastructure construction. They also have the advantage of being road legal, which makes them easy to move between operations. This makes Scania trucks a flexible alternative, well suited for production ramp-up or expansion phases of mines, or for customers who want to have flexible equipment suited to many tasks, reducing transport system complexity. We have vehicles with a wide variety of configurations suitable for in-pit mining, both below and above ground. We can provide three, four and five-axle dump trucks up to a 46-tonne payload, depending on operating conditions. Nearly every one of them can be delivered in an AWD configuration where extra mobility is needed. geared for uptime Because uptime is crucial, Scania in-pit mining trucks are designed to meet the highest requirements with the highest possible efficiency. One of our customers, for example, was able to reduce in-pit cycle time from 90 to 50 minutes based upon a customized product and analysis of the total operation cycle. When it comes to performance, Scania engines are renowned for their power, torque, driveability and operating economy. High torque ratings provide exceptional driveability with a minimum of gearchanging, which is a plus when navigating through a mining site.

Consequently we offer rugged off-road trucks with a wide variety of specifications. They have robust under-carriages with high ground clearance, powerful brakes, specialized gearboxes and axle configurations.
We offer 4x2, 6x4 and 8x4 trucks with a single-reduction drive axle for lighter applications. When the going gets tougher, were right there with 8x6 and even AWD 4x4 or 6x6. Or why not an 8x8 for exceptional mobility? Frontwheel drive can be supplied as permanent or engageable. Our solutions include SCR (selective catalytic reduction), a proven after-treatment system that ensures exhaust gases are released with minimum nitrogen oxide, and EGR (exhaust gas recirculation), meaning theres no need for particulate filters, leading to fewer parts, less bulk and lower costs. Warranties Scania offers a 12 months warranty on all trucks, buses, engines and parts, without any limitations on operating time or mileage. Look for the fine print. You wont find any. Maintenance Contracts We offer tailored, full-service contracts for preventive maintenance and full maintenance (FMC, covering both preventive maintenance and repairs). We offer long-term maintenance contracts that can be tailored to each and every vehicle in your fleet, depending on its operating characteristics. By working proactively in this way we help optimize the performance, uptime and operating efficiency of your fleet over its entire working life. Parts, lubricants and the service technicians time are included, so that you can see a predictable fixed cost per month. Our full maintenance contracts (FMC) cover preventive maintenance and repairs, and are your insurance against unforeseen repair costs. As with maintenance contracts, these can be tailored to individual vehicles and their operating characteristics. This includes all parts necessary for operability, plus installation and fitting time. A full maintenance contract provides the convenience of paying a fixed, predictable amount that could be calculated per kilometer, per hour or per tonne of material transported.

In the end, this saves you valuable time and contributes to operational uptime. tire and wheel management We can manage your wheel and tire services, keeping these vital parts from causing unplanned slowdowns or breakdowns. Good tire wear can be obtained by checking tire inflation, which is often neglected. Our approach includes monitoring tire wear, keeping a supply of tires in stock, anticipating the need for tire changes and carrying all of these steps out with minimal disruptions to production flow. We will also take care of tire disposal, avoiding possible environmental concerns. Fuel management Scania vehicles are renowned for excellent fuel economy and for consistently meeting and beating increasingly restrictive emission requirements. All our vehicles offer an outstandingly low total cost of operation. In selected markets it is possible to use our fuel management services, in which we can guarantee a given level of fuel consumption (say, 1820 l/hr), on condition that we manage the maintenance of the vehicle, optimize its running characteristics, and train the drivers. The results can be documented so that you can show your customers, in black and white, exactly what you are doing to minimize emissions and environmental impact of your operations. Like you, Scania is committed to a cleaner environment and reducing CO2 emissions. Vehicles have to be on the move no matter what. Even in conditions where the going is tough and trucks can be running for 22 hours a day. In order to keep up productivity and profitability you need the best solution for the maintenance and repair of vehicles. Thats why on-site support in mining can make all the difference.
Scania field workshops now operating in 15 mines in 10 countries are designed to be easily adapted for different operational needs, and even for use on short-term worksites, providing everything you need to keep your mine transport running, without unnecessary interruption. Mobile modules quickly in place Our container-based solution is everything a permanent service facility is, except that it is mobile, flexible and a lot cheaper. And because mines demand a variety of special requirements we have units that do the job, continually ensuring quality of repair and availability of vehicles. In the remote and demanding environment of mining , as well as all the tools youll need to perform the basic and specialized repairs required, we can also provide field managers and within two years train local technicians. A field workshop consists of as many as eight types of containers enabling thousands of combinations, each with its specific purpose: Workshop, lubrication, parts storage, environmental station, office, changing room, accommodation and kitchen. We can have you up and running with a Scania Field Workshop in less time than you think. We fly in our installation team, set it up and hand you the keys. Scania Parts a worldwide supply network Scania has over 20 regional distribution depots and 1600 service points worldwide united by a computerized global system for parts supply. We offer over 95% parts availability within 24 hours to any Scania Service point. We stock the parts you frequently need on-site. We can even set up service and parts depots along your transport routes. Since we build our vehicles according to a 70-year tradition of modular design, we use approximately 50,000 parts while the industry average is about 80,000. About 90% of our engine parts are common regardless of whether they are in trucks, buses, gensets or water pumps. The combustion unit is exactly the same, whether its from an inline 5, an inline 6,or a V8 engine. This means more efficient support and service, taking less space for parts and tools. uptime and rapid maintenance Our maintenance procedures are built on maximizing uptime. At our facility, we can change an engine in six hours instead of taking two days to repair it. Overhauling a Scania engine takes only 23 days in a properly equipped field workshop.

Before a mine is opened and production starts, we can advise on mine transport and logistics planning. Given production targets and presumed production flows per day, we can provide advice on: Infrastructure and road development Vehicle specifications that take into account in-pit, out-bound haulage and service vehicles Route planning for public and non-public roads Planning road maintenance Vehicle maintenance planning Transport staffing, recruiting and training Road economics in particular can be very important at the mine planning stage, and will contribute significantly to the total cost of operations. Using smaller and more versatile vehicles often means building less expensive roads. The roadbeds dont have to be as wide or as well supported to ensure high bearing capacity. Fleet flexibility is also determined by the choice of road design. Great cost savings can often be realized by reducing the overall transport system complexity, for example, by designing roads to use the same equipment for both ore and waste handling. The Scania modular design system is flexible, with component commonality resulting in a significantly lower number of parts. This converts to easier mechanic training and greater efficiency advantages in equipment servicing.

Focused improvement services For existing mines especially those that may be enlarging or ramping up operations we can help you improve production flows and productivity while reducing costs. We can teach mining operators to identify transport bottlenecks in the flow and suggest improvements that may depend on loading and payload characteristics, journey time, and refuelling needs. Using smaller trucks in some solutions may also lead to using routes that rely more on public roads and bridges, which could in turn lead to cycle time reductions and cost savings. Using our Scania Fleet management system, we can contribute to monitoring and reporting on loading, unloading, driver behavior, safety followup and route planning. Since Scania trucks, buses and engines can be used for so many tasks cutting down variability and needs for different parts maintenance can often be simplified. Exploration, service and dump trucks use almost the same components, so organizing service and parts is more efficient and can improve equipment availability. We can help you plan, organize and staff maintenance workshops in a new way.
