R.V.College of Engineering (RVCE), Bengaluru, India, is one of India's premier technical institutes. Established in 1963, RVCE is celebrating its Golden Jublee this year. The college currently has about 5200 students and over 400 faculty and 250 supporting staff. RVCE currently offers 12 Bachelor& 22 Master programs (~annual intake of about 1750 students), and carries out research and consultancy activities in all the 15 departments, with provision for PhD Studies. RVCE has set a vision Leadership in Quality Technical Education, Research & Innovation, through Teamwork, with a focus on Development of Sustainable and Inclusive Technology. RVCE is an Autonomous Institution affiliated to Visweswaraya Technological University, Belgaum. The institute has been rated among the top 6 institutions in India for Industry-Academic Collaboration by the recent (Nov,2012) AICTE-CII-PWC survey. Over 22 companieshave invested in labs and facilitated course in the college. The facultyis actively involved in R & D activities (~ 100 projects) and consultancy in collaboration with public and private agencies with funding to tune ofover Rs 30 Crores.

The department was part of an intercollegiate team involved in developing and launching Indias First Pico Satellite. The department is also a part of an interdisciplinary team at RVCE, including Telecommunication, Instrumentation, Physics, Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical & Biotechnology in setting up Indias First fabrication facility for Large area & Flexible Microelectronics (Macroelectronics) & Vacuum Nanoelectronics among Engineering Colleges. E&C department also host labs from companies including Intel, Texas Instruments, NXP and Freescale Semiconductors.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:

Large Area and Flexible Microelectronics(LAFM)is the key enabler of all modern day ICT facilitating technologies including flat panel displays, touchscreens, photocopiers, scanners, printers, medical imaging systems for Xrays, and cameras. Flexible electronics deals with circuits developed using Thin Film Transistors (TFT).The International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS) envisages that of the expected over $5 trillion growth in the semiconductor and electronics industry by 2030, based on the More Than More (MTM) paradigm, large area and flexible microelectronics is expected to be key enabler of all man-machine and machineenvironment related activities to the tune of $4 Trillion. Thus LAFM is predicted in future to be all pervading including healthcare, environmental monitoring, entertainment, display, human machine interactivity, energy conversion & management, storage, communication and wireless networks. Synthesis is a process by which an abstract level of specification is converted into a design implementation in terms of logic gates. Static Timing analysis is a procedure with which analysis of the timing parameters of the netlist are performed without the need for simulation. This involves delay calculations at various stages of the design cycle, such as synthesis, layout etc. The workshop hopes to combine conventional VLSI design aspects along with the key fundamental features of LAFM and give a brief overview of this emerging futuristic area of electronics. Especially showcasing, how with a little bit of effort, we could engage in truly advanced area of technology even in our own academic environment and develop novel devices and system such as System on Chip (SoC) and System in Package (SiP). Visit to some of the growth and characterization facilities in the campus related to LAFM. The workshop will be conducted by experts from Industry, R&D and Academia.
