Do you think the steps below of the scientific method must be followed in order? Yes, because You cant complete the scientific method, if you do it out of order. 1. State the problem (the objective in the form of a question). 2. Gather information. 3. Form a hypothesis. 4. Experiment! 5. Record and analyze data. 6. Form a conclusion. 7. Communicate results.

Now that you are done researching and identifying your mineral fill-in the information for each step of the scientific method below. Then, number which step was first, second, etc. Objective: Use the steps of the scientific method to identify a mystery mineral. Materials: -Mineral -Streak Plate -The hardness test -Streak test 1. Mr. Finan gave me a mineral 2. I downloaded the Mineral Graph 3. I did the hardness test 4. Then the streak test -Microsoft Word -Minerals.net -Mr. Finans Blog 5. Went to Ebay and found out the price of my mineral 6. Looked up the special properties of my mineral 7. Filled out my science graph 8. Shared with the rest of the class

Procedure:

1. State the problem. (Hint: Just write the objective above in the form of a question.) How can I use the scientific method to? 2. Gather information. (Look it up and/or ask an expert) *see the attached Mineral Identification Data Sheet 3. Form a hypothesis. Write a statement that tells what mineral you think yours is (your two guesses). I think my mineral is either Augite or Aurachalite. I believe its Augite because it has the same luster, color, and special properties. My second guess is Aurachalite because my hint from Mr. Finan was my mineral name started with au, and there are only two minerals that start with au.

4. Start the experiment! (Follow the procedure.) 5. Record and analyze data. *see the attached Mineral Identification Data Sheet 6. Form a conclusion. This must be a paragraph that includes:
An answer to the problem (question 1). How your hypothesis compares with the actual results. (Was your hypothesis correct? If not, how close were you?) A description of your mineral and what helped you find the identification of your mineral the most.

Type your paragraph here I used the scientific method to identify a mystery mineral. The steps that I used are I made my hypothesis to what my mineral might be, and I identified the special properties, streak, color, luster, and hardness. I also used Mr. Finan's letter hints. My hypothesis was that my mineral was Mica. It turned out to be that my mineral was Augite. My hypothesis was very close. Augite and Mica share many of the same qualities. The mineral I was assigned was a blackish-gold color, with a black streak, submetallic luster, and I had hardness 9, and no special properties. I found what my mineral was because I used luster, color, and hardness, but Mr. Finan's letter hint definitely helped me the most. In conclusion, I discovered that my mineral was Augite.
