hiang Mai remains the heartbeat of the North. The city has nearly everything that Bangkok has but with nature much closer and easier to get to.
You can be shopping in the city in the morning then be ready to camp out in the wild in the afternoon. With its cooler climate, the northern cities are ideal for open-air markets and walking streets. At these places, the selection of food is amazing, and all the hand-made handicrafts boast a stunning variety of artistic design at bargain prices. Northern people are certainly proud of their art and design, from their fabrics, all the way up to their architecture. Whether you are in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai or Nan, prepare to be charmed by the elegant but subdued artistic style of the North. This artistic character seems to permeate every aspect of northern life, whether it is a hand-woven basket, elephant mahout seat, banana leaf wrapping of a local dish or the gable of a house. The unique blend of natural settings and the gentle charm of the people are signature attractions of the North where elements of Thai culture become a classroom for cooking and language. The North is also the official spa region of Thailand. Not only is the setting in itself a calming factor for visitors, but the wide selection of treatments, the skilful and gentle staff and ingredients that can work magic on your body are very easy to find. Increasingly, visitors are settling in this region for longer stays to get to know the culture, and many end up staying for good.
Another welcome feature of the region is the possibilities for voluntourism. Apart from chilling out at spas or by the river and shopping for bargain handicrafts, many visitors opt to do some work while holidaying here. On offer are opportunities to care for elephants or teach English to young schoolchildren, to name a few possibilities. This is not so different from the Thai students spending their school breaks in remote villages helping the locals on the farm or cleaning up the libraries. Among the latest attractions in the North are boat trips along the river, one of which is the Mae Kok River trip to Chiang Rai. The best time to take this trip is at the end of November when the water level is high. This is the perfect way to visit the hill tribes such as Lahu, Karen, Shan and others. Many of the tribes still live in remote areas and, for the most part, have not been influenced by modern life. They still wear traditional clothing and make their living by farming. The most remote of all the hill tribes are the Akha, a nomadic tribe which can only be visited on trekking tours, and they also welcome travellers into their homes for overnight stays. In between the North and the Northeast are the provinces of Loei and Phetchabun, which have attracted more and more visitors with their serene forests and mountains, cool climate and vineyards. Although this area is not really accessible by plane, many choose to go there on road trips, making occasional stops to taste local dishes and to visit temples and nature reserves along the way. For most people, a trip to Loei and Phetchabun means hiking in the forest as well as visits to the orchards to taste local fruits and the regional cuisine. New ecologically-sensitive resorts are becoming an emerging feature of this area. 16
The Northeast, meanwhile, has seen significant growth in agricultural tourism as well as trips aimed at highlighting the region as the rice bowl of Thailand. With nearly 100 varieties of rice, in recent times there have been an increased interest in local types of rice and the Northeast is the best place to learn all about it. The restaurants serve a wide variety of different rices in their dishes, and visitors also can find out for themselves how the rice is grown. Some even try planting rice themselves as part of their visit. As for accommodation, this region has seen in recent years more establishments that are designed to be sensitive to the local environment and geography. Travel in these parts has become easier for the not-so-adventurous as there are more boutique resorts providing both comfortable and luxury accommodation and guided trips to nearby national parks or historical sites. Some organise for guests picnics by the river or among the limestone rock formations. Not to be missed are the spicy local dishes with unusual selections such as freshwater seaweed, ants eggs, and every imaginable part of a cow, accompanied by fresh local vegetables and tangy pastes. Visitors to this area are not only drawn to the seasonal festivals but increasingly to experience the lifestyle of the local rice farmers or fishermen. You can take boat trips on the Mekong River for the day or overnight, when the stars and the river can lull you to sleep at night. Another possibility is to add the riverside destinations of Laos to your itinerary, and the boat is the best means of transport for that option. Some parts of the Mekong River have also been found to resemble the stunning limestone-lined rivers of Guilin.

o the east of Bangkok, the coastline unravels 400 kilometres all the way to the Cambodian border. In this region, there are several fun spots, and not just the type involving crowded beaches and seedy bars.
Beyond Pattaya, the sea is still bright blue and the locals still know how to cook delicious dishes cheaply. Fruit growers, meanwhile, will always welcome your help picking the fruits. So east of Bangkok is not all about entertainment, but just an hour or two from the famed beach resort of Pattaya, there lies Rayong, Chantaburi and Trat which pride themselves on being able to offer an abundance of pristine beaches, on the mainland and on the islands, as well as fruit orchards and also original and delicious local cuisine in restaurants hidden away within the charming old towns. Instead of heading straight to the islands, visitors have actually made final destinations out of these beach towns and fruit orchards where in the past they had usually just passed through without stopping. At the orchards, especially during May-July, you can pick the fruits yourselves and eat them directly off the trees, except for the durians, and pay a fraction of what you might end up paying at a supermarket and end up with fruit supplies that will last your family a whole month! After a stroll in the old towns and with a belly full of local foods and desserts, you may still be insisting on that trip to the islands. If that is so, there is a dazzling array to choose from. Koh Mak and Koh Kood, for instance, can be your dream destination. On quiet Koh Mak, you can put up your hammock on an isolated beach or, indeed, the next one over, which is just as perfect and pristine. Another alternative would be Koh Kood next door, which has gorgeous beaches and snorkelling areas where the 42
Parrot fish come up really close to you. Relaxing at one of these beaches can make you forget everything else except for the sea, the beach and the sky. And once youve spent some time at one beach, theres always another one, and another one, and another one! Take your pick as to whether you want to take a dip in the turquoise blue sea, get a massage followed by some coconut juice that comes fresh in a whole coconut, or simply watch the sunset on as many different beaches as you can find. Round off the day with fresh seafood that will arrive freshly caught in the boats brought up to the shore by local fishermen. Its not going to get much fresher than this! And after all the naps, massages and snorkelling, and if you feel like youve seen enough of these particular islands, there is ample opportunity for more island hopping elsewhere, whether to Koh Chang, Koh Laoya or the other islands. In terms of accommodation, there are all kinds, but this area has seen more up-market establishments with private villas and pools established in recent years. Some of these islands still retain some forested land, so it wouldnt be surprising to come across small animal tracks and exotic birds whilst hiking in these parts. These island paradises are close enough so you wont have to fly there, and speed boats can take you there from the mainland in less than an hour.

or many people, the central region of Thailand is all about Bangkok, so they just hurry off to the beach somewhere, to Ayutthaya for a day trip or simply catch a flight to places afar. In fact, there are many places right around Bangkok that have retained the laid-back lifestyle of days of yore.

The floating markets of Thailand are truly a sight to behold. Vendors paddling boats filled with fruit and flowers populate the waterways and engage in barter and banter with buyers walking alongside the canals. These unusual traditions and striking colours are easily some of the most picturesque sights in Thailand. One of the most popular floating markets is at Ratchaburi, just a one-day trip from Bangkok. But of course, it is not the only place. Thanks to a renewed interest even among Thai visitors in traditional markets, both the floating and the land-based kinds, there are more and more of these places to choose from. In fact, you can go to less crowded ones that are close by, such as Bang Nampeung and Bang Pongpang in Samut Songkram. Alternatives that are closer to Bangkok include Klong Lad Mayom in Thonburi and Don Wai in Nakorn Pathom. It is by spending time watching the boats go by and observing the vendors and their customers chatting leisurely and going about their daily lives at about the same speed as that of the paddle boats, that you will experience a friendlier, more laid-back side of Thailand that used to be much more common at one time. Only an hour from the city, the town of Ampawa is where traders sell their goods directly from specially equipped boats. It is possible to go for the day or stay in one of the resorts by the canals and watch the fireflies drift by at night, with all types of accommodation available.
Westward from Ampawa is Phetchaburi, which is famous for the intricate craftsmanship displayed within the ancient temples and also its beaches. Next door is Hua Hin, a resort well known for its white-sand beach stretching three kilometres to the south and for the areas numerous golf courses. The resort town is characterised by beach homes and chic bed & breakfasts. Among newly arrived establishments are Vic Hua Hin, a modern theatre and art centre which is both a school with full-time students as well as a venue for regular performances and workshops. Ban Silapin Hua Hin is a gallery where local artists showcase their work and is well worth visiting. For visitors keen to explore the outdoors, the Sam Roi Yod National Park is just an hour down the coast and offers stunning scenic views. There are also jungle-covered mountain peaks within the park, with mangrove forests which can be visited by long-tailed boats. The park is inhabited by over 300 species of wild birds and animals, and the mangrove forest is a favourite hang-out for monkeys and occasionally otters. Other up-and-coming travel destinations west of Bangkok include Ratchaburi and Nakorn Pathom, which are not just about temples and caves, but also are important areas for agricultural tourism and art and culture festivals, with a cool and serene climate that is an ideal venue for a perfect family trip or a weekend getaway. You might find some resorts a bit strange, with a hint of Italian style and with sheep and goats rambling about, but thats a sign that this area is growing as a travel destination. A sample itinerary would include a noon visit to a floating market, followed by the art festival in Chet Samian then a stay in a nearby clay 70
hut resort. The next day, you could visit a dairy or honey farm, then have one of the delicious local curries for dinner. Some people have travelled on to Suan Peung where the temperature significantly cools off, hikes can be taken to waterfalls, and a stay in one of the indigenous communities can lead to you sampling some very unusual dishes combined with fresh vegetables and local fried meats. Another must-see destination, to the north of Bangkok, is Ayutthaya, 70 kilometres upstream from Bangkok along the Chao Phraya River. The magnificent temple ruins and centuries-old remains of palaces are testament to the greatness of the former capital of Thailand. Many people opt for overnight stays instead of leaving in a hurry at the end of the day and thus choose to linger over their morning coffees and later go cycling among the ruins. If you want to be on the river, then you can choose to go to Ayutthaya by boats which travel up the Chao Phraya River. Become part of the timeless bustle and activity of the rice barges laden with rice, sand or gravel, ferries, water-taxis and every type of small craft imaginable. Canal cruises, on one hand, are long-tailed boats which take you along a vast network of canals. In these areas, many homes and temples remain orientated towards life on the water and provide a fascinating glimpse into the past. With overnight cruises, you can go further north, as you leave Bangkok in the afternoon and then head towards Ayutthaya where a candle-lit dinner will be served. The next morning, passengers can even offer food to the monks at a riverside temple, and the barge will later move on for a visit to the ruins of Ayutthayas ancient city.

ost travellers know the Southern beaches and islands very well, and places like Phuket and Krabi might come to mind first. In fact, those with more time on their hands, seeking more solitude and a glimpse of the local lifestyle, have long been heading out to Koh Lanta and Koh Samui.
More than 50 islands make up the Koh Lanta chain. Most of the residents of Koh Lanta are fishermen or farmers of one crop or another rubber, palms, coconuts or cashew nuts are the most common crops of the area and the islands retain the feel of a traditional farming community to a remarkable degree. There are plenty of hotels of all prices, but most offer the chilled-out ambience of beach life. Widely on offer are local cheap restaurants serving Thai seafood. Many visitors find a secluded spot there almost always is one and settle down to do absolutely nothing. And then theres Koh Samui which has risen remarkably fast to the top of the list of the worlds best beach destinations. After Phuket, it gets the most visitors of any island in Thailand. There seems to be perhaps too many hotels and restaurants on the island and it is not that easy to find a distinctly local atmosphere, but those who appreciate the convenience of direct flights and everything being so close, while finding Phuket too hectic, still regularly head over to Samui. With direct flights from Singapore, Hong Kong and Phuket, foreign visitors make up most of Samuis clientele. The island has therefore seen more and more upscale hotels and restaurants designed to cater for international palates. Entrepreneurs also try to move towards more sustainable practices. Perhaps there is no other way since the island can only support a certain
level of development. Businesses have had to get together to manage their waste, traffic and water supplies. The island now has its own regular arts events, which include the Samui Jazz Festival and Samui Film Festival. The most interesting recent development is a new meditation centre, run by Than Pho of Suan Mokh, possibly the most beautiful centre in Thailand as it sits on a forested hill near Lamai Beach, with stunning views of Koh Phangan. With an international airport, Samui has served as a hub for islandhopping in the Southern part of the Gulf of Thailand. The main challenge is how to balance the international clientele and the local natural and cultural identity of the area. Enough about the beaches. Some of the most talked about Southern Thai destinations in 2010 include Khao Sok National Park in Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat. Khao Sok Parkis one of Thailands bestpreserved habitats for tropical vegetation and wildlife,with evergreen virgin jungle, waterfalls, sparklingclear rivers, streams and limestone cliffs, combined with a lake and a beautiful large reservoir surrounded by jagged limestone cliffs. A stay at the park guarantees sights and sounds that will beguile the mind.And there is now comfortable accommodation of all types available with stunning views of the area, making it an ideal venue for a day of kayaking or easy walking inside the national park. Many people who travel to Thailand talk about getting off the beaten track, but very few have made it to a place like Nakhon Sri Thammarat. Theres been very little significant development throughout most of the area, and traditional resorts and bungalows can still be found for bargain prices although luxury resorts are now easier to find in Khanom. Also, the region is steeped in history, and it features one of the biggest national parks in the region, Khao Luang, with plenty of waterfalls. Also, not to be missed is the Southern-style big breakfast which can include kanom cheen topped with one of five different curries, accompanied by a medley of fresh local vegetables, very strong hot tea with condensed milk, fried noodles in a banana leaf wrap, and a full table of dim sum dishes! The beauty of the Southern provinces is that local communities, in most cases, still manage to retain their lifestyles as farmers and artisans without being completely overrun by tourists. In Nakhon Sri Thammarat, especially, traditional neighbourhoods can still be found, with old teak houses, temple markets, and old tea houses where locals chat away about politics and the price of rubber. Many unique destinations in the South may require you to be driven from the airport or the cities, but its worth the trouble so that you wont be seeing only the cliched attractions that are often swarmed by tourists and shopping malls. Not only will you get some peace and quiet but also you can learn a bit more about the local way of life, and actually get to know them and be part of the original surroundings.
