Lesson Plan 22/8/13 Period 2 Topic: Social Influence on Individual Behaviour: Pro-social behaviour & Anti-social behaviour Year

Level: 11 Learning Outcomes: Pro and anti-social behaviour of the individual: Characteristics of and factors influencing, pro-social behaviour: situational (bystander intervention and effect), social norms reciprocity principle; social responsibility norm; personal (empathy, mood, competence); altruism Characteristics of, and factors influencing anti-social behaviour: diffusion of responsibility, audience inhibition; social influence; cost benefit analysis Research methodologies and ethical principles associated with the study of memory, as outlined in the introduction to the unit. Introduction: Revise over concepts learnt last lesson: Draw on board a flow chart/tree outlining the factors covered so far to assist students in their understanding of how these concepts can be mapped out. Have students attempt to remember what was covered and identify the information that comes under each heading without referring to their notes. As the lesson continues, add to the flow-chart/tree so that students continue to remain familiar with the concepts and how they relate along the way. Body of Lesson: Pro-Social Behaviour Power point Continue explaining the factors affecting pro-social behaviour (personal characteristics: empathy, competence, mood) and Altruism Allow students time to write down important definitions - advise Personal Characteristics: Empathy, Mood, Competence Question If someone is drowning, who do you think is more likely to help, a swimmer or a doctor? Altruism: a personality trait someone who helps others and does not seek any personal reward Question What is the difference between Altruism and ProSocial Behaviour (if you look at the definitions, they are very similar) what distinguishes them from each other

Anti-Social Behaviour Power point Define anti-social Behaviour as the opposite of pro-social: selfish behaviour that is negatively viewed by society or results in a reward to the person involved. Diffusion of responsibility: relate to the Bystander effect and the reason why it occurs as being Diffusion of Responsibility. YouTube video: Bystander effect (3.45 minutes) Advise students that The bystander effect has three elements that could explain why people dont help with others are around: Diffusion of responsibility, Audience Inhibition and Social Influence SAM 6.7 Factors influencing anti-social behaviour Assessment: Monitoring student responses and ensuring they do not have any misconceptions about the content.
