Saturdays AIDS Walk expected to draw 10,000

Mitchell Gold, Bob Williams to serve as grand marshals
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS mlavers@washblade.com An estimated 10,000 people on Saturday are expected to participate in the 27th annual AIDS Walk Washington in downtown D.C. The 5K walk and run that will benet Whitman-Walker Health and 13 other HIV/AIDS service providers will begin and end at Freedom Plaza. NBC 4 anchor Eun Yang will emcee the event for the second consecutive year. So many people with HIV and AIDS in our community are living strong lives thanks to the good work of Whitman-Walker Health, Yang told the Washington Blade. This walk celebrates that work and helps ensure it will continue, all the while remembering those we have lost to this horric disease. Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams will serve as grand marshals for the event. Since we opened our store on 14th Street, weve been proud to work with Whitman-Walker to help provide worldclass HIV care and outstanding health care to the residents of D.C., Gold said. The AIDS Walk will take place less than a month after D.C. ofcials issued their annual HIV/AIDS epidemiology report. It noted 15,056 Washingtonians or 2.4 percent of D.C. residents were living with the virus at the end of 2011. Men who have sex with men and heterosexual sexual contact were the two leading modes of transmission among newly diagnosed HIV cases, but the report found they decreased 46 percent in D.C. from 2007. The report noted the number of HIV/ AIDS-related deaths in D.C. dropped from 425 in 2007 to 251 in 2011. It also said 80 percent of those who learned they were living with the virus in 2011 were linked to HIV-specic care within three months of their diagnosis. Our city has borne a disproportionate burden during the HIV/AIDS epidemic and, although things have improved in recent years, we still have a long way to go, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray told the Blade. By participating in the walk, District residents can get us a few steps closer to the day when events like AIDS Walk Washington will no longer be necessary. D.C. Congressional Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton is among those who are expected to take part in the AIDS Walk alongside Gray.

Graham undecided over re-election bid

Gay Council member forms exploratory committee

Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) on Oct. 15 led papers with the Ofce of Campaign Finance to form an exploratory committee to help him decide whether to run in the April 1, 2014 Democratic primary for a fth term in ofce. Three other Democrats have already announced they will run in the Ward 1 primary regardless of whether Graham enters the race. Ive had so many people ask me, are you running, are you running? Graham told the Blade on Tuesday. I wanted to do something formal to indicate Im thinking about it and Im touching bases with a lot of people and thinking about a lot of things, he said. This is a big decision in my little life and I want to make sure that I make it right, Graham said. And there is no way to do all of this without an exploratory committee because its the only mechanism that we One of the candidates running in the Ward 1 race, public relations consultant and civic activist Brianne Nadeau, made an appeal for support on Oct. 14 at a meeting of the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, the citys largest LGBT political organization. The Stein Club has endorsed Graham in each of his four previous races for the Ward 1 seat. Another candidate running for the seat is Bryan Weaver, a longtime community activist and former Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner who ran and lost to Graham in the 2010 Democratic primary. The third candidate to enter the race so far is Beverly Wheeler, an adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon University and former chief of staff for D.C. Council member Phil Mendelson (D-At-Large), prior to Mendelsons election as Council chair. Weaver has been the most outspoken among the three candidates in criticizing Graham for breaching city ethics standards following a decision in February by his Council colleagues to formally reprimand Graham over an allegation that he improperly intervened in the negotiating process for a city contract with a developer. The Council acted after the citys newly created independent ethics board ruled that Graham, while not violating any law, breached a code of ethics as a Council member by intervening in the contract process. Graham has strongly disputed the claim that he acted improperly, saying he favored one developer over another for a Metro-related project in his ward based on the belief that the company he favored was better qualied to do the work. In a development likely to surprise some D.C. political observers, another one of Grahams former election opponents, gay Republican Marc Morgan, who lost to Graham in the November 2010 general election, this week called Graham a champion for the residents of his ward. In trying to put political bias aside, I must admit that Im a fan of Jim Grahams, said Morgan, a Ward 1 ANC commissioner. Over the past four years Ive had the opportunity to really get to know him, Morgan told the Blade. I admire his work I can tell you that in my area the residents are extremely satised with him.

Activist Phil Pannell hospitalized

Veteran gay rights and Ward 8 community activist Phil Pannell was said to be resting comfortably and in stable condition on Wednesday after he became ill while attending a ribbon-cutting ceremony earlier in the day led by Mayor Vincent Gray and was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. A spokesperson for United Medical Center in Southeast D.C. said Pannell, who was admitted to the hospitals emergency room, was undergoing tests and that an update on his condition would be released sometime later. Pannell was among several dozen people, including city ofcials, attending a public ceremony celebrating the near completion of G8WAY DC, a newly built park and pavilion facility located on the Longtime activist PHIL PANNELL campus of St. Elizabeths Hospital. Pannell has been a prominent LGBT rights and Democratic Party activist in D.C. for more than 30 years. Hes also a widely recognized community and civic leader in Ward 8, where he has played a leading role in projects and programs to boost economic development and social services in sections of the city east of the Anacostia River. Group celebrates 2nd anniversary helping youth, others
By STEVE CHARING There was a urry of activity at the public library on E. Patrick Street in the heart of the historic district in Frederick, Md., on a recent Saturday morning. Inside, several people were lugging pamphlets, name tags, business cards, beverages and pastries into the librarys community room while others were setting up tables and chairs and preparing a Power Point presentation. Outside the building on this cool October morning, you could peer through the famous spires of Frederick and see the autumn colors on Marylands mountains in the west. The foliage may as well have been rainbow colors, as the folks performing these tasks inside were getting ready for the second annual general meeting of the LGBTQ Frederick Center or simply The Frederick Center (TFC). Fifteen years ago, the idea of a gay center in Frederick would have been considered unimaginable. Alex X. Mooney, a virulently anti-gay conservative Republican from Frederick was elected to the state Senate in 1998 using, in part, a message warning voters of the homosexual agenda. He once said, Homosexual activists have managed to gain legal recognition as a minority, based solely on their lifestyle choices, through so-called hate crimes and domestic partnership laws. Employing divisive rhetoric like that, Mooney was elected two more times, reafrming Fredericks conservative leanings, but with decreasing margins each time. But Mooney was nally unseated in 2010 by pro-LGBT former Frederick Mayor Ron Young. Frederick County, an exurb of Washington D.C. and Baltimore roughly equidistant to bothhas seen a growth in population of around 25 percent since 2000. Much of this increase is attributed to an inux of young married white-collar workers and professionals or singles moving into new housing developments. Indeed, the median age in the county is seven years younger than the rest of the state. With the arrival of younger, more educated residents, a less conservative tilt exists, but the political landscape has not shifted to the point where it is like Montgomery County or Baltimore City. Brian Walker, president of the TFC board, said while there has been progress inside Frederick especially due to the increasing number of afrming churches, the attitude toward LGBT folks outside of Frederick has been spotty. But a pro-LGBTQ mindset appears to be on the rise here. Although in 2012, Mitt Romney defeated President Obama by a 50-47 percent margin in Frederick County, voters afrmed Question 6 on same-sex marriage by 2,400 votes or 51-49 percent. The Frederick Center emerged because its founder realized something was missing. I felt there was a need for an LGBTQ center in Frederick because of my experience, says Austin Beach, 21, who is also the executive director of TFC. As a young man discovering my identity I had no resources that where easily available to me and I felt rsthand how that affected me. I didnt want anyone else to go through that same process of feeling there was no one there to help them. In January 2012, TFC was born. Cindie Beach heads up TFCs youth group, where over the past two years, there had been a total of 70 youth and of those, seven were at one time homeless. She said she also performed four suicide interventions. To succeed, the youth must have a roof over their heads and food in their mouths, she said. We need emergency housing and long-term housing for these kids and a support system in place. Some get thrown out for being LGBT and appear at my door. It breaks my heart. TFC does not have a permanent home as of yet. It holds events in Fredericks afrming churches and other pro-LGBTQ business establishments. But that could change. I envision the center being a focal point of support, resources, and education for Marylanders LGBTQ community both inside, but especially outside of the D.C. and Baltimore areas, says Austin. I hope to soon see us having our own space, offering transitional services, counseling, shelter space, etc. to the LGBTQ community and if all goes well, being on the forefront of LGBTQ advocacy in Maryland in the ever-growing area of Frederick For more information about The Frederick Center, visit thefrederickcenter.org.
Stein Club prez to step down, run for veep

In a surprise development, Gertrude Stein Democratic Club President Martin Garcia has announced he will not seek re-election as president and will run instead next month for the clubs position of vice president for legislative and political affairs. Garcias announcement comes nearly one year after he and a slate of candidates he recruited shook up the clubs established order by winning control of three of its ve ofcer positions. In the process the challengers effectively wrested control of the club from its longtime leaders, including then President Lateefah Williams, who lost her re-election bid to Garcia. In my tenure as president of the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, Ive been humbled by the LGBT leaders here in the city and proud of the work that weve been able to do together, Garcia said in a statement. We have been able to accomplish a lot in this last year and ensure that the Stein Club remains as inuential in the District as it has always been, he said. Garcia, an account manager for a D.C.-based political consulting rm that works mostly with progressive Democratic candidates, said he decided to seek the clubs vice presidential post for legislative and political affairs so he could devote more time on the upcoming 2014 D.C. elections. He said he is endorsing the person he would replace in the vice presidential post, Angela Peoples, in her bid to succeed him as president. She has shown outstanding leadership this past yearand I am excited to continue working alongside her to amplify the voice of LGBT Democrats in this city, he said. Meanwhile, Vincent Paolo Villano, who won election last year as vice president for administration on Garcias slate, has announced he will not run for re-election for that or another ofcer position at the clubs upcoming election on Nov. 18. And club treasurer Barrie Daneker, who was re-elected last year unopposed by the Garcia slate, also announced hes not running again for an ofcers post. Stein Club Secretary Jimmie Luthuli, who also won re-election last year unopposed, said at the clubs Oct. 14 meeting that she plans to run for an ofcers position but hasnt decided which post to seek. Anti-gay groups donate thousands to Va. GOP candidates

Pro-gay attorney Ted Olson gives to Cuccinelli campaign

LAVERS mlavers@washblade.com The latest campaign nance reports that Virginias Republican candidates for statewide ofce led last week indicate they continue to receive signicant nancial support from social conservatives and anti-LGBT groups. The campaign nance report that Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli led with the Virginia Board of Elections on Oct. 15 notes Leadership Institute President Morton Blackwell gave the gubernatorial hopeful $19,665 on Sept. 12. Morton, who opposed the gay group GOProuds participation in the 2011 Conservative Political Action Conference and received an award during last years Values Voter Summit, has given the Cuccinelli campaign a total of $25,878. Morton also gave $1,000 to state Sen. Mark Obenshain(R-Harrisonburg)s attorney general bid on Sept. 30, according to campaign nance records. Campaign nance reports indicate the Family Research Council Action PAC on Sept. 30 made a $5,000 contribution to E.W. Jacksons campaign; hes running for lieutenant governor. The group also donated $20,000 to Cuccinellis campaign on Aug. 31. Obenshains campaign on Sept. 10 received a $10,000 contribution from Pat Robertson, according to a campaign nance report it led with the Virginia Board of Elections on Oct. 15. The antigay televangelist also gave $2,500 to Jacksons campaign on Aug. 31. One of the lawyers who recently joined a federal lawsuit that seeks to overturn Virginias same-sex marriage ban contributed to Cuccinellis gubernatorial campaign last month. A campaign nance report that Cuccinelli led noted former U.S. Solicitor General Ted Olson gave $1,000 to Cuccinellis campaign on Sept. 3. Olson, who served in the position under then-President George W. Bush from 2001-2004, contributed to Cuccinellis campaign less than a month before the American Foundation for Equal Rights announced that lawyers representing Timothy Bostic and Tony London of Norfolk and Carol Schall and Mary Townley of Richmond asked him to join their case. Foster Friess, who backed former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorums 2012 presidential bid, on Sept. 19 gave Cuccinellis campaign $20,000. Campaign nance reports further indicate the billionaire businessman has thus far contributed $50,000 to the attorney opposition to marriage for same-sex couples and other gay-specic measures in the commonwealth. The U.S. Supreme Court earlier this month denied Cuccinellis request to appeal a lower court ruling that found Virginias sodomy law unconstitutional. Cuccinelli, who has previously described same-sex sexual acts as intrinsically wrong, in July reafrmed his opposition to homosexuality during a gubernatorial debate against former Democratic National Committee Chair Terry McAuliffe. The current attorney general in 2010 recommended Virginia colleges and universities remove LGBT-specic provisions from their non-discrimination policies. Cuccinelli was also among those who spoke at an anti-gay marriage gathering at a Manassas church last October to which the Washington Blade was denied access a California pastor who attended the event described gay men as predators during a separate event at a Baltimore church the week before that Family Research Council President Tony Perkins, Bishop Harry Jackson, Jr., of Hope Christian Church in Beltsville, Md., and others attended. LGBT rights advocates have repeatedly blasted Jackson over his comparison of gay men to pedophiles and describing them as very sick people. Obenshain sponsored a bill that Gov. Bob McDonnell signed into law in March that bans public universities from denying recognition and funding to student organizations that discriminate in their membership based on sexual orientation and other categories that federal law does not protect. He also opposed a measure a Virginia House of Delegates subcommittee in February tabled that would have banned discrimination against LGBT state employees. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, stars of the TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting whose eldest son now works as a lobbyist for the Family Research Council in D.C., joined Cuccinelli on the campaign trail last week. Cuccinelli reiterated his opposition to marriage rights for same-sex couples in response to the Blades question after he and McAuliffe squared off in a debate sponsored by the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce and NBC 4 in McLean last month. He declined to say whether he feels his position on the issue and his previous anti-LGBT statements have received too much attention on the campaign trail. Thats a very sensitive issue, and I respect that, Cuccinelli told the Blade as he discussed his position on samesex marriage. There are people who feel very strongly about it, and I respect that. For those folks they want to hear about it, it is one of a range of issues.
Poll: Cuccinelli too conservative

A poll that Rasmussen Reports conducted on Oct. 20 shows McAuliffe leads Cuccinelli by a 50-33 percent margin. Eight percent of respondents said they support Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Robert Sarvis. Forty-six percent of likely Virginia voters who responded to a Quinnipiac University poll conducted between Oct. 2-8 said they feel Cuccinelli is too conservative. Ken Cuccinelli has spent his career demonizing and insulting gay Virginians, McAuliffe campaign spokesperson Josh Schwerin told the Blade. Its no surprise that some of his biggest donors would have equally offensive records. Equality Virginia Executive Director James Parrish noted Cuccinelli, Jackson and Obenshain all have a record of being openly hostile to LGBT Virginians through their own statements or their legislative actions. Its not surprising that Pat Robertson, Family Research Council and other opponents of fairness and equality are funding the most right-wing, anti-gay, antichoice ticket to ever run for statewide ofce in Virginia, gay state Sen. Adam Ebbin (D-Alexandria) added. Theyre not just conservatives; they are zealots on a mission and its a common mission that some of their most prominent donors share.

John Rocovich, Jr., a member of the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors who led efforts to remove sexual orientation from the universitys anti-discrimination policy in 2003 when he was rector, has given $38,986 in cash and in-kind contributions to Cuccinellis campaign. He has also contributed $7,500 to Jacksons bid and another $18,750 in cash and in-kind contributions to Obenshains campaign. The Family Foundation, a Richmondbased group that supports the commonwealths constitutional amendment that bans same-sex marriage and opposes LGBT-specic measures in the General Assembly, has also contributed to the three mens campaigns. Roger Pogge of the Family Foundation has given $400 to Cuccinelli, according to campaign nance records. Pogge has given $250 to Jackson and another $200 to Obenshain. The re-election campaign for state Del. Brenda Pogge (R-James City), whose husband is Roger Pogge, has given $1,150 to Cuccinellis gubernatorial bid. Campaign nance reports indicate the Republican lawmaker has also given $500 to Obenshain. Jackson in his latest campaign nance report noted a $1,500 donation to the Family Foundation on Sept. 24. This contribution came less than two weeks before the organization held its annual dinner in Richmond at which Cuccinelli and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) spoke.

McAuliffe and Jackson and Obenshains Democratic opponents state Sens. Ralph Northam (D-Norfolk) and Mark Herring (D-Loudoun) respectively have all publicly backed marriage rights for same-sex couples. The former DNC chair has repeatedly said as governor he would issue an executive order that would ban discrimination against LGBT state employees. Campaign nance records indicate that McAuliffe, Northam and Herring continue to receive signicant nancial backing from LGBT contributors. McAuliffes latest campaign nance report he led with the Virginia Board of Elections on Oct. 15 indicates Tim Gill donated $10,000 to his gubernatorial bid on Sept. 25. The gay philanthropist on the same day made $2,500 contributions to Northam and Herrings campaigns.

Homophobia prompts judge to leave GOP

SAN ANTONIO A Texas judge on Oct. 21 cited homophobia within the Republican Party as among the reasons that prompted him to leave the GOP. Rational Republican beliefs have given way to ideological character assassination, Bexar County Court-at-Law Judge Carlo Key said in a video posted to his re-election campaigns website. Pragmatism and principal have been overtaken by pettiness and bigotry. Key specically highlighted former San Antonio Councilwoman Elisa Chan, who described LGBT Texans as disgusting before she resigned in August to challenge state Sen. Donna Campbell (R-New Braunfels), in his video. I cannot tolerate a political party that demeans Texans based on their sexual orientation, the color of their skin or their economic status, Key said. I will not be a member of a party in which hate speech elevates candidates for higher ofce, rather than disqualifying them.

Chris Christie on Monday announced his administration will no longer challenge a court ruling that extended marriage rights to samesex couples. Chief Justice Rabner left no ambiguity about the unanimous courts view on the ultimate decision in this matter when he wrote, same-sex couples who cannot marry are not treated equally under the law today, Christie spokesperson Colin Reed said, referring to the state Supreme Courts unanimous decision on Friday that denied the governors request to postpone Mercer County Superior Court Judge Mary Jacobsons Sept. 27 ruling that found the states civil unions law prevents same-sex couples from obtaining federal marriage benets until the justices rule on his administrations appeal of it. Ray Lesniak (D-Elizabeth) shortly after midnight. Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D-Teaneck) walked the two women down the aisle. Steven Goldstein, founder of Garden State Equality, an LGBT rights group, read a Jewish blessing. Fourteen states and D.C. now allow gays and lesbians to marry. Observers noted Christie had little choice but to drop his appeal of Jacobsons decision. The handwriting was on the wall as clearly as it could possibly be, Larry Lustberg, a lawyer who represented Walpin and Shapiro and the other plaintiffs in the 2011 case, told reporters on a conference call on Monday as he spoke about the state Supreme Courts decision. This was inevitable. Hayley Gorenberg of Lambda Legal said during the same conference call that the justices ruling is the last word from the court and marriage equality is now the law in New Jersey.
School res teacher after she weds

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. LGBT rights advocates have urged a Catholic allgirls high school to reinstate an English teacher who lost her job after she married her same-sex partner. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported Tippi McCullough said Diane Wolfe, principal of the all-girls Mount St. Mary Academy called her 45 minutes after she married Barbara Mariani in New Mexico on Oct. 16 and told her the school would re her if she did not resign. McCullough told the newspaper that Wolfe said her wedding violated her contracts morality clause. Human Rights Campaign President Chad Grifn spoke at a Little Rock press conference with McCullough and Mariani on Oct. 22. As an educational institution and one of deep faith, Mount St. Mary should be setting an example of tolerance and acceptance ideals put forward recently by Pope Francis as he urges the Catholic Church hierarchy to put aside judgment of LGBT people, Grifn said. Mount St. Mary Academy President Karen Flake defended the schools personnel policies in a statement to the Associated Press. Sometimes adherence to the churchs teachings may be difcult, challenging and/or unpopular, she said. We recognize that some may disagree with our actions, and we respect their right to do so.
Business owner targets lesbian employee

COALPORT, Pa. Pennsylvania authorities have accused the owner of a social service agency that works with people with disabilities of trying to hire his uncle to kill a lesbian employee. The Associated Press on Oct. 22 reported state police said Shane Ryan Krestar, owner of Key Life Human Services, contacted his uncle about an employee who demanded a raise and a promotion to supervisor. The woman reportedly told Krestar if this did not happen, she would play the gay card. We have to get rid of her, Krestar allegedly told his uncle last month during what the AP reported as the rst of their four meetings. Krestars attorney told the news wire there is no credibility to the charges: solicitation to commit criminal homicide, solicitation to commit aggravated assault and making terroristic threats. The AP reported Krestar has remained in jail since authorities arrested him on Oct. 18 because he is unable to post his $200,000 bail.

Another marriage moment before years end?

Action underway in New Mexico, Illinois and Hawaii
By CHRIS JOHNSON cjohnson@washblade.com The month of October 2013 could go down in history as a milestone in the marriage equality movement. In addition to New Jersey becoming the 14th state in the country to make same-sex marriage legal, states across the country in recent days saw developments in the legislatures and the courts on marriage equality that could expand that roster of equality states by the end of the month. James Esseks, director of the LGBT project for the American Civil Liberties Union, predicted during a conference call with reporters last week the activity on same-sex marriage this month could create another marriage moment. I think we are approaching another marriage moment this fall with potential developments in three to four states coming soon, Esseks said. The action on marriage comes on the heels of the ling of new litigation both in federal and state courts as well as new legislative efforts seeking marriage equality initiated after the Supreme Court ruled on the Defense of Marriage Act and Californias Proposition 8 in June. Dan Pinello, a political scientist at the City University of New York, said the activity on marriage equality at this time is in part the result of the Supreme Courts actions. The high courts decision unleashed a oodgate of pent-up demand in the LGBT community that is nding true expression in a tidal wave of federal litigation, Pinello said. The ruling also prompted an increased awareness of newly recognized constitutional rights among federal judges in the lower courts. The outcomes of all this legal activity will emerge over the next several years. The Washington Blade has already provided coverage of developments on marriage equality in New Jersey and Michigan. Here are details on other states in recent weeks. the equal protection provisions under the state constitution. Same-sex couples were represented by attorney Maureen Sanders, who articulated a similar view. She argued the gender-neutral law doesnt allow gay couples to marry in New Mexico, but said denying same-sex couples the right to marry is a violation of the New Mexico Constitution. Sanders also argued gay people should be considered a suspect class. The court shouldnt look to the recent advancement in LGBT equality, she said, but the long history of discrimination the LGBT community has experienced. Justices appeared skeptical of the idea of continuing to ban same-sex couples from marrying in New Mexico. In response to Campbells argument that marriage is for procreation, Chief Justice Charles Daniels noted many benets related to marriage arent given to couples based on whether theyve had children. Despite hopes that the court would issue a ruling on marriage equality at the conclusion of the arguments, justices signaled as they began they would need more time. Its unclear when a decision could come down, although it could be a matter of weeks. partnership system is inadequate for gay couples even though it provides them the legal equivalent of marriage. Relegating same-sex couples to registered domestic partnership is no remedy, the brief states. That novel, inferior status qualies unmarried samesex couples for virtually no federal benets, and instead designates samesex couples as second-class citizens and subjects them to a host of practical difculties and vulnerabilities. Accompanying the opening brief is a motion to the court for permission to le another brief no longer than 26,500 words for an adequate exposition of the plaintiff couples claims. Friend-of-the-court briefs in favor of marriage equality were also due in the case on Wednesday. That marks the opportunity for the Obama administration to weigh in on the lawsuit by ling its own friend-of-the-court brief in the case. Lambda has previously said it would welcome a brief from the U.S. Justice Department in the case, but as of Tuesday had no information on whether one would be forthcoming.

The New Mexico Supreme Court heard oral arguments on Wednesday in a case brought by all 33 New Mexico clerks, state district courts and a group of same-sex couples seeking a determination on whether state law permits same-sex marriage. The arguments in the case, Griego v. Oliver, were divided into two portions. The rst examined whether the current
statutory scheme for marriage under New Mexico law already allows samesex marriage because portions of it are gender-neutral. In the second, attorneys made their case on whether samesex couples have a guaranteed right under the state constitution to marry regardless of what the statute says. Representing Republican lawmakers seeking to prohibit same-sex marriage in New Mexico was attorney James Campbell, who argued that only the legislature has authority to legalize marriage rights for gay couples. Campbell maintained marriage under New Mexico law is reserved for opposite-sex couples because those unions, unlike same-sex unions, have a natural ability to procreate. Campbell also argued that the court shouldnt determine gay people should be considered a suspect class because they enjoy political power. The legalization of same-sex marriage through state legislatures as well as the Democratic Party and President Obamas endorsement of same-sex marriage, Campbell said, is evidence of this political power. Representing the views in court of District Judge Alan Mallot, who had previously ruled that same-sex couples can marry because of the genderneutral language in the marriage law, was attorney Daniel Ivey-Soto. Attorney General Gary King sent two attorneys to argue a more middle-ground argument. Assistant Attorney General Scott Fuqua argued that the current gender-neutral statute doesnt permit same-sex marriage, but Assistant Attorney General Sean Cunniff maintained gay couples should be allowed to marry under

All eyes will be on the Illinois Legislature in the coming days as lawmakers return for a veto session that will likely include a vote in the State House on marriage equality. On Tuesday, the rst day of the veto session, supporters held a March on Springeld to urge passage of the marriage equality legislation. Speakers at a rally held near the State Capitol Building included Gov. Pat Quinn and U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.). According to Buzzfeed, Durbin invoked the Supreme Court decision against DOMA while speaking before the estimated 2,300 attendees about passing marriage equality legislation. Now that the Supreme Court has ruled, I say to members of the Illinois House of Representatives, you have an awesome and historic decision, Durbin said. Will you offer to everyone married in our state regardless if straight, gay, lesbian, whatever will you offer them the same federal benets, or will you discriminate against some. The regular session of the legislature concluded in May, to the dismay of supporters of same-sex marriage, without a vote on same-sex marriage legislation in the House that was earlier passed in the Senate. Gay State Rep. Greg Harris declined to bring the legislation to a vote because he believed it lacked sufcient support for passage.
Nevada
The federal marriage equality case that is closest to the Supreme Court is also seeing movement as proponents of marriage equality following the lead of Lambda Legal, which is responsible for the lawsuit were set to weigh in on bringing marriage equality to Nevada. On Oct. 18, Lambda Legal led a 100page brief before the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in the case of Sevcik v. Sandoval, a lawsuit the organization led last year. Because the case is now before an appellate court, its the most advanced lawsuit thats pending before federal courts. The opening brief makes use of the U.S. Supreme Court decision against the Defense of Marriage Act by arguing that Nevadas ban on same-sex marriage deprives gay couples of the crucial benets just as the anti-gay federal law had done. By foreclosing same-sex couples from marriage, Nevada inicts virtually the same collection of federal harms and deprivations on unmarried same-sex couples as DOMA previously did, since nearly all federal benets are unavailable to unmarried couples, regardless of whether they are registered domestic partners, the brief states. A major component of the argument that Lambda makes against the ban on same-sex marriage is the states domestic

Seattle could get gay mayor in off-year election
By LOU CHIBBARO JR. lchibbaro@washblade.com The mayoral contests in Seattle and Houston are being watched closely by LGBT advocates from across the country because the outcome on Nov. 5 could be the election and re-election of openly gay mayors in two prominent U.S. cities. In Seattle, most political observers believe Washington State Sen. Ed Murray is in a strong position to unseat incumbent Mayor Mike McGinn to become that citys rst openly gay mayor. Murray, 59, won election to the Washington House of Representatives in 1995 and was elected to the State Senate in 2006. Hes been credited with taking the lead in pushing for the successful passage of the states LGBT nondiscrimination law and for approval in the legislature of the marriage equality law that voters subsequently passed in a 2012 referendum. In a development that raised eyebrows among Seattles political establishment, Murray beat McGinn by a narrow margin in the citys multi-party top two primary in August by a margin of 30 to 29 percent in an eight-candidate race. Under the citys election rules, the top two votegetters in the primary advance to the general election in November. Murrays supporters were quick to point out that 70 percent of the voters cast their ballots in the primary for someone other than McGinn, a sitting mayor. And two of the primary candidates, both members of the City Council, who received 16 percent and 15 percent of the vote respectively, have endorsed Murray. The most recent public opinion poll conducted by the Seattle-based communications and research rm Strategies 360, which isnt backing any of the candidates, showed Murray ahead by a margin of 51 percent to 34 percent among likely voters. The remaining 15 percent either declined to disclose who they planned to vote for or were undecided. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.6 percent. With McGinn expressing strong support for LGBT rights during his career as an attorney, environmentalist and community activist, observers say LGBT issues arent at play in the election. Instead, the issue on the minds of most voters in a city known as a bastion of liberalism and progressivism is who is most capable of running the city to continue its current strong economic same-sex marriage and has declined to say whether he would support legislation to ban discrimination in Houston based on sexual orientation and gender identity, according to Noel Freeman, president of the Houston LGBT Political Caucus. Freeman said Hall declined an invitation by the group to meet with its members to discuss LGBT issues and refused to ll out a questionnaire on LGBT-related issues that the caucus gives to all candidates running for public ofce in the city. Campaign nance records show that Hall has contributed more than $2 million of his own money to his campaign. Sue Davis, the Parker campaigns communications director, said Hall, while attacking Parker on various nongay issues, has so far not raised LGBT issues or Parkers sexual orientation in the campaign. Annise has said all along she is not going to be the gay mayor but the best mayor, Davis told the Blade. A poll released in early September by Houstons CBS TV afliate showed Parker leading Hall by a margin of 34 percent to 13 percent, with more than 40 percent of respondents saying they were undecided. The remaining seven candidates had a combined total of less than 10 percent. Meanwhile, the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund this week named 10 openly LGBT candidates as part of its annual Races to Watch list after endorsing a total of 85 LGBT candidates that it says represents an all-time high for an off-year election. Among those on the Races to Watch list are Parker and Murray. 2013 isnt an off year, said Victory Fund Political Director Lucinda Guinn. Its denitely on at the Victory Fund. Guinn said the national LGBT advocacy group that raises money and provides campaign support for LGBT candidates for public ofce was focusing on candidates in places where LGBT rights have not advanced as rapidly as in other parts of the country. Were working hard this year to help build up heroes in places where equality is late in arriving, she said in a statement. Places where these candidates can be the spark to help their own communities move toward equality. Of the 85 LGBT candidates the Victory Fund endorsed this year, 18 have won primaries and advanced to the general election on Nov. 5; 14 have won in general elections already held; and one emerged as the victor in a runoff election, bringing the total number of winning LGBT candidates so far to 33.

But they say its possible that her lead rival, millionaire attorney and philanthropist Ben Hall, could capture enough votes to force Parker into a runoff election, which would take place in December. Under the Houston election law, a mayoral candidate must win at least 50 percent of the vote in a multi-candidate race to win the election outright without a runoff. Parkers supporters say she is well known and well liked in a city where she has served six years as an elected City Council member and another six years as city controller before being elected to her rst two-year term as mayor in 2009. Should she win in November she would enter her third and last term under Houstons term limit law. Some observers say that Hall, who is black and obtained a masters of divinity degree before becoming a lawyer, could make inroads into Houstons black vote, including socially conservative blacks, who comprise as much as 30 percent of the citys voting population. LAVERS mlavers@washblade.com Gay MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts last week announced he will co-host next months 2012 Miss Universe pageant in Moscow amid ongoing concerns over Russias LGBT rights record. Courage is contagious, Roberts wrote in a column his network posted to its website. I have felt that way since coming out publicly in 2006. Ive never regretted it. Roberts, who married his husband, Patrick Abner, in New York in 2012, further described his decision to cohost the pageant with singer Mel B as a huge, visible opportunity for LGBT people everywhere. I am not a special case. I am a good person, good spouse, good child, good sibling, good friend and hard worker. That is me, he wrote. I am just like millions of LGBT people around the world. We are good, regular, hardworking people who come from solid families. So when I heard there was a chance at this assignment I aggressively went after it. Lo and behold the Miss Universe team, NBC Entertainment and the Trump team agreed and offered it to me. Roberts announcement comes roughly two months after Andy Cohen told E! News he turned down a request to co-host the pageant, in part, because he didnt feel right as a gay man stepping foot into Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin in June signed a bill into law that bans gay propaganda to minors. A second law that bans foreign same-sex couples and any couple from a country in which gays and lesbians can legally marry from adopting Russian children took effect in July. The Family Equality Council and other LGBT advocacy groups have also criticized a proposal that seeks to allow authorities to deny parental custody based on their sexual orientation. Author Dan Savage, playwright Harvey Fierstein and others have called for a boycott of the 2014 Winter Olympics that will take place in Sochi, Russia, in February over the Kremlins LGBT rights record. John Aravosis of AMERICAblog is among those who questioned Roberts decision to co-host the Miss Universe pageant that will take place in the Russian capital on Nov. 9. If Thomas Roberts thinks he can give gay Russians hope, then Id implore him to do far more while hes there than simply host the Miss Universe pageant and assume that everyone knows hes gay and married to a man, Aravosis wrote. The benets of such a trip are still unclear, the risks however are not. The Miss Universe Organization in August criticized Russias gay propaganda law and the ongoing antiLGBT crackdown in the country. The Miss Universe Organization believes in equality for all individuals and is deeply concerned by the laws recently enacted in Russia and currently in place in several other countries, it said. Both the law, as well as the violence experienced by the LGBT community in Russia, are diametrically opposed to the core values of our

Donald Trump, who co-owns the Miss Universe Organization with NBC Universal, criticized the Kremlins LGBT rights record during an interview with Roberts last week. I dont like what its all about, Trump said. We can go over there and make a difference. But Trump is known as an outspoken conservative Republican who opposes marriage equality and who promoted the false notion that President Obama wasnt born in the U.S. Roberts declined an interview request with the Washington Blade, but he further discussed his decision to co-host the pageant on Morning Joe. Im openly gay; Im happily married and I dont think anybodys going to tell me that Im less than, Roberts said. And so for that very reason thats why I wanted to go and accept this assignment. I think its a wonderful assignment because this is going to be seen by a billion people in over 190 countries and if they happen to nd out that Im gay and married and my husband Patricks going to be there with me, fantastic.

Fertility clinics help more gay couples have kids

BOSTON Fertility clinics are now using a new method for lesbian couples that allows both women to share in the biological role: one womans eggs are mixed in a lab dish with donor sperm then implanted in the other woman who carries the pregnancy, the Associated Press reports. Its called the two mom approach by Dr. Alan Copperman, a medical doctor at Reproductive Medicine Associates, a New York City clinic. He spoke last week at a fertility conference in Boston about the method, the AP reported. One Canadian study suggests that more lesbian couples have been seeking fertility services in Ontario since same-sex marriage was legalized in the province a decade ago, the AP article said. Some doctors think interest also is up in the U.S. For male couples, many clinics offer egg donors and surrogate moms, using one or both mens sperm.

Testing Together program to be expanded

WASHINGTON A new program called Testing Together that was successfully piloted in several major U.S. cities is being rolled out nationally in HIV prevention programs funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It allows gay men in committed relationships with other men to be tested together, NPR reports. HIV testing is typically done individually with the results being disclosed in private but with research pointing to as many as two-thirds of new HIV infections happening among committed couples, health ofcials say joint testing could have huge implications for HIV prevention.
UCLA to study substance abuse and HIV

LOS ANGELES The National Institute on Drug Abuse has awarded the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) a $7 million grant to investigate the links between substance abuse and HIV among Latino and African-American men who have sex with men, the university announced. Researchers will examine how non-injected drugs and alcohol can directly interact with the virus and other infectious diseases, to damage these mens health. Enrollment in the study begins in January, the school announced in an article on its news portal. Called MASCULINE (MSM and Substances Cohort at UCLA Linking Infections Noting Effects), the study will be led by Pamina Gorbach, a professor of epidemiology at UCLAs Fielding School of Public Health and a professor of infectious diseases at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and Steven Shoptaw, a professor of family medicine at the Geffen School and director of the UCLA Center for Behavioral and Addiction Medicine. For the study, researchers will establish and maintain an extensive repository of tissue, blood and uid samples. The study will involve a cohort of young substance users particularly users of stimulants who have poor histories of adhering to antiretroviral treatment, allowing researchers to test the biological inuences of substances on immune function, the University announced.
Kuwaiti government plans test to ban gays

NEW YORK In an interview with a local newspaper, an ofcial of the Kuwaiti Health Ministry said his government is developing a medical test to detect gays and lesbians so they cannot enter the country and others in the region, Newsweek reports. Health centers conduct the routine medical check to assess the health of the expatriates when they come into the (Gulf Cooperation Countries). However, we will take stricter measures that will help us detect gays, who will be then barred from entering Kuwait or any of the GCC member states, the ofcial said to the newspaper Al Rai in a quote shared in the Newsweek report. He said the proposal would be considered in November. Medical experts say blood tests for sex chromosomes can determine if someone was born male or female, but no test is known to authoritatively test for sexual orientation, the Newsweek article said. Vladimir Putin has found some unlikely U.S. allies in his efforts at smearing lipstick on the pig that is his oppressive government. MSNBCs Thomas Roberts, whos gay, released a self-important announcement last week that he plans to co-host the Miss Universe pageant in Moscow, crowing that courage is contagious. I am not going to boycott, Thomas writes. Boycotting and vilifying from the outside is too easy. Rather, I choose to offer my support of the LGBT community in Russia by going to Moscow and hosting this event as a journalist, an anchor and a man who happens to be gay. Let people see I am no different than anyone else. Lets unpack this fantastical statement. First, those who have assailed Putins anti-
gures from President Obama to Bravos Andy Cohen (who turned down the Miss Universe hosting job) to newly out actor Wentworth Miller. They have condemned Russias push to criminalize pro-gay propaganda and efforts to ban couples from countries where same-sex marriage is legal from adopting children. Second, touting your journalistic credentials while accepting a cheesy gig from none other than Donald Trump, who owns the pageant, is downright laughable. Trump has been outspoken in his staunch opposition to marriage equality. Rather than take questions from actual journalists, Roberts interviewed Trump on his own show to discuss the controversy last week. The two talked a big game of taking on Putins anti-gay laws. The gay groups in Moscow are loving the fact that we are going over there,

actly they plan to do about it, nor did they name any Russian gay groups that are allegedly celebrating this tawdry pandering. Finally, Roberts thinks that allowing viewers to see that hes no different from anyone else will somehow improve life for Russian gays. The reality is that viewers wont see anything that Russian censors dont want to be shown. Viewers will see the photogenic Roberts dutifully reading his teleprompter, towing the line for his homophobic boss Trump. Roberts ego knows no bounds as he compares his courage to that of Harvey Milk, writing, I go to prove theres hope. Roberts actions accepting a big fat paycheck from a homophobic Tea Party birther like Trump to host a beauty pageant bare no resemblance to activism or journalism. Roberts is shilling for Trumps corporate interests and, in the process, giving cover to an oppressive government. He should reconsider and drop out of this train wreck if he hopes to preserve whatever is left of his credibility. And Roberts isnt alone in giving cover and comfort to Putin. The Washington Post and New York Times continue to publish supplements, thinly disguised as advertorials, paid for by the Russian government. The special sections are inserted into the print editions of the newspapers and amount to nothing more than pro-Putin propaganda. Publishers make decisions all the time about what kinds of advertising to accept and reject, including ads for alcohol, cigarettes and sexually oriented businesses, among others. The Post and Times cover Putins anti-gay efforts on their editorial pages but then, as readers turn the page, they are subjected to unchecked pro-Putin propaganda. Surely Jeff Bezos, the Posts new owner and $21 billion man, doesnt need Putins money. Hes talked of reinventing newspapers for the digital age. Lets hope the industrys future doesnt lie in trading credibility for a quick buck from dictators, despots and killers like Putin.

Even after two weeks, I still feel shut down

Government remains open until next time
But I gure everyone will be dressed as scary Ted talking or Miley twerking. So Im just going to dip myself in Betadine, pour a bourbon straight up, light up a non-electronic cigarette, declare victory and trick-or-treat as John Boehner. I will, of course, refuse all treats. Even after a couple of weeks of reopened government, I still feel essentially shut down. It feels different from the time Newt Gingrich, Son of Chucky, shut the government down in Bill Clintons second term. Back then Newt, ironically now of Firing Line, was counting on Bill to be working late in the White House so he could send in Monica Lewinsky with some pizza. Game on! Three years of impeachment shenanigans. Those were the good old days. Twenty-four billion dollars and rising international laughing stocks later, I like to wonder what would have happened if women had tried to shut the government down? Odds are we would have been in orange onesies in Gitmo in two hours, and Id be playing Big Boo, what Honey Boo-Boo is going to look like when she grows up. We would never have made it to 12 days. Apparently Im not as shutdown as some of the Affordable Care Act portals with the rotating rainbow assholes endlessly spinning on timed-out pages. Where are all the geniuses who dataminded President Obamas re-election? They cant all be developing the next shiny new thing. Where are the Grindr people? Edward Snowden has time on his hands. No one asked me to be a healthcare navigator, so they cant be that desperate. Maybe Ill dress up like HHS Secretary Kathleen Sibelius. Perhaps its that Ive been out of town and reading newspapers on my iPad, saving trees, but harming untold numbers of Chinese youth. Not too many youth, because its an iPad-mini which seems to mini-mize all news, allowing me to read the headlines, with perhaps two explanatory sentences and then go on to the next news-bit. From government shutdown to gay marriage in New Jersey to baseball playoffs in one small swipe. Congratulations to New Jersey! Its the phrase government shutdown that gets me down. No agency. No responsibility. It just up and shut down. Closed in on itself like some big slimy amoeba. Before shutdown comes shut-up or STFU. Behemoth juggernaut Italian cruise ship headed toward the rocks. All by itself. So passive. Chris Christie lap band, lip band.

Only 59 patients have applied and been approved for the Districts medical marijuana program since it nally launched four months ago. As currently set up and based on the participation rate, it is an unsustainable business model. On Monday the owner of Capital City Care testied at a D.C. Council health committee public hearing that his medical marijuana business, like two other dispensaries in operation, is losing money and more patients are needed to keep the doors open. His was the rst of three distribution centers that opened in the nations capital, of a maximum eight allowed. The storefront dispensary, in a converted townhouse on North Capitol Street, N.W., enjoys a view of the U.S. Capitol from its doorstep. An owner of one of the separate cultiva-

Unless enterprise conditions change and the surprisingly low level of patient participation increases, the entire medical marijuana program may go up in smoke. It took 15 years for D.C.s voter-authorized medical marijuana program to go into effect. Following approval of a ballot initiative in 1998 with 69 percent support, Congress banned implementation for nine successive years utilizing oversight authority over District legislation. When the prohibition was lifted in 2009, it took the city government more than three years to establish regulations. D.C. ofcials instituted the nations most restrictive rules compared to the 20 states that have enacted laws legalizing medical marijuana programs. Home cultivation, approved by voters as part of Initiative 59, was not included.
severe muscle spasms, such as multiple sclerosis. Potential patients must present a recommendation from an authorized doctor licensed and practicing in the city for approval by the D.C. Department of Health. Fewer than 70 doctors have so far indicated interest in participating. The regulations prohibit identifying doctors able to prescribe marijuana. Expanded access advocates suggest adding medical conditions that would qualify for treatment. Included among these recommended ailments are epilepsy, post-traumatic stress disorder, Crohns disease, digestive ailments and migraine headaches. Of note, epilepsy is a qualifying condition in 17 of the states with medical marijuana programs. Some proponents urge further expansion to additional pain-causing illnesses. Others worry that abandoning the citys cautious regulatory approach and introducing lax eligibility policies might stir a quiet federal beast and provoke prosecutions.
Deterrents to participation also include a cumbersome application process and a requirement that doctors, patients and city-sanctioned growers and distributors sign an acknowledgement that the activity is in violation of federal law. D.C. Council Committee on Health Chair Yvette Alexander voiced an important observation regarding the low participation level at a public hearing this week. She noted that despite a signicant HIV and AIDS rate, for example, the number of those affected signing up is low, accounting for slightly more than half of the 59 participants. Whatever the cause of low participation numbers, it is not clear that expansion of qualifying ailments and medical conditions would sufciently increase participation numbers. Is market need fullled by illegal product acquisition? Was patient interest grossly miscalculated? Is the citys culture too risk-averse for an activity that is in violation of federal law? Is registration with the government a unique obstacle in a town accustomed to diligent privacy protection? The programs future could also be complicated by D.C. Council or District voter approval of decriminalization or full legalization and home cultivation. Legislation has been introduced and potential ballot efforts have been announced for both propositions. Consideration must be given to the possibility that actual patient demand may not prove sufcient to sustain a robust number of commercial business operations.

Will Republicans keep the government open?

Time is right for moderates to rise in both parties
far left of the Democratic Party. But we have seen that when those groups are ascendant in either party that party usually loses. They create havoc, but in the long run they arent the ones that can get people together to move the nation ahead. Todays far-right hero is Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and he is scary. Listening to him last Sunday in an interview he did with Dana Bash of CNN, you had to acknowledge how smart he is even if his thought process seems deranged. He nds the words to make what he nearly did to the nation make some kind of sense and to justify his efforts to close the government and nearly drive the nation into bankruptcy. This when we know that what he actually did is cause interest rates to rise upping the cost of mortgages and student loans; send workers 401k retirement plans down; cause veterans and seniors a delay in receiving the benets they are entitled to; and hurt small businesses across the nation by taking billions of dollars out of the economy. Yet he had the empathy so when he talked about doing all this to help others, he actually sounded plausible to some. Again the man is smart but very scary. People like Cruz and his acolytes in the House of Representatives have actually been referred to as anarchists and that label may be appropriate. The Republican Partys internal civil war was highlighted on NBCs Nightly News, when anchor Brian Williams asked John McCain (R-Ariz.) a question about relations in the Senate and then cited a comment Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) made in which he accused McCain of supporting al-Qaida. McCain responded Sometimes comments like that are made out of malice, but if someone has no intelligence I dont view it as being a malicious statement. Unfortunately today even those with no intelligence both in and out of Congress manage to get their voices heard. They have their own media outlet and its called Fox News. There are Americans listening only to Fox and the likes of Rush Limbaugh who get only part of the news. They dont hear the other side so its hard to blame them for not understanding what is going on. They hear from those like former Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) who now runs the once respected Heritage Foundation and turned it into an organization to prop up the likes of Cruz and the Tea Party. In doing so he makes once respected conservative Republicans seem like the moderates of the party. Thankfully, Americans have a knack for eventually seeing through charlatans. They eventually abandoned Joe McCarthy when they realized the snake oil he was selling and they will eventually abandon Cruz. But until those in that alternate universe where they exist, some call it the Tea Party, others call it Texas, wake up, their actions will continue to cause untold suffering. The nation is facing many difcult issues. We are still coming out of the worst recession since the Great Depression. We are facing numerous foreign policy issues including ending the war in Afghanistan; dismantling and destroying chemical weapons in Syria; working to keep Iran from getting a nuclear weapon; and trying to restart the Israeli/Palestinian peace talks to name just a few. The world is a complicated place and we are the only remaining super power. Our position in the world will only remain strong if we can work out our domestic problems and come to some agreement so that we can once again be governed in a sane way. Were left to hope that Republicans like McCain, McConnell and Boehner who say they wont shut the government down again will stand strong. The time has come for sane people to resume control of the government.

The Washington Blades annual Best of Gay DC issue keeps growing. This year, there are 71 categories the most ever and nearly 20,000 of you voted to select the winners, also a new record. New this year is a special lifetime achievement award, the only award chosen by Blade staff. It goes to Rev. Dean Snyder of Foundry United Methodist Church. Heres how we arrived at this years list: Back in August, Blade readers were asked to submit suggestions for new categories. Several new categories emerged from that process, including Best Pizza, Best Hamburger and Best Massage. Then in September, we posted the list of categories and accepted nominees from readers. From there, we took the top-five vote getters in each category and the voting commenced. And now, here are your picks along with the runners up for the Blades 12th annual Best of Gay DC. It was a difcult year for Allyson Robinson, who stepped down from her position as executive director of OutServe-SLDN in June. Robinson, who led OutServeSLDN for nine months, was the only openly transgender leader of a national LGBT rights organization. A new group, Servicemembers, Partners and Allies for Respect and Tolerance for All (SPARTA) announced its formation in July, following the turmoil at OutServe-SLDN. Robinson remains a prominent voice for transgender rights and LGBT equality.
Dave Perruzza, perhaps best known as manager of JR.s, also devotes much time to organizing the annual 17th Street High Heel Race. The 27th annual race is scheduled for Oct. 29. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Perruzza began working at the well-known Dupont Circle gay bar in 1996, handling coat check. He soon worked his way up to the top spot at the 17th Street, N.W., bar known for its friendly environment and popular theme nights. Readers from near and far appreciate that Perruzza strives to make everyone feel welcome and at home, whether youre a local headed to happy hour after a long day on the Hill or a tourist looking for a friendly face.

Florida native Josh Deese knew he wanted to make a difference in the LGBT community after being bullied for his sexuality growing up led him to attempt suicide. His experience drew him to The Trevor Projects Youth Advisory Council (YAC). Just having a feeling that people dont appreciate you and that youre worthless takes its toll on you, says Deese. It only takes one, a friend, parent or ally to stand up and save someones life and let them know they arent alone. Deese, who cites Harvey Milk as one of his heroes, has spoken with The Trevor Project about LGBT youth suicide, most recently at The National Cathedral with Judy Shepard, Matthew Shepards mother. He also serves as the Neighboring Commuter Representative on the University of Maryland Government Association. In the future he plans to work in real estate in the D.C. area and eventually would like to run for the U.S. House. He hopes his efforts to help the LGBT community will lead to LGBT youth feeling safer and appreciated in the future. He says he wants them to understand life is an option. Hes a sophomore at the University of Maryland majoring in government and politics with a minor in LGBT studies. (MC)

Now serving as the press secretary and director of online strategy for House Democrats, Skiles rst came to Capitol Hill in 2006 as a communications professional and helped re-launch the LGBT Congressional Staff Association following a period of dormancy. A fth generation Utahan, I credit my communications career to traits inherited from a family of Irish storytellers who taught me that I could do anything if I set my heart and mind to it, Skies says. From learning to dribble a ball as a kid in Catholic Youth Basketball League to working my way up the employment ladder on Capitol Hill my family and community back home have been incredible cheerleaders. Blade readers voted Skiles as Best LGBT Hill Staffer for 2013, making her the third-person ever to receive the distinction. For Skiles, the importance of being out as an LGBT person is paramount for selfrespect and advancing the LGBT cause. It takes a lot of bravery to be honest about who you are knowing that some people might say unkind things or even treat you differently, Skiles said. But its a really powerful way to advance the cause by just having the courage to be yourself. (CJ)

She would make history as the states rst female governor and the countrys rst openly LGBT elected governor if she prevails next year. Diversity is enormously important, she told the Blade. For Heidi Glum (aka Miles DeNiro), drag was a ticket out of a miserable job. I was a shampoo person at a salon, she says. It was a terrible job. I was essentially a maid. So I quit and all I do now is drag. Ive been busting my ass to make it a career. Glum (pronounced gloom) started drag about ve years ago in New York where she says she was a long-time club kid. Back in D.C. the past two years, Glum has several monthly gigs a drag bingo at Mellow Mushroom, Gay Bash, WTF and Crack and a lot of stuff in New York too. At times its been rough going. Glum was attacked by two patrons at Manny & Olgas, a pizzeria on 14th Street in June after a Black Cat performance. Glum was beaten and called tranny and faggot in an incident captured on video. She says her philosophy of great drag means infusing feeling in the work. You can tell when someone is really feeling it, she says. It comes up from somewhere inside you. You either have it or you dont, this sort of spark. You can tell some of them are just dressed up for the hell of it. (JD)

Finding the motivation to maintain a healthy lifestyle can be difcult. Bethany Carter Howlett makes it easier with her tness expertise. Howlett is a professional tness athlete, formerly a body builder and registered dietician. She holds multiple certications and trains anyone from children to professional athletes. She also owns four gyms in Virginia. I feel being a trainer who practices what she preaches by competing, training and living the healthy lifestyle of a professional athlete allows for a strong advantage in my favor among other personal trainers in the area, Howlett says. Her training programs are diverse from one-on-one sessions to group classes. Howlett can train people in person or even online. Her diet plans are specially made to suit the needs of the individual from their genetic lineage to their health history. A Virginia native, Howlett began gymnastics at age 3. As an undergraduate at the University of Virginia, where she received her bachelors degree in molecular biology, she was a cheerleader. Howlett is married to Jason Rowley and they are expecting their rst child. Howlett has continued training clients and working out throughout her pregnancy. Carlos Arroyo says the relaxed atmosphere at JR.s makes it a great place to work. Its a great vibe overall, he says. The clientele is super awesome. We have amazing regulars and people just go there to have a great time. Its not pretentious. They leave work and everything at the door. Its probably one of the most relaxed bars Ive worked in. Arroyo has been in D.C. about 13 years and has dabbled in theater, communications work, personal training, catering and more. He also helps his partner with a photography business and says the two travel quite often. Arroyo previously worked at Number Nine on P Street for about a year and a half, but moved over to JR.s. Hes quick to assert he has enjoyed working at both hotspots. When JR.s comes calling, you cant turn them down, he says. Its one of the busiest gay bars in D.C. (JD)

At just 22, Logan Sutherland is at the beginning of his acting career and hes already winning awards. This is an incredible surprise, he says. I didnt even promote myself. Ive been way too busy! After graduating from American Universitys musical theater program in the spring, Sutherland began landing acting gigs straight away beginning with multiple roles in the Source Festival at Source Theatre in June. Shortly after, he drew praise for his showy turn in this summers Fringe Festival favorite One Night in New York. It was like Disney had made a big gay musical about a guy coming to New York looking for love, he says. I played Andy, one of the bitchy people that he met in Chelsea. He was like the Regina George [from Mean Girls] a real bitch. A genuine triple threat, Sutherland has been performing since he was a kid in small town Schwenksville, Pa. Currently the out actor is understudying for Lulu and the Brontosaurus at Imagination Stage in Bethesda. Later this season he will appear in Woolly Mammoths The Summoning of Everyman, a morality play that now reads as satire. When not acting, Sutherland works as a server at Founding Farmers three blocks from the White House. Hes considering lm work, which may involve a move to New York or California in the future. But for now, the Dupont Circle resident says hes learning a lot and happy to be a part of the D.C. theater scene. (PF)

Jessica Thorne is a fresh and denitely welcomed face on the local theater scene. The self-described straight LGBT ally initially left her native Georgia for D.C. to attend Catholic Universitys musical theater program. After graduating in 2011, she immediately began performing with Synetic Theatre Company, the never boring movement-based troupe based in Crystal City. Im incredibly grateful to Synetic. They changed me as an artist, says Thorne who remains a member of the company. As an actor it makes you incredibly comfortable with your body and who you are in space and time. It was a great experience and very singular to the company. Last season, Thorne was an ensemble member in director Ethan McSweeneys gorgeous production of A Midsummer Nights Dream at the Shakespeare Theater Company. And more recently she shone as wholesome Janet in Studio Theatres Richard OBriens The Rocky Horror Show. As a freshman in high school, Thorne was certain she wanted to pursue a career in theater. She is grateful to her mother and grandmother for supporting her choice to study theater in college. Theyve been there every step of the way, she says. For me, that support has been really imperative in becoming an artist. You base a lot of your success on the people who are backing you. She also thanks her colleagues in the D.C. theater community whom she describes as incredibly supportive and generous. Currently studying voice in New York with singer/composer Marisa Michelson, Thorne considers D.C. home and is slated to perform here in two shows this spring (about which she cannot yet reveal details). Digital photographer Denis Largeron has been shooting part-time professionally for about three years. By day, he works at World Bank. He focuses on commercial work and does weddings, portraits, what he calls boudoir photo and various gay events. I think last year I shot about every gay circuit party there was on the East Coast, he says. Most of the time, its promoters who hire me to shoot their events but I also shoot for some magazines as well. Largeron is gay and came to the U.S. about six years ago to be with a then-boyfriend. For me, its all about having a client and meeting their specic need, he says. Every client has a different expectation and thats what I like about it. You have to adjust. (JD)

Fanning wins the 2013 award for Best LGBT Bureaucrat or Federal Worker and is the rst-ever winner from the Washington Blade in this new category. Fanning, 45, has had a long political career in D.C. After his initial work on Capitol Hill, Fanning worked during the Clinton administration at the Pentagon and the White House. Once President Obama assumed ofce, Fanning went to work within the Department of the Navy and continued in that role until he was nominated as Air Force under secretary. Although the Senate conrmed Fanning for the lesser role as under secretary for the Air Force, Fanning became acting secretary when Michael Donley retired. Since that time, he was among the speakers at an LGBT Pride celebration at the Pentagon in June. In an interview with the Washington Blade, Fanning said he left the Pentagon after Dont Ask, Dont Tell was implemented in the 1990s and didnt want to come back until a president was elected who would end it. It was very difcult when we were getting to the end of the rst two years and it wasnt clear if we were going to be able to repeal Dont Ask, Dont Tell, Fanning said. I didnt know what I was going to do if we didnt get the repeal through because some people couldnt work because they were openly gay or lesbian. (CJ)

Sometimes Saturday is a very short night sleep-wise for David Lett. Hes often out until the wee hours hostessing (as Lena Lett) the drag show at Town Danceboutique. Sundays are often spent doing spiritual duties as supply clergy with the North American Old Catholic Church, an LGBT-afrming offshoot of the Roman Catholic Church where years ago, Lett went to seminary and studied in Rome. Lett says the two roles arent as dissimilar as they might seem. To be a drag performer, you have to be condent and you have to be able to put yourself in front of people and . take them from wherever they are to a new place. A priest does a lot of the same things, theres just not as much liquor going around. The basic tenets of the role are identical. Its just the means by which they are done that is completely different. (JD)
For the rst time in the 12-year history of the Washington Blades annual Best of Gay D.C. readers poll awards, the Blade has selected a lifetime achievement award. This honor is being awarded to Rev. Dean Snyder, an LGBT ally and senior pastor of Foundry United Methodist Church (1500 16th St., N.W.). Snyder, in his 12th year at Foundry in a ministry that began in 1968, says he became sympathetic to the plight and struggle of gay Christians during his years as a campus minister in Pennsylvania. I spent a lot of time listening to my gay students tell me of their struggles, Snyder says. This includes people who desperately did not want to be gay. Ill never forget one student who was in aversion therapy and it just broke my heart to see the pain he was going through. He was so convinced his parents would never accept him and that he could not be a Christian if he was gay. By the time Snyder came to Foundry, he was known within the United Methodist congregation for being an LGBT-afrming minister. The church had become reconciling (its term for open to gays) ve years before he arrived, but he found a simple way to make them feel more included. They were saying that while the church was reconciling, they didnt hear that much acknowledgement of it during the service, Snyder says. I decided I would mention it in some way even if it was as simple as so-and-so is in the hospital, we remember he and his partner George today in each service. I just made it a repetitive thing. I used to think being a minister was about being creative but often its just about saying the same things over and over. Foundry, no doubt in large part for its location between Dupont and Logan Circles, has always had a large LGBT core among its parishioners. Snyder says about a third of its 1,200 members (about 650 attend its two weekly services) are LGBT. He says the denominations General Conference has never punished the church for being LGBT friendly, although the United Methodist denomination as a whole is not totally on board. He says he regularly gets e-mail from around the country from people who chastise us. Snyder says LGBT issues are just one part of the churchs mission. It also works on homelessness, high rates of incarceration among minority youth and other areas in which it advocates for change. Snyder has announced his retirement. He will end his ministry there next June. (JD)

By day hes a graduate student with one semester left to earn his masters in literature. By night, Christian Lezzil strips at Secrets. Having done some modeling during his time in Virginia Beach he came to D.C. about a year ago Lezzil says dancing nude, initially at the behest of a drag queen friend, was a lark. He says in addition to paying for grad school, its had an unexpected benet its given him plenty of material for his writing. He has two books Crimson & Caramel and The Maniac in the Coffee Shop out (written under his real name, Eddie Generazio). It started with a student body competition in Virginia Beach, Lezzil says. Somebody said I should enter and I just thought, Hell, why not? Im not doing anything else. I was waiting to hear back from my graduate school application. I was looking for some kind of alternative lifestyle-type of thing to do and I just thought, Well, whats more alternative than dancing in a male revue? Theres a lot of poetry in there and it just kind of started taking off after I arrived in D.C. I got so much material, my second book kind of wrote itself. The 23-year-old bi Virginia native, Lezzil (a stage name) says he enjoys the irony of stripping and writing. He says many of his colleagues at Secrets are also smart, though some try to hide it. He views his Best Of Gay D.C. award as a validation of sorts. Maybe Im just a jerk and Im inating it, but I think of it as a kind of performance art, he says. (JD)

Stephanie Wilson became executive chef at Level One (1639 R St., N.W.) this past summer. However, her passion for cooking developed long before that. Wilson always had a love for cooking. She went to culinary school at LAcademie de Cuisine in Gaithersburg, Md. From there she worked in kitchens over the weekends. Eventually she worked her way up to full-time sous chef. Her experience led her to learn some cooking tips. Beginning chefs should have patience and practice. Mistakes happen but thats how you learn, Wilson says. Her favorite Level One dish isnt easy to pin down. I love all the dishes because theyre mine what can I say? (MC)

How long have you been out and who was the hardest person to tell? Ive been out since I was 14. The hardest person to tell was my mother, because I didnt want to disappoint her. Whos your LGBT hero? Honestly Id have to say RuPaul. Due to the fact that I do drag, shes been an inspiration in helping not only me but others in my community to become more comfortable expressing themselves through this type of art. Whats Washingtons best nightspot, past or present?
If science discovered a way to change sexual orientation, what would you do? I wouldnt change a thing! Im accepting and loving of who I am. What do you believe in beyond the physical world? I do believe in a higher being. Rather it be God or some other spiritual force, I know there is some sort of energy that helps us make certain decisions and guide us into the right direction. Whats your advice for LGBT movement leaders? Thats a tough one! I think it would be more of a question. I would like to ask them what they are doing for underrepresented LGBT communities. What would you walk across hot coals for?

His rst appearance as alter ego Inertia Dolce came about through a queen competition hosted by BaNaka at JR.s. Last year at this time, against hundreds of other contestants, he won the High Heel Race wearing a pair of knee-high dominatrix-style boots. A trained runner, he says the key to not breaking an ankle is running on the front part of the foot. I enjoy drag because it gives me a chance to have an outlet for another side of my persona, he says. He came to Washington in 2008 after college. Dennis started as a server at Grillsh but worked his way up to management and in July, moved over to Commissary (same owner as Grillsh), the popular P Street restaurant he says is always busy. The 27-year-old Spring Lake, N.C., native lives in Columbia Heights with his boyfriend of nine months, Kyle Craig. He is planning to run again in this years race, slated for Tuesday night from 7-10 p.m. on 17th Street, N.W. (nd the event on Facebook for details). Dennis enjoys video games, kickball, tennis, TV and Netix in his spare time.

Describe your dream wedding. Ive never really given it much thought to be honest. I do know I want it to be outside, near a body of water, with close family and friends. What non-LGBT issue are you most passionate about? Higher education reform. What historical outcome would you change? The blood donation laws that prohibit gay men from donating blood. Whats been the most memorable pop culture moment of your lifetime? Watching and falling in love with Queer as Folk. For me that was a big pop culture moment even though it was only somewhat mainstream. It was a great way to get a sense of gay culture before I immersed myself in it personally. On what do you insist? I insist on being around folks who live with a good moral compass, who are compassionate to those in need and carry themselves with a positive attitude. What was your last Facebook post or Tweet? It was probably something dealing with Commissary, the restaurant I manage. If your life were a book, what would the title be? Paint, Glitter, & Booze in the Big City: the story of William Dennis. Or something like that.

What LGBT stereotype annoys you most? That all amboyant men are non masculine or non athletic. Whats your favorite LGBT movie? Party Monster, Camp and Paris is Burning. Whats the most overrated social custom? I dont think I can pinpoint just one! What trophy or prize do you most covet? My college degree. I was the rst person in my family to attend and graduate college. What do you wish youd known at 18? About half of the things I know now! I wish I knew there was a community like the one I have when I was 18. Growing up in rural North Carolina, I didnt have that community or those friends. Why Washington? I traveled up here often when in college for conferences, meetings, etc. I got a post undergrad fellowship doing electoral organizing in Northern Virginia. After that I decided I didnt want to go back to North Carolina and I had started making a solid community of friends, so I decided to stay.

Group of friends tackle existential angst in Round House character study

By PATRICK FOLLIARD With This, playwright Melissa James Gibson briey tracks the not altogether graceful slide into middle age of a small group of longtime friends. And while the issues confronting them mortality, family and the seven year itch are heavily tread topics, the authors word play, obsessive parsing and quirky point of view make these subjects feel altogether fresh. Her characters can be ultra-glib, sometimes annoyingly so, but theyre also layered and relatable. The Obie Award-winning dramedy is currently playing at Bethesdas Round House Theatre in a terrically acted production deftly staged by the companys producing artistic director Ryan Rilette. It begins in the New York apartment of unhappily married Tom (Todd Scoeld) and Marrell (Felicia Curry). Their newborn doesnt sleep much and their nerves are jangly. On hand for a small gathering are Marrells close college friends Jane (Lisa Bruneau), a poet whose husband died exactly a year ago, and Alan (Michael Glenn), a self-deprecating gay mnemonicist (remembers every conversation hes ever heard verbatim) whos rarely without a drink or comment. And joining the foursome for the rst time is Frenchman Jean-Pierre (out actor Will Gartshore), a handsome physician with Doctors Without Borders. Hes there as a possible love match for Jane, but its Marrell who seems to be falling for his Gallic charms. The hosts bicker about baby, words and the Brita water lter, but theyre hell bent on having a good time, especially Marrell. Determined to pull Jane out of mourning, she forces her reluctant pal to play a party game. It falls at. The evening is a dud. Soon after, Marrells woodworker husband Tom pays a visit to Jane. He has feelings. Things happen that really

shouldnt, and most of the remainder of the play is about Jane resolving her guilt. The rather vague demonstrative pronoun title refers to both Jane and Toms regrettable deed and other more existential and typically unmentioned problems. James Kronzers ingenious revolving set is a dizzying puzzle of gray blocks that moves to create living rooms, a TV studio (where Tom broadcasts his memory trick to the masses), and a nightclub. As jazz singer/songwriter Marrell, Curry gets to show off a gorgeous, sultry voice with two torchy songs composed by Peter Eldridge. The cast is top notch. Bruneaus Jane is a wonderfully multifaceted portrayal of a real woman whos been dealt a relatively rough hand. Held up as the sainted widow by her friends, she proves her humanness at every turn both unintentionally and on purpose. And Gartshore is a delight as the worldly Frenchman who serves as a voice of reason among the comparably self-involved Americans. Jean-Pierres good looks and seless vocation are an inspiration, prompting Alan to rethink his life maybe he should aspire to do more than regurgitate chitchat? And fortunately for the production, Glenn is playing Alan the familiarly drawn gay boozy sidekick whose cutting rejoinders couldnt be more predictable. Glenn brings funny to a lot of spots where there isnt much. At about 90 minutes without intermission, This moves at a quick pace. The end is touching though unexpected. Speaking with heartfelt sincerity to her young unseen daughter, Jane emerges as a protagonist in what has seemed more an ensemble work. It leaves you wondering what happened to the other folks. But perhaps thats best. Like life, Gibsons play leaves room for some more of this and a lot more of that.

By KEVIN MAJOROS Theres a chill in the air and the Ski Bums celebrated it last week with their Avalanche Party at Nellies Sports Bar. The group is hosting 20 events during its 2014 season including trips to Lake Tahoe, Snowbird, Steamboat, Lake Placid and Chamonix, France. The Washington D.C. Ski Bums chapter is hosting its rst overnight trip to Snowshoe, W.Va., Jan. 24-26 with ski-in ski-out accommodations and a coordinated carpool from D.C. for all participants. Registration is now open at ski-bums.org. The D.C. Sentinels basketball team sent two teams to the Ballin on the Bayou tournament in New Orleans on Oct. 11-13. The Sentinels A Team was victorious in the Open Championship game defeating the San Francisco Rockdogs in a hard fought battle. The Sentinels B Team was defeated in the Competitive Division second round nal. The ballers can be found at teamdcbasketball.org. The D.C. Gay Flag Football League sent two travel teams to Gay Bowl XIII in Phoenix Oct. 11-13. The Washington Generals lost in the Championship Game in a slugfest with the San Diego Bolts by a score of 2726. The District of Columbia Aquatics Club and the Washington Wetskins water polo team hosted the Columbus Day Classic on Oct. 12-13. The swim meet was contested at the Wilson Aquatics Center and featured 150 swimmers from the eastern seaboard. As host club, its members removed themselves from the team competition and New York Aquatics captured the large team trophy. The small team trophy was won by Team SwimSpray. The swimmers are online at swimdcac.org. The water polo tournament was held at Tacoma Aquatics Center and included a strong lineup of 12 teams from the Mid-Atlantic States. Bring beverages, lunch, sunscreen, bug spray, sturdy boots and trip/driver fees of $22. Citys largest home has 12 bedrooms; smallest is just 252 square feet
By VALERIE M. BLAKE As those of us who live and work here know, Washington, D.C. is an amalgam of old and new. If you dont believe me, just watch the glass-studded, urban community known as CityCenterDC rise amid buildings such as the National Portrait Gallery, constructed between 1836 and 1868, and the Carnegie Library at Mount Vernon Square, dating from 1903. nantly Federal architecture, tall windows, high ceilings, heart pine oors, turned bannisters, pocket doors and intricate plaster moldings, these handsome relics and their younger sisters from the early 20th century capture the hearts of preservationists, history buffs and lovers of all things ornate. es and expanses of dark wood, stainless steel and brick veneer. But no matter what anyone tells you, size does matter, and in D.C. homes come in all of them. Whether old or new, the studio condo or coop, the Colonial we drew in school in our youth and the exquisite mansions built in and around Rock Creek Park all attract buyers. Renovating it was a fun project and allowed me to test architect Louis Sullivans principle that form ever follows function, but in reverse. A square box in form, its post-renovation functional elements included living/sleeping room, a dining area, a fully equipped kitchen and laundry, an ofce nook with built-in desk, a bathroom with shower and a clothes closet. But I was wrong about it being the smallest house in D.C. that honor, according to the tax records in the MRIS, goes to yet another Capitol Hill rowhouse that measures a scant 252 square feet. I still have nightmares of hundreds of clowns pouring out of it during a block party. Although housing choices continue to evolve, one thing remains constant: when buying a home in D.C., the best of all possible worlds envisioned by Voltaires Candide can quickly turn into H. G. Wells War of the Worlds otherwise known as multiple offers.
The New World Order

I routinely tell my clients that if everyone liked the same thing, Id be out of business. For all the people who favor the charm of an antique home, there are probably just as many looking for something new, be it a sleek renovation behind an historic faade or a condo built within the past ve years. According to the MRIS tax records, the award for the highest number of new homes built in 2013 goes to EYA with a total of 14 in Brooklands Chancellors Row. Functional oor plans, upscale nishes and the ability to customize the interiors make their product a popular choice for buyers who favor new construction. The ever-growing D.C. condo market seems to have lled the need for faux lofts, characterized by exposed ductwork and concrete pillars. The condos being built today tend toward simple, contemporary lines with open plans, walls of glass, uncluttered spac-
The Big Picture

According to the MRIS, the largest private home in D.C. has nearly 22,000 square feet on three levels, 12 bedrooms, 14 full baths, six half baths and sits on more than 10 acres. To quote Temperance Brennan, Yowsa! If youre like me, the purchase of such a home would require a group of at least three of my gainfully employed friends just to pay the light bill. The mortgage? For that I would need Danny Ocean, his cohorts and a fail-safe plan.
Old World Charm

According to the Metropolitan Regional Information System (MRIS), there are 28 residential homes in D.C. built in the 18th century, with the earliest date being 1754. If you add to that all the homes built in the 1800s, then that number jumps above 3,000. Factor in the late Victorian era when new construction blossomed and you have thousands more that are considered antique. As you might expect, 19 of the oldest homes are located in Georgetown, with four more in Capitol Hill and the remaining ve in various parts of the northwest quadrant. With predomi-

D.C. Council recognizes iconic music venue for nightlife contribution

Since the music and entertainment venue opened in 1980 on what were then desolate nighttime streets of a downtrodden downtown, the national and international awards garnered have been numerous. Originally located on F Street, N.W., at the street number 930 of its name and opening time, the legendary nightspot has long been among the most celebrated contributors to D.C. nightlife. Being beloved by local area residents and appreciated by successive generations of music fans for more than three decades has been the greatest achievement of the business. It is perennially the most popular and best-attended venue of its size in the world since moving to its current location at 815 V St., N.W., in 1996. On Oct. 1, the local landmark added another distinction to an extraordinary legacy. At the initiation of Council member David Catania, the D.C. Council presented the nightclub with a ceremonial resolution recognizing the 9:30 Club for being an iconic venue for live musical and other entertainment and to honor the 9:30 Club for its designation as the Best Big-Room Venue in America by Rolling Stone Magazine, Top Club by Billboard Touring Awards and Nightclub of the Year by Pollstar Magazine. Launched by Dody DiSanto and Jon Bowers at the Atlantic Building, the venue was acquired by Seth Hurwitz and Rich Heinecke in 1986. Hurwitz had handled bookings at the venue for several years following DJ stints at the eras alternative music radio stations WHFS and WGTB, and booking bands at the former Ontario Theatre in Adams Morgan. The business partners met when Heinecke was substitute teaching at Herbert Hoover Middle School in Potomac, Md., where Hurwitz was a student. They shared an interest in music and struck up a friend-

Productions, have operated Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md., since 2004, and produce numerous concerts at venues throughout the Washington and Baltimore areas.
