Trommel Calculation Nov 22 nd, 2007, 7:14am

I am trying to calculate the dimensions of a trommel (rotating screen) for separating friable materials however the Taggart formula I have found only calculates the diameter of the trommel not the length. The calculation also does not take into account particle to aperture ratio, screen open area, efficiencies etc. like a normal screen calculation. Can anyone help me with a calculation to determine the overall dimensions of a trommel, not just the diameter. Thanks.

Trommel can be cosidered as a slow mov screen (vibrations replaced by cascading material. Diameter can be considered as width of screen. Way back in 1966, We had a wet trommel for screening iron ore at 250 TPH. The diameter was 6 feet and the length 16 ft.

Hi Mike 1 - are you wet or dry screening? the screen formulii change for dry ,wet or slurry 2 - do the calcs for a normal 20 deg screen to get area required. You said you have Taggart's calcs for diameter. so now you can get the lenght. NOTE - A trommel total screen area is effectively only 10% used in service, so it will be bigger ie Calcs say 40 sqft required for normal screen ~ 400 sqft for trommel. If dia = 8' then lenght = 400 / 8 x 3.14 = 15.92' say 16 ft other tricks 1 - make diameter match either modular panel size or available screen cloth sizes ( easy to get ) 2 - make lenght so to suit the available cloths
